Chapter1IntroductionA few words for Apogee EssenceApogee Essence is the perfect tool for Web based data management. Basedon the rules of Content Management and GUI Web Publishing, you have anideal tool for easy retrievaland proper sorting ofinformation, in sections defined bythe user himself. It is a complete e-Content Management System,suitable for any kind of company ororganization. The system is designedto facilitate automated addition ofcontent on the one hand, whilepermitting easy search, tracing andprojection of data.Image 1.Homepage


Definition of TermsInsofar as the context of the present manual is concerned, the following terms have themeaning defined below:• Web Site: A number of Web pages that functions as a source of informationand/or as service point for a company, an organization etc.• (Web) Page: A page of the Web site as it is viewed by the visitor. Pages aresorted into categories.• Category: The basic assortment of all pages in a Web site. A category containspages and/or subcategories.• Main Categories: The basic categories in which the content of the site isprimarily divided.• Main Category: The first that appears upon entering in the home address ofthe Web site (e.g. http://apogee.gr)• Parent Category: The category to which a subcategory or page belongs.• Homepage: The page displaying the contents of a main category of the Website.• Screen: A page that appears as part of the content management system of theWeb site. In this manual screens are presented under the title: Screen.• Site map: A hierarchical presentation of the contents of the Web site.• Link: A text that functions as a direct link between the current and anotherpage or file. Links are presented in this manual under the title: Links.3


Chapter2Log inGetting Access to Apogee EssenceType the address http://apogee-solutions.net/essenceserver/ in the address barof your browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.); the home page ofthe system will appear where the user will be asked to fill in the access form:Image 2.Access Form• User name• Password andIf the data you inserted is correct after hitting Login or Enter from your keyboard, youwill be transferred to the Administration Homepage of Apogee Essence.4


Basic LinksWhen the user logs into the system, he can see the following links to all screens ofApogee Essence:Image 3.Apogee Administration• Apogee Essence – Administration : Restore the Administration Homepage.• Quick Navigation: View Site Map (presentation of the structure)By choosing a category/ subcategory the user is automatically transferred to it. If youwant to close the window, click on the close link.• Media Manager : Local files manager accessible to all users (more details atChapter 6)• Preview : Makes the preview of the pages of the site• Users manual (PDF): The user can download this manual in .pdf (AcrobatReader) format.5


Chapter3Administration HomepageThe starting point for the administration of the siteThe administration Homepage includes the following parts:HeadingThe user can see a greeting message or log out by clicking the link.List of Main CategoriesHere there is a display with links to all main categories of the pages that are availableon the site. By clicking on the name of a category the main page of the categoryappears on the screen (more details under View Category)The categories are:By clicking the Display Contents link, the user is transferred to the View Categoryscreen.6


Next to the name of each category, the following links are displayed:• Add Page: create a new page to the corresponding category.• Add Subcategory: create a subcategory to the corresponding category.• Edit category: change the properties of the category.• Delete Category: delete the category (you will be asked for a confirmation bythe system)• Add parent category: create a new main category.7


Chapter4Category AdministrationDisplays the contents of a category: add/ edit/ delete category.The user can see the contents of the category. He can, also, add subcategoriesand pages, as well as edit or delete them.View CategoryOn the View Category page appears the category chosen by the user.Image 5.Main links of CategoryThe name of the main category and the following links are displayed next to the iconof the folder , at the top of the screen:• Add page. The user is transferred to the screen Add Page.• Add Subcategory. The user is transferred to the screen Add Subcategory.• Edit Category. The user is transferred to the screen Edit Category.• Delete Category. The user is transferred to the screen Delete Category.• Show Category Pages. This particular link appears only when there are pagesunder this category.8


In case there is a home page of the category, the name of it appears next to thenotepad icon along with the following links:• Edit Page• Delete Page(More details in next chapter - Chapter 5.)The content of the home page is displayed in the main part of the screen.If there is not a homepage, then a list of the subcategories and pages of the categoryappears.Add SubcategoryBy clicking the link Add Subcategory, the screen for the creation of the newsubcategory will be displayed. The user must then enter data into three fields. Theseare:• Title: The user must type the name of the subcategory.• Parent Category: The new category will belong to the category that the userchooses from a drop down menu. If the user chooses the dash (–) the categorywill be defined as main. If the user chooses the name of a category that has adash on the left side, then the new category will belong to a subcategory. If theuser chooses a name of a category, then the new category will belong to thechosen category.• Show order: The user sets the order of the categories. The changes are moreobvious in the Quick Navigation.9


Image 6.Add SubcategoryBy hitting Submit, the data chosen by the user are saved on the server, while themessage Category X has been added and a link to the newly created category appear on thescreen.10


Edit CategoryBy selecting Edit Category you can modify the type of the category you have chosen.You can also change the title of the category as well as define whether the category willbe a parent one or will become a subcategory of another main. By selecting dash (-) inthe drop down menu the category will be a parent one. By choosing the name ofanother category, the modified category will become a subcategory. The changes takeeffect once you hit submit on the screen. Immediately afterwards you will be briefedon the changes you effected in the screen Modification Completion.Image 7.Edit CategoryDelete Category11


