8 Disused Whaling Stations, Leith Harbour - Gazetteer, July 20112 The Blubber CookeryTo the south of the platform is the blubber cookerycontaining, two rows of six cookers. The main elevatorshaft comes from a hopper in the west end feeding up toa distribution point on a metal frame clad in corrugatediron. The platform at cooker top level has more orless collapsed. The building has been enclosed incorrugated iron at the south end and up to the blubberplatform level but the north wall has collapsed on to theFlensing Platform. The roof on the south side has alsocollapsed pushing out the timber and corrugated ironwall which is now likely to collapse shortly.The iron staircase leading up to the platform above theblubber cookers is also collapsing.At the east end of the blubber plant, really a separatebuilding, is the separator plant. A steel framed buildingwith steel trusses, with cookers to the west andseparator plant to the east. The building is open upto the roof with steel trusses supporting timber purlinsand corrugated sheeting. The sheeting of the west endis missing where it is adjacent to the blubber cookery.Some big steel windows, now damaged, on the northside and some sheets of corrugated iron claddingmissing here.
