How to Plant AzaleasDig hole twice as big as root ball and asdeep as the root ball.If azalea has roots that are circling aroundthe outside of the root ball, make numerousvertical cuts with a sharp knife to encouragenew, outward root growth.Place the azalea in the hole and fill aroundthe azalea half way with well-conditionedsoil. EZ Hint: Good soil is essential for yourazaleas to grow properly. Most soil in thesoutheast has a lot of clay in it which doesn’tdrain well. To fix this problem, amend yoursoil with Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Trees& Shrubs or peat moss. Using a gardensoil helps condition the soil for improvedaeration and moisture retention, plus itcontains Miracle-Gro Plant Food to get theazalea off to a great start.Next water the soil to eliminate air pockets,fill the remainder of the hole completelywith your amended soil, water again,and build a small mound of soil aroundthe azalea. Make sure the top of the rootball is level or slightly above ground levelbefore mounding the soil.How to Care for AzaleasWatering:• Water thoroughly to a depth of 8” to 12”. Don’t let the azalea wilt. Soakerhoses are good for deep watering of large azalea beds as they decreaseevaporation and outbreak of diseases. Evening and early morning are thebest times to water as less water is lost to evaporation than midday watering.Pruning:• Flowering: prune immediately after they bloom (Spring bloom for EncoreAzaleas). This will maintain shape and induce heavy blooming. Also allowsbud development for the next year.Mulching:• Mulching not only enhances the beauty of your garden but alsoprovides numerous benefits to the soil and the plants growing in it.• Mulch reduces erosion, conserves moisture, reduces/inhibits weed growth,and insulates the soil (keeps it cooler in summer and warmer in winter).• Apply 2-4” of mulch.Fertilizing:• Azaleas grow best in acidic soil (4.5 to 6.0 pH). To increase soil acidityuse sulfur.
