STANDING OPERATING PROCEDURESToe of Dam. The junction of the downstream face of a dam with the ground surface, referred toas the downstream toe. For an embankment dam the junction of upstream face with groundsurface is called the upstream toe.Top of Dam. The elevation of the uppermost surface of a dam, usually a road or walkway,excluding any parapet wall, railings, etc.Trashrack. A screen located at an intake to prevent the ingress of debris.Unusual Event. An event which takes place, or a condition which develops, that is not normallyencountered in the routine operation of the dam and reservoir, or necessitates a variation from theoperating procedures.Uplift. The upward pressure in the pores of a material (interstitial pressure) or on the base of astructure.Valve. A device fitted to a pipeline or orifice in which the closure member is either rotated ormoved transversely or longitudinally in the waterway so as to control or stop the flow.A-8Revision No. 0October 2008
