Class of 2011 SpeechMariam Tareq KhalilClass of 2011 RepresentativeYour Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, CrownPrince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAEArmed Forces, your Highnesses, your Excellencies, honorable anddistinguished guests, proud family and friends, faculty members, and, above all, the very reason for our presence here today, members of theClass of 2011: welcome to our Commencement ceremony. Thank youall for giving me the very great honor of representing my graduatingclass today. On this special day, we gather to celebrate our academic success, and Iwould like to congratulate all the members of the graduating class onreaching this most important milestone in their professional careers. This day, however, marks not the end of the journey, but simply the endof a chapter of our lives. We all know how much there is still to learnand that our degrees are but a gateway to a world of opportunity. To reach the end of this chapter of our lives, we have all without doubtlived through a most demanding experience. As Petroleum Institutestudents, we strived to succeed in our chosen subjects, and we all experiencedvarious ups and downs over the years. Both, however, servedto make us stronger as we learned from our successes as well as fromour failures.to fear failure greatly myself, until I reached this understanding; nowI see failure as a learning opportunity. On this point, I would like toshare a very inspiring quote. Jerry Zucker once observed that “Nobodyelse is paying as much attention to your failures as you are... to everyoneelse, they’re just blips on the radar screen, so just move on.” Thisquote tells me that we should not become dispirited by our failures, but instead we should always look forward, to the next opportunityfor success. I believe that it is important always to try, and to try thebest we can and never give up.After all, the world is run by those who show up and do, not by thosewho sit and wait …. And we, the Class of 2011 – we showed up! Wedid it! We worked in accord with the ideals of the UAE’s visionaryfounder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, when he declared that: “the role of a woman is no less than that of aman”.I wish you all prosperity, success, fulfillment, happiness and health inall you undertake.Thank you.As a student, I observed that some people are driven by a desire to succeed, while others are driven more by a fear of failure. I believe that itis important to focus on success, while recognizing that some failure isinevitable, given the richness and complexity of modern living. Advanced University PlacementDr. Graeme WardProgram DirectorTo the Class of 2011,It is my pleasure to extend the congratulations of the AUP familyfor one great achievement of your lives, your graduation - truly anoutstanding accomplishment. We are proud of you.For those who began your studies within the Foundation Programand made that early step from high school to university with theguidance of AUP instructors, we viewed your struggles and yourevolution as you came to terms with heavy workloads and ungenerous– but realistic PI grading. As graduates ourselves, we understoodthe frustrations you felt... when you succeeded we admiredyou for it, and when you didn’t, we shared your pain.To achieve something this worthwhile takes talent as well as sacrifice, and we are all aware, there were many who couldn’t completethe distance; this, is perfectly normal. However, with your best effortsand the help of your instructors, you have all grown in statureand ability, moving onwards to finally stand together as graduates.Graduation is unquestionably a great achievement. Cherish it andshare it with your family and all of those who take pride in youraccomplishments. On behalf of the AUP Program – our congratulations, Engineers!FacultyAssociate ProfessorJamal Hajsaleh, PhysicsAssistant ProfessorJean-Pierre Atanas, PhysicsAhmed El Sheakh, ComputingNihad Hamid, PhysicsAsli Hassan, EnglishGary Miller, MathematicsMutasem Sinnokrot, ChemistryTrung Tran, MathematicsGraeme Ward, MathematicsSenior LecturerLaura Lau, EnglishWilliam Rindfleisch, EnglishLecturerDavid Adcock, ChemistryErnest Afari, MathematicsMariam Al Hanai, MathematicsMara Barrow, EnglishJane Chambers, ComputingShari Corbin, EnglishConstance Eide, EnglishWael El Sokkary, EnglishSamira Fahmi, EnglishHedi Guefrachi, EnglishNabee Hasheem, PhysicsEnaam Hunaini, EnglishDonald Langille, EnglishNeville Martin, MathematicsMary McDermott, ChemistryDominic Munster, MathematicsNausheen Pasha, EnglishLynne Robinson, EnglishRehana Rostron, ChemistrySamira Stitou, MathematicsRichard Tapper, ChemistryDavid Thomas, EnglishDavid Thomson, EnglishColin Toms, EnglishDavid Westley, ComputingSixth Annual Commencement - Class of 201110book-ENGV2-1.indd 101/8/2012 3:06:14 PM

