Figures 4 and 5 show the most common ECLA and IPC subclasses for total patent families.At this level of hierarchy ECLA and IPC subclasses are identical; however both of theseclassifications are indexed in the Minesoft Patbase database and Espacenet. It is interestingto note the different number of documents classified for each ECLA and IPC subclass. Allpatent documents have to be classified according to the IPC by the publishing patent officewhile ECLA codes are alloted to documents by the examiners of the European <strong>Patent</strong> Office(EPO) upon the search of an EPO application or the incorporation of non-EPO publicationsin the EPO patent database. An ECLA classification may therefore not be available for agiven document or it may be different from the IPC classification alloted by the publishingpatent office. The statistical analysis tools in Patbase were used to count these major classificationsby importing the database into Patbase.IPC stands for the International <strong>Patent</strong> Classification and is administered by the World IntellectualProperty Organization (WIPO). The scheme was conceived as an indexing systemto organize patent documents from around the world based on the technical field of the invention,thereby providing a retrieval system by subject matter, independent of keywordsearching. ECLA stands for European Classification, and was designed in-house by theEuropean <strong>Patent</strong> Office as an enhancement to the IPC classification system. The IPC andECLA classifications are useful and provide added value because they are assigned byhighly skilled personnel. As the body of patent literature expands, the number of documentsclassified in IPC groups naturally grows. Because a group that still contains thousands ofdocuments hinders the ultimate purpose of a classification scheme, ECLA groups are definedto split these large IPC groups into even smaller divisions, and therefore have narrowergroup definitions. Documents present in the G section (Physics) are representative of documentsdescribing methods of testing, analyzing, and quantifying Ritonavir pharmacological activityand HIV/AIDS patients receiving Ritonavir.
