To approach complexproblems, mathematicians use models and analyticmethods and therefore the subject is very well suitedto those who are interested in problem solving. Alsothe computer is a natural tool for an applied mathematician- complicated models usually need to be analysedby means of computers.Programme modules/coursesCompulsory courses: The first part of the three-yearprogramme stretches over three semesters and coversbasic training in algebra and mathematical analysisin one and several variables, basic physics and a shortintroduction to other science subjects.Electives: The content of the second part of the programmedepends on the chosen area of interest andcan, for instance, consist of courses in mathematics, mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, physics, computer science or economics. The programme endswith a Bachelor’s degree project on a topic of interestchosen in consultation with a supervisor.Career prospectsMathematics is inherent in a manifold of technicaland scientific achievements. As an example we canmention the notion of a differential equation whichso far has been a most adequate tool for describingdynamical phenomena. The subject of mathematicsplays a special role as an exact science with emphasison quantitative aspects. This in turn makes thesubject a highly relevant tool in a number of areaswhere quantitative analysis is needed.Admission requirementsGeneral and courses corresponding to the followingSwedish Upper Secondary School Programs: Physics B,Chemistry A and Mathematics D.See www.lunduniversity.lu.se for details on requiredEnglish proficiency levels. How to applyFollow the instructions on pages 100-101.Selection criteria/additional infoThe general average (GPA) of your higher secondaryschool leaving certificate.Tuition feesThere are no tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens. Understanding the environment, including increasing demands and exploitation ofnatural resources as a result of population growth, isprobably the greatest emerging challenge influencingour future. The demand for well-educated and highlyskilled graduates within this field is, and will remain, extremely high.Lund University is now offering a world-class BScprogramme in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, focusing on environmental modeling and management.A unique blend of courses results in a highprofiledegree from a top international universitiy - aperfect platform for a career or for further studies. The programme is based on courses in climatology, climatechange, ecosystems science and geomorphologybut also covers edcosystem modelling, geographicalinformation systems, remote sensing and statistics andcontains elements of chemistry and physics.Programme modules/coursesCourses are taken in subjects such as climatology, geographical information science, programming andenvironmental modelling. Theory and practice are integratedon different scales (local to global) as well asin different locations (e.g. both industrial and non-industrialcountries). Close contact with private and governmentalbodies and field-work/visits within Europeas well as to Asia and/or Africa are natural ingredientsof the programme. You have several options to personalisethe content of your BSc, by selecting courses at thedepartment and one semester is elective courses fromother departments. Courses that are recommended toinclude in your BSc are: An Introduction to the GlobalEnvironment (15 ECTS), Remote Sensing for LandscapeStudies (15 ECTS), Ecosystem Analysis (15 ECTS), TheClimate System (15 ECTS), Theory and Methods (15ECTS), Land Surface Processes and Landscape Dynamics(15 ECTS), Geographical Information Systems 1 (15ECTS) and Geographical Information Systems 2 (15ECTS).Career prospectsAfter graduation you can either start work as an environmentalspecialist or continue with Master’s studies,in Lund or at another university. Examples of Master’sprogrammes offered in Lund are Geomatics, PhysicalGeography and Ecosystems Sciences, and the highlyprestigious Erasmus Mundus GEM (Geo-informationand Earth Observation for Environmental Modellingand Management). This BSc programme is truly unique. Physicsis the basis for this endeavour and physicists play animportant role in these and many other fields. Lund isconsistently ranked as the top university in NorthernEurope in physical sciences and this excellence is nowexpanding through the building of two internationalresearch centres – MAX IV and ESS. Around the universityand the centres, you will find a large numberof innovation companies, making Lund a motor in theeconomy of southern Scandinavia. Physicists in Lundare working on the cutting edge of everything fromparticle physics at CERN to nanoscience and photonics.Programme modules/coursesCompulsory courses: The programme starts with ayear of basic mathematics, physics and an introductionto science, common with the Bachelor’s programmes inMathematics and Physical Geography. The second yeargives the tools for further studies in physics, throughone semester of mathematics and one of theoreticalphysics. The fifth semester gives an overview of physicsin Lund, through courses in atomic and molecularphysics, nuclear physics and reactors, materials scienceand particle physics and accelerators.Electives: Half of the sixth semester consists of an electivecourse, to gain a deeper and broader understandingin physics.
