David is a specialist in Book and Paper Conservation, which heteaches alongside his research subject, materials science, both at <strong>West</strong> <strong>Dean</strong>and other institutions. He is an accredited member of ICON and a Fellow of IIC.ASSISTANT TUTOR ELIZABETH NEVILLETHE FACILITIESStudents on the Book and Library Materials programme have their personalworkbench situated in the Bindery. In addition the department has areas forpaper conservation, washing, science, finishing, sharpening and securestorage; and there is a range of conservation and bookbinding equipment.Basic tools are provided at the beginning of the course, but students areencouraged and given advice towards building up their personal set of tools.A separate laboratory is available as a <strong>College</strong>-wide resource, containinganalytical and microscopy equipment. It was obtained by thepresent owner, the Solent Sunbeam Class,together with the yacht. The log was writtenin a standard stationery binding inburgundy leather, with approximately 300pages. Retaining its original character was aconservation priority, and surface cleaningwas carried out accordingly. A new textilebacking was created to support the originaldegraded leather and provide strength andflexibility. It can now be read again withoutincurring further damage. It was returnedto the owner in a bespoke hand-made box.14
