BackgroundEuropean Union Police Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established on 01 January 2003and refocused as of 01 January 2005 to focus on supporting the fight against organized crime,enhance police accountability and support the police reform process and was extended until 31December 2009. On 15 April 2008, 24 Member States participated in EUPM (currently noparticipation by Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg). The following third states contribute to themission: Canada, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.Police Commissioner Stefan Feller from Germany is the Head of Mission since 01 November2008 and will end his tour of duty on 31 December 2009; Deputy Head of Mission is ColonelDomenico Paterna from Italy.At the 12 th Medal Awarding Ceremony 38 International Police Officers and Civilian Expertsfrom Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the SlovakRepublic, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom will be receive the European Securityand Defence Service Medal and two national staff members will receive the EUPM certificate ofappreciation.At the occasion of the 12 th Ceremony six out of 25 members of the EUPM Planning Team of2002 will also receive the ESDP Service Medal for their service during the planning mission.7 | P a g e
