The term includes confined gaseous,liquid and solid propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics, chemical and riot-control agents, smokes andincendiaries (including bulk explosives), chemical warfare agents, chemical munitions, rockets, guidedand ballistic missiles, bombs, warheads, mortar rounds, artillery ammunition, small arms ammunition,grenades, mines, torpedoes, depth charges, cluster munitions and dispensers, demolition charges, anddevices and components of the above. CEA can also include NATO or U.S. manufactured munitionsthat may not have been under U.S. custody or control.combat systemA combat system is the “system of systems” that results from the synergistic combination of five basicsubsystems that are interrelated to achieve a military function: combat forces, combat support forces,logistics forces, C2, and RISTA.complex terrainThis is a topographical area consisting of an urban center larger than a village and/or of two or moretypes of restrictive terrain or environmental conditions occupying the same space. (Restrictive terrainor environmental conditions include but are not limited to slope, high altitude, forestation, severeweather, and urbanization.) Complex terrain, due to its unique combination of restrictive terrain andenvironmental conditions, imposes significant limitations on observation, maneuver, fires, andintelligence collection.defeat(Army) A tactical mission task that occurs when an enemy force has temporarily or permanently lostthe physical means or the will to fight. The defeated force’s commander is unwilling or unable topursue his adopted course of action, thereby yielding to the friendly commander’s will, and can nolonger interfere to a significant degree with the actions of friendly forces. Defeat can result from theuse of force or the threat of its use (FM 1-02).*explosive hazard(Army) An explosive hazard is any hazard containing an explosive component. All explosive hazardscurrently encountered on the battlefield can be broken down into five categories: UXO, booby traps,IEDs, CEA, and bulk explosives.explosive ordnance(DOD) All munitions containing explosives, nuclear fission or fusion materials, and biological andchemical agents.