A key component of the program is student’s access toadvanced laboratories, including computer laboratories where the reservoirscan be studied in three dimension using reflection seismic andother data in a virtual reality format. This greatly facilitates the understandingof the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy and relationshipsbetween reservoir geology and petroleum production. Project courseson Reservoir Characterization and Petroleum Systems, which typicallyinclude the study of problems utilizing real data from UAE reservoirs, are offered in the final semester.FacultyProfessorIhsan Al AasmSadoon Morad, ADOC ChairThomas SteuberAssociate ProfessorMohammed AliAssistant ProfessorYoucef BouzidiFlavia FioriniStephen LokierSandra VegaSixth Annual Commencement - Class of 201120book-ENGV2-1.indd 201/8/2012 3:06:15 PM

Academic RegaliaThe present day academic ceremonial dress worn by facultyand graduates at Commencement ceremonies is basedupon clothing worn nearly eight hundred years ago in Englishuniversities, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge. The tradition was brought to the United States during colonialdays, and led to the development of American AcademicRegalia.By the twentieth century, institutions of higher learning inthe United States had adopted a well-defined code of academicattire, identifying different academic degrees withdistinctive gowns, caps and colors, some of which are nowin use at the Petroleum Institute. The Baccalaureate gown is worn closed and is identified bylong, pleated front panels and long, pointed sleeves.Faculty may choose to wear the attire of the academic institutionfrom which they received their highest degree. In lieu of academic regalia, the Petroleum Institute’s UAEfaculty may wear National Dress. The cap is adorned with a tassel, which is black if the wearerhas earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, and gold ifthe wearer has earned a Doctorate or is a governing officerof an educational institution. A small medal displaying theclass year may also be attached to the tassel. With the increase in the number of educational institutionsand the development of new subject-matter fields, the American Council on Education adopts specific colorsto denote different degrees. The Petroleum Institute graduateswear orange for engineering, and gold for sciences. The Master’s gown has very long sleeves which areclosed at the end, with an opening for the wearer’s armsat midpoint.Students graduating with “honor with distinction” weara long wide gold cord with tassels, while those graduatingwith “honor” wear a similar cord in silver.Doctoral gowns may be worn open, and they are distinguishedby velvet panels, which may be black or in thecolor that designates the wearer’s discipline. These regalia were first adopted at the Petroleum Instituteby the Class of 2011.Sixth Annual Commencement - Class of 201122book-ENGV2-1.indd 221/8/2012 3:06:15 PM

The GonfalonThe gonfalon, a banner suspended from a crosspiece orframe, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as anensign of states or princes. Gonfalons have been adoptedin many universities around the world as part of collegeor institutional insignia, and they are used in academicprocessions to identify colleges and schools within theuniversity. Student marshals carry the gonfalons and at thePetroleum Institute, large ones represent the five degreeawardingprograms and the graduate program. Smaller ensignsrepresent previous graduating classes. The Class RingThe class ring is normally worn by senior college studentsand alumni to commemorate their graduation. The traditionof the class ring originated at the United States MilitaryAcademy at West Point in 1835. Since then, numeroushigh schools, colleges and universities have adoptedthis practice and designed unique class rings for theirown alumni. The Petroleum Institute’s class ring features the Institute’slogo on the face of the ring with the degree awarded (BSc,MEng, MSc) and year of graduation inscribed on eitherside of the ring. Female graduates’ rings have an oval facewhile male graduates’ rings have a square face.
