TXRF principlebeam in the sample matrix. Resultingbenefits include a significantly enhancedfluorescence yield, largely reduced backgroundnoise, and consequently muchhigher sensitivities to elements presenteven in trace amounts. How does samplepreparation work? For TXRF the sample must be appliedon a polished carrier made of quartz oracrylic glass. In the case of liquid samplesor suspensions, a few microlitres arepipetted directly on a carrier and dried.Powder samples like soils, metals, pigments or biological samples can beapplied directly for qualitative analysis.A few particles or micrograms are sufficient. For quantitative analysis, powdersmust be suspended in a detergent solutionand pipetted onto the sample carrier.Filters, wipes, biological tissues andsmears require extraction in an ultrasonicbath. For the measurements, the extractsolutions are applied on the sample carrierwithout any further treatment. How often is acalibration required? The S2 PICOFOX comes factorycalibratedand ready to use. Day-to-dayquantification of unknown samples thenonly requires the addition of an internalstandard element, such as gallium. Dueto the thin sample layer, the fluorescenceintensity of an element is directly proportionalto its concentration in the sample.Quantitative analysis is highly accurate atall concentrations from ppb to 100 percent, and requires no further calibrationby the user.
