We are beginning to seethe results of having Dean Jon Mills and UF President Charles Young so committed tomaking the quality of our facilities equal to the quality of our students, faculty and alumni.Their stated goal of moving UFLaw into the ranks of the Top 10 public law schools is trulyachievable if we all join in that commitment. In 2003, thanks to our Building Committee chaired by W.C. Gentry and the hundredsof you that contributed, we will begin construction on an expanded Library and newstate-of-the-art classrooms. While we have accomplished much, our challenge now will beto equip these new and upgraded facilities with futuristic technology needed for the highestquality research and communications. The Law Center Board of Trustees will be working tirelessly to accomplish these goals, and we need to know we can count on your continued support and contributions.Opportunities still exist for your help in making the Lawton Chiles Legal InformationCenter, the renovated Holland Hall and the O’Connell Supreme Court Reading Roomcompetitive with comparable law school facilities across the country.Although we are disappointed Dean Mills will be stepping down in 2003, I can assure youthorough and detailed work has gone into finding his successor. I had the privilege ofserving on the law school’s Dean Search Committee, co-chaired by Professors ChristopherSlobogin and Barbara Woodhouse. My experience working with them, other educators onthe committee, and the faculty as a whole has been most rewarding. President Young andProvost David Colburn also have been very involved in this process. I am honored to haverepresented you on such a great committee, and value the working relationship our Boardhas with the staff, faculty and administration.Exciting and dynamic changes are ahead for us in 2003-04 and beyond, and with your loyalGator Law support, we can all look forward to seeing them unfold. Why Do We Need It?UFLaw IN COMPETITION with Top 10Annual FundParticipation, ContributionsALevin College of Law education– to be meaningful to students –is as much about varied, effective co-curricular, extracurricularprograms and organizations asit is about superb faculty andrequired courses. And when it comes to enrichmentbeyond the classroom, the Annual Fund isthe lifeblood of those co-curricular and extracurricularactivities needed to help UFLawand its students compete with their peers atlaw schools throughout the country. When it comes to Annual Fund success, the College of Law is not keeping pace withTop 10 competitors – or even with some lawschools in Florida and the Southeast. While large portions of the school’sannual budget come from State allocation, tuition and interest from its Endowment(capped annually at about 4.5-5 percent ofaccumulated interest), many programs andactivities benefitting students the most aren’tcovered by these monies. For example:Moot Court and Trial TeamsAnnual Fund contributions help pay fortraining, travel expenses and materials forUFLaw’s excellent teams to participate inprestigious state, regional and national competitionseach semester against squads fromFlorida, Southeast and Top Tier law schools.Pro Bono WorkAnnual Fund contributions help matchfunds provided by various entities to providestipends to students working in public interestorganizations or doing pro bono work.Law College CouncilAllocates Annual Fund monies todeserving law student organizations to helpdefray symposia and conference costsincluding speakers’ fees, printing and otherevent costs.John Marshall Bar AssociationThe outstanding and historic lawstudent government is funded in part byAnnual Fund monies, as are the many groupsoverseen by Law College Council.Essentials ProvidedAdditional vital UFLaw elements coveredthrough Annual Fund contributions are:1. Scholarship and loan assistance2. Innovative Book Awards3. Stipends for student research assistants4. Strengthening of law library5. Support services and programs forstudents, alumni6. Funding for conferences, lectures7. Influencing national rankings andrecruitment of students and facultyEach year UFLaw needs to raise morethan $500,000 in new donor Annual Fundcontributions. Currently about 10-12percent of UFLaw’s 15,000 living alums arecontributing.Experience is an invaluable form ofinstruction, and a truly great legal educationrequires public financial support toensure a range of activities to promoteintellectual, professional and social growth.2 ANNUAL REPORT

Contributingis a way of giving back to the school, as did the alumni whocame before us, and to the next generation of students. It isa way of saying ‘Thank you.’The school has a great environment for learning and fosteringcreativity, but setting out to become one of the Top 10 publiclaw schools is not enough. We should seek to be one of theTop 10, public AND private. Affectionately referred to by students through the years as the “habitrail,”the structure was made possible by a $50,000 gift from Parrish to the Bruton-Geer buildingcampaign in 1981, and connects that facility to Holland Hall. “This is a monument to a very finefaculty and student body that has served Florida well for many, many years,” he said. closing argumentsM E S S A G E F R O M T H E D E A NI HAVE ALWAYS HAD PRIDE IN OURALUMNI AND OUR HERITAGE.Recently our newset graduatestook action to supportthat heritage and begin acommitment to the future oftheir college. As you have readelsewhere in this Report,we average about 10-12percent alumni contributionrate – or around 1,920of 16,000 graduates – yearin and year out. We can dobetter, and our new graduatesare out to make thathappen. The graduating classesof Fall 2001 and Spring 2002contributed and pledgedover $18,000 to give back tomany of the programs andorganizations that helpedthem on their way to the successwe know they willattain. These voluntary giftscame before any of themreceived their first paycheckand at a time they have anaverage post-graduation debtof more than $42,000.What an impressivesacrifice this is. With over33 percent of the two graduatingclasses contributingthe trend is set. Such vitalstudent activities as FloridaLaw Review, Moot Court,Trial Team and multipleorganizations will benefitgreatly. Pride in the past andhope for the future is themessage these new alumniare sending.Just as these classeshave set new precedents, our faculty and staff haveworked hard to prepare ourstudents for their futurecareers. I would especiallylike to thank AppointmentsCommittee Chair DavidRichardson for his hardwork in continuing torecruit and hire one of thestrongest faculties in thecountry. The fact we are able torecruit the best says a lot foreveryone at the school. Thisfiscal year 2001-02 has beenone of the best ever in termsof faculty recruiting and hiring.Environmental Law,Childrens and Family Lawand Dispute Resolutionare establishing nationallyrenowned programs. Wealso will replace our exceptionalDirector of LibrariesGrace “Betty” Taylor withan internationally recognizednew Director ofLibraries Kathleen Price –who counts Betty as hermentor. The combination ofunique and innovative programs;diverse, creativeand extraordinary faculty;and a diverse, high qualitystudent body demonstratewhy our rise into the Top10 is inevitable. The college’sStrategic Plan laysout a plan to meet thatobjective. We plan on animproved student teacherratio, skills training, enhanced faculty scholarshipand teaching, anddynamic changes in ourinstitutional focus. Allof these initiatives areunderway.I have said before thatour greatest weakness isour facilities. The lastmajor upgrades and renovationswere about 20years ago. The astonishing‘fundraising‘ success of2001 will allow us to proceedwith groundbreakingin 2003 for a $23 millionstate of the art library andclassrooms. These facilitieswill match the excellenceof our faculty, staff, students and alumni. Each new semesterbrings a greater demand toattend our college. TheLSAT scores and grades ofthe entering classes are thehighest ever. Although thejob market and economymay be tough, the graduatesof the College of Laware doing well. Thanks tothe hard work of ourCareer Services office forhelping our Class of 2001-02 achieve a 97 percentplacement rate ninemonths after graduation. We are no longer only aFlorida college but anational institution. Thestudents are being hired bythe best firms in the countryand are locatingin Atlanta, New York,Washington and beyond. We have all the elementsthat lead us towardsa Top 10 college. Our newgraduates have recognizedthe value of their educationand the importance ofinvesting in our future. All of us as alumnineed to consider followingtheir example. If our16,000 graduates matchthe level of giving of ournew graduates our givingrate will triple. That’s a nice challenge.Dean Jon Mills
