thanksgiving service 2004Dreamfulfilled2004 Thanksgiving ServiceSolemn tribute to donorsThose who donatedtheir bodies formedical researchhave been honouredby the <strong>University</strong>.The <strong>University</strong> acknowledged one<strong>of</strong> the largest groups <strong>of</strong> anatomydonors ever at a special communityevent last month.The annual Thanksgiving Serviceon May 6 at the UQ Centre expressedappreciation for the generosity <strong>of</strong> 72donors who died in 2002.UQ receives approximately 60donors’ bodies each year from thegreater Brisbane area.This year’s multifaith service wasled for the first time by a femalechaplain, Theresa Stolz <strong>of</strong> theLutheran Church.Chair <strong>of</strong> UQ’s ThanksgivingService Committee Leo Brown saiddonations were crucial to the success<strong>of</strong> educational programs for students.“These gifts make a significantcontribution in allowing students tolearn about the complexities <strong>and</strong> theinfinite variability <strong>of</strong> the humanbody,” he said.While most bodies are used forteaching normal anatomy, some areused specifically for medical research.Mr Brown said the inauguralThanksgiving Service in 1992, whichrecognised all donations to the<strong>University</strong> since 1927, was the first<strong>of</strong> its kind in Australia <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> thefirst in the world.“The service is well supported bystudents, staff, donors’ families <strong>and</strong>friends <strong>and</strong> members <strong>of</strong> thecommunity,” Mr Brown said.“The students look forward to theevent as it gives them the opportunityto meet families <strong>and</strong> express theirgratitude.”A key symbol <strong>of</strong> the service wasthe Book <strong>of</strong> Remembrance that recordsthe names <strong>of</strong> all donors since 1990.The Alumni Association hasdonated more than $3000 to purchasea second book in which the names <strong>of</strong>deceased donors from 1927 to 1989 arebeing inscribed by Honorary AssociatePr<strong>of</strong>essor Lesley Williams, AM.People wishing to bequeath theirbodies can contact Mr Brown on 073365 2515 or anatsci@uq.edu.auInternational student YunShen fulfilled her dream <strong>of</strong>studying at UQ when she wasadmitted into the Master <strong>of</strong>Commerce program in theFaculty <strong>of</strong> BusinessEconomics <strong>and</strong> Law.Sadly, Ms Shen died on March12 after being involved in a roadaccident.Ms Shen came from Wuhanin the People’s Republic <strong>of</strong>China.She was the <strong>only</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong>XianShou Shen <strong>and</strong> Ying Fan.Director <strong>of</strong> UQ’s StudentSupport Services Dr MaureenBurke said a memorial servicewas held at the <strong>University</strong> whereMs Shen’s parents, friends <strong>and</strong><strong>University</strong> staff shared in a tributeto her young life.Bin briefReunion postponedThe proposed reunion for theclass <strong>of</strong> 1978 that featured inthe 533 edition <strong>of</strong> UQ News isbeing rescheduled to enablemore graduates to attend.For details <strong>and</strong> updates, visit thealumni website atwww.alumni.uq.edu.auFrench FEASTUQ is one <strong>of</strong> 10 Australianuniversities participating in aninternational initiative allowingPhD students to study at bothan Australian <strong>and</strong> a Frenchuniversity.Known as ‘cotutelle’, thisform <strong>of</strong> study was the subject<strong>of</strong> a Forum for European-Australian Science <strong>and</strong>Technology Cooperation(FEAST) seminar held at the<strong>University</strong> earlier this month.Dean <strong>of</strong> PostgraduateStudents Pr<strong>of</strong>essor AlanLawson said the Joint/doublebadgeddoctoral degree: theFrench-Australian PhD in‘cotutelle’ seminar highlightedthe program’s benefits <strong>and</strong>looked at future developments.UQ NEWS, june 2004Medical student Marty Lowe5
