Welcome by the PresidentDear Colleagues,On behalf of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) and of the SociétéNationale Française de Médecine Interne (SNFMI),it is an honour for me to invite youto participate to the 5 th meeting of EFIM which will be held in Paris from Wednesday31 August to Saturday 3 September 2005.This Congress will coincide with the tenth anniversary of the Federation, and myhope is that the Congress will represent an opportunity to consecrate the dynamismof the Federation as well as the scientific productivity of all European Internists.TheFederation is strong of the membership of 27 countries, representing more than30 000 Doctors.The programme of the Congress will cover the major aspects of various medicalproblems selected for their importance in the medical practice of EuropeanInternists.The priority of the Organising Committee is to provide the highest quality ofscientific information to the participants through a wide selection of topics, speakersand papers.You will find during the Congress a wide range of updates in the diagnosisand management of various diseases.The Organising Committee also aims to provide you with state of the art lectures andsessions dedicated to the most recent medical advances in clinical research andtherapeutics.The Congress will be held in the congress centre of an important complex dedicatedto Sciences and Education called La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, located in thenorthern part of Paris on a area called “La Villette”. Welcome by the French Societyof Internal MedicineDear Colleagues,The National French Society of Internal Medicine (SNFMI) has just celebrated its 25 thanniversary,and its 50 th congress.The SNFMI is particularly delighted to be welcomingthe European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) for its fifth congress.Holding biannual congresses is a sign of the dynamism of our Society, which countsmore than 1500 members:most of them are hospital doctors (coming either from our40 medical schools hospitals or from general hospitals), whereas exclusive privatepractice of Internal Medicine is more limited in France than in other countries.Activity of French Internists is in continuity and with relationship to General practice(Family Medicine), taking care of difficult medical problems that do not depend on aspecific organ speciality. The various ways of practising internal Medicine and themedical problems covered by French Internists are broad. Internists may act asconsultants or only take care of hospitalised patients, or both. The Internist isgenerally acknowledged to be a specialist of multisystemic diseases, polypathology,orphan diseases, or psychosomatic medicine...The regular incidence of meetings at the European level has already taken us fromMaastricht to Florence,Edinburgh,Berlin,and now Paris.These European meetings areopportunities to point out the increasing strength of the bonds that link EuropeanInternists despite the diversity of their practice.Our beloved Speciality is extremely productive and more and more necessary forsociety when medicine is splitting into microspecialties. Internal Medicine is basedon fascinating scientific and technical progresses.