The user can also delete any category of theWeb site. To do so, choose Delete Categoryfrom the links next to its name. Before finaldeletion, the user will be asked to confirm hisoption by clicking Yes in the screen thatappears. After that a message of confirmationof the deletion will be displayed, while, bychoosing No he will return to the previousscreen.Image 8.Delete Category12


Chapter5Page ManagementDisplay Apages of a categorys indicated above, apart from categories, the user can also enter into thesystem individual pages. He can also edit or delete them. When the contentsof a category appear, the user can view a list of links to the existing pages byclicking Display pages of a Category (which means that there are morethan one page in the specific category). By clicking one of the links on the list, theuser can see the title of the page next to the Notepad sign as well as the contentsof the page. Moreover, the following options are available:By clicking on the link you can see the list with the already created pages. If theuser chooses a link then he can see the following data:• The name of the category the page belongs to next to the folder sign .• The name of the page next to the Notepad sign .• The content of the page.Moreover there are the following links:• Edit Page. The user is transferred to the Edit Page screen• Delete page. The selected page is deleted (after confirmation)13


Add a page to a categoryIf the user wants to add a page to one of the existing categories, then he must choosethe link Add a Page that has already been mentioned in Chapter 4 above. He willthen be transferred to the Add a Page screen, with the tools of which he can createthe new page. Moreover, certain fields have to be filled in. These are:• Title: The title of the page that appears in the page Category Display.• Parent Category: The new page will belong to the category that the user willchoose from a drop down menu. If the user chooses the dash (–) the page willbe defined as main. If the user chooses the name of a category that has a dashon the left side, then the new page will belong to a subcategory. If the userchooses a name of a category, then the new page will belong to the chosencategory.• Main page of category: The user chooses whether the current page will be themain page of the category or not.• Date: By clicking on the calendar sign the user can set the date that will appearas the date the page was added. The date is displayed in the list of the links tothe pages of each category.• Text: The text of the page can be in any style, language or layout is set by theuser.• Relative image: By clicking on the folder sign at the end of the page theuser can enter a picture from those available on the server via the FilesManagement section of the screen. This picture is displayed whenever we chooseto view the page it is adhered to and also is displayed in small view in theCategory Display.• Summary: A text with basic information about the page that appears in theDisplay a Category screen.By pressing submit the content and the data entered by the user are saved on theserver. Immediately afterwards the user receives the message Page added and also a linkto the newly created page.14

Edit PageBy selecting Edit Page the user canmake any change he wants in relation tothe particular page. The screen thatappears is the same as the one underthe title Add a Page For the changes totake effect the user must hit Submit andthen he will be transferred to a pagesummarizing all the newly enteredchanges under the title ModificationCompletion.Image 14.Successful additionDelete PageThe user also delete any page he wantsfrom the ones currently one the Web site.To do so, he must choose Delete Page,from the list of links next to its name.Before final deletion, the user has toverify his choice by hitting either Yes orNo in the confirmation screen.Image 15.Confirmation page21


Chapter6Files ManagementEdit and add files on the web serverBy clicking on the link Media Manager the Files Management screen appearsenabling you to enter, edit or delete files from the local server of the Web site.Once you click on one of the available files you can have it displayed. You canalso view already existing directories that you can view in the scrolling listDirectory and furthermore, create a new folder and view folder contents either in a listor in thumbnails .The user can create new folders in order to organize his files. By clicking the iconopens the following window:Once he inserts a name and hits the OK button, the new folder is created with thecorresponding name.22


Image 16.Media managerAdd FilesIf the user wants to insert a picture apart from the already available ones he must firstclick Browse. In this way, he can explore the folders on his Personal Computer (PC)and select the picture he wants to upload on the server. By clicking Upload he canadd/upload the picture he has chosen.View FilesIf the user wants to view a file, he can do so by clicking on the preview signthe picture appears in a new window.Then23


Edit FilesBy clicking on the edit files sign , the window under the title Edit Files pops uppermitting the user to edit the picture he wants by means of the available tools. Theseare:• Resize: Change the image size.• Rotate: Rotate the image.• Measure: Measure specific width and height of the image.• Marker: View or hide the image border.• Save: Save changes.24


Image 17.Edit pictureFor example, if the user wants to change the size of the image, he has to select theproper tool, put the pointer of the mouse on the border of the image and drug. He cando the same thing by typing the Width and Height at the respective fields. In order theimage not to lose its aspect ratio, there is the Constrain Proportions choice. Finally hehas to click the Save button so as to save changes with the name, type and quality hewants.Delete FilesThe user must click on the delete tool sign just under the picture he wants to havedeleted. In the dialog box that appears, the user must either verify or cancel is choiceby clicking on the respective option.25


Chapter7ModulesAvailable extensions to the systemThe way Apogee Essence is built up permits the user to easily add new featuresand extensions for the Web site. Some modules that have already beendeveloped and you can see at our demo are:NewsSite MapThis module displays the structure of the Web site.SearchThe user can search through pages or categories of the site for specific content and/orinformation.ContactThere is the possibility to have visitor of the web site getting in contact with theadministrators via e-mail. The fields of the contact form are customizable.ForumLogged in members of the site can have a conversation through this module.26
