2013-2014annual reportAddison-Penzak JCCof Silicon ValleyLevy Family Campus

Report from the Chair and CEOIt’s been another wonderful year at the JCC.One of our proudest achievements this year was openingour new Club J youth lounge in October 2013, through thegenerosity of JCC supporter Ronald Cohn. Club J quicklybecame popular with the elementary school set, with a dancefloor, electronic games wall, rock climbing wall, air hockey, arts and crafts area, library and much more. Services includedrop-in childcare for JCC members, an after-school programserving 30 children in partnership with Yavneh Day School, and birthday parties. Before Club J opened, the JCC onlyhad one childcare room serving children ages 6 weeks oldall the way up through 12 years, so this fantastic new facilityhas provided a new, “cooler” alternative for the elementaryschool age children.Avery KaufmanBorenstein,Chair of the BoardNate Stein,CEOIn November 2013 we held a gala celebration in memory ofour founding donor, Arnie Addison, who passed away earlier in the year, may his memory be a blessing. Thegala’s theme was “Driving Our Dreams” in tribute to Arnie’s passion for classic cars. At the gala, the Addisonfamily announced the formation of the Cookie and Arnie Addison Scholarship Fund, which makes it possiblefor those in need to attend specific JCC programs such as non-fitness classes, lectures and events. Togetherwith the JCC’s already-existing scholarship programs for membership, preschool and camp, this newscholarship fund provides income-based assistance for those who could not otherwise participate. In fall 2013, we acquired Hatikvah House, generously donated to the JCC by Len Shustek and DonnaDubinsky. Hatikvah house is a Jewish-themed live-in facility for developmentally disabled adults located inCampbell, California. The JCC’s mission is to serve the community, and the acquisition of Hatikvah Housefits into that mission.A new program that has taken off very successfully this year is Theatre Chevruta, the JCC’s ReadersTheatre. Theatre Chevruta presents staged readings of new and old classics of Jewish theatre. It openedthe season with a reading of Tevya and His Daughters in fall 2013, followed by a reading of God of Vengeancein spring 2014.We also continued many of our popular events from past years, which are open to the entire Silicon Valleycommunity on a free or low-cost basis. These included the summer Float Night Pool Parties, the winterHanukah festival – which this year was called Hanukah on Ice and involved an indoor ice rink in the APJCCAuditorium, the Jewbilee day of learning in January, the South Bay Teen Idol competition in late winter andearly spring, the Wellness Fair in May, and the Silicon Valley Jewish Music Festival in June. The JCC’s Camp Committee, chaired by Carrie McCarthy, developed a new strategic plan for summer campwhich we began implementing in summer 2014. As part of the plan, we brought back our old camp name,Camp Shalom, and added an increased emphasis on Jewish programming, more swimming, and a numberof other exciting changes.Toward the end of the fiscal year, the APJCC Board of Directors voted to adopt the new logo and brandguidelines recently developed by the national JCC Association. You will see a new look on JCC publicationsgoing forward, including the new logo on this Annual Report. We were proud to be voted Best Health Club in the Metro Newspaper’s reader poll again this year. TheAPJCC has won first place in this category for 7 of the past 9 years. In May 2014, the APJCC celebrated its 40th anniversary. We celebrated with an APJCC history exhibit inthe main lobby and a variety of special Member Appreciation events. We appreciate all the members andsupporters who make this JCC possible, and we are looking forward to the next 40 years!B’Shalom,AveryAvery Kaufman Borenstein, Chair of the BoardNateNate Stein, Chief Executive Officer
