STANDING OPERATING PROCEDURESthe mechanism of piping involved, the zoning of the dam, the size of the reservoir andweather the reservoir can be drawn down rapidly, and the resources available to carry outintervention measures. If a piping or uncontrolled embankment seep is identified early, successful interventioncan be accomplished by lowering the reservoir. If lowering the reservoir cannot beaccomplished quickly, additional intervention can include constructing a filtered drainageberm over the seepage area provided it is accessible and working conditions are safe. Afiltered drainage berm is constructed by placing a layer of filter material over the seepageexit and overlaying that with pervious drainage material. A geotextile can be substitutedas the filter material. These emergency measures to temporarily control piping aredepicted in Figure 6-19. An example of a filter diaphragm at the downstream end of anoutlet conduit constructed using commonly available quarry and concrete plant aggregatematerials is illustrated in Figure 6-20.6-19Revision No. 0October 2008
