Director’s CornerThis is a re-print provided by the Purdue Extension.Ten Things to Prepare for Winter StormsFema & Purdue University’s Extension DisasterEducation Network are encouraging everyone totake preventive measures to ensure their safety andreduce the risk of winter storm damage with thefollowing tips:1. Assemble a disaster supply kit. Store drinkingwater, canned/no-cook food, non-electric canopener, first aid kit, battery-powered radio, flashlightand extra batteries where you can get them easily. Also include winter specific items such as rock salt, sand and other snow removal equipment.2. Prepare for the possibility you will need to stay inyour home for several days after a winter storm.Make sure that you have sufficient heating fuel aswell as emergency heating equipment.3. House fires pose an additional risk as morepeople turn to alternate heating sources. Keep fireextinguishers on hand and make sure eveyrone inyour house knows how to use them.4. Know ahead of time what you should do to helpthe elderly or disabled friends and neighbors.5. Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid a build-up of toxic fumes and alwaysrefuel outside. Keep all heaters at least 3 ft fromflammable objects.6. Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer ofheavy clothing. Outer garments should be tightlywove and water-repellent. Wear a hat, mittens andsturdy, waterproof boots. Cover your mouth with ascarf to protect your lungs from extremely cold air.7. Keep cars and other vehicles fueled and in goodrepair. Winterize your car by checking your carbattery, ignition system, thermostat, lights, flashers, exhaust, heater, brakes, defroster and tires. Ensurethat your car has adequate antifreeze, windshieldwasher fluid and oil and check regularly throughoutthe season.8. If traveling by car during a winter weather advisory or winter storm watch, do so in daylight, do nottravel alone, keep others informed of your scheduleand route, and stay on main roads. Avoid drivingduring a sinter storm warning or blizzard warning.9. Winterize your house, barn, shed or any otherstructure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, livestock or equipment. Clear raingutters, repair roof leaks and cut away treebranches that could fall on your house or otherstructure during a storm. (continued ~Cooking for One (or Two)AT THE MC SENIOR CENTERMon.
