The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> is a vibrant centerpiece <strong>of</strong> <strong>UW</strong>M’s growingmandate for research. The University seeks a distinguished individual <strong>of</strong> outstanding integrity to serveas <strong>Dean</strong>, providing strategic leadership and promoting excellence in all facets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>’sactivities.The UniversityOne <strong>of</strong> two doctoral-granting institutions in <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin System, <strong>UW</strong>M was founded in1956 based on <strong>the</strong> belief that <strong>Milwaukee</strong> would need a great public university to become a great andthriving city. Quality education, excellence in research, and community service are all central to <strong>the</strong>University’s mission. <strong>UW</strong>M enjoys a growing national reputation for excellence in research, qualitystudent education and sustained community engagement. The university’s workforce <strong>of</strong> almost 8,400 includes 874 faculty, 800 instructional academicstaff, 997 administrative staff, 1,349 graduate assistants, 3,011 student workers and 1,220 classifiedpersonnel. <strong>UW</strong>M is clearly focused on 21st century goals and objectives. In response to emergingopportunities and targeted priorities, <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Regents has included $10 million in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UW</strong> systemwidebiennial budget for 2011-13 to fund “Powering Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Wisconsin’s Knowledge-BasedEconomy: Phase 2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>UW</strong>-<strong>Milwaukee</strong>’s Research Initiative.”<strong>UW</strong>M is home to outstanding departments, academic centers, institutes, and laboratory facilities withworldwide reputations for innovation and excellence. <strong>UW</strong>M’s 183 degree programs include 96undergraduate degrees, 1 specialist and 86 graduate degrees, through 14 <strong>School</strong>s and Colleges. The<strong>School</strong>s and Colleges include: Architecture and Urban Planning, Continuing Education, Education,Engineering and Applied Science, Freshwater Sciences, <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Health Sciences, Helen Bader<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social Welfare, Information Studies, Letters and Science, Nursing, Peck <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts,Joseph J. Zilber <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Public Health, and <strong>the</strong> Sheldon B. Lubar <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business. Highly regardedpr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>School</strong>s and Colleges broaden and deepen <strong>the</strong> academic quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>UW</strong>M.2
In Fall 2012 <strong>UW</strong>M enrolled 29,145 students— 24,199 undergraduates and 4,946 graduate students.<strong>UW</strong>M is <strong>the</strong> second largest graduate degree-granting institution in <strong>the</strong> state, averaging over 3,150master's students and over 1,350 doctoral students per year. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se students earn prestigiousawards from institutions such as <strong>the</strong> Ford Foundation, <strong>the</strong> National Science Foundation, <strong>the</strong> McNairProgram, and <strong>the</strong> Big Ten Consortium for Institutional Cooperation.<strong>UW</strong>M is committed to diversity and has <strong>the</strong> largest undergraduate enrollment <strong>of</strong> students <strong>of</strong> color (over4,600) in <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin System. It also enrolls about 1,000 international students. <strong>UW</strong>Meducates more individuals who are age 35 and older than any o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>UW</strong> System institution, and enrollsmore than one-third <strong>of</strong> all <strong>UW</strong> System students age 60 and older. More than 1,200 students attending<strong>UW</strong>M are military veterans or dependents—<strong>the</strong> largest total in <strong>the</strong> System. To ensure students areregarded on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> ability and not disability, <strong>the</strong> Student Accessibility Center opens additionaldoors through its Deaf/Hard <strong>of</strong> Hearing Program, Blind/Visually Impaired Program, Mobility/PhysicalDisabilities Services and more.At its core, <strong>UW</strong>M is a highly engaged community <strong>of</strong> faculty, staff, and students committed to learning,discovery, and creative expression. Multiple areas <strong>of</strong> excellence are present in many units within <strong>the</strong> artsand humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional schools across <strong>the</strong> campus. TheUniversity is a premier doctoral research university with 32 doctoral programs, and is intent onincreasing <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> extramural support and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> doctoral programs, enhancing <strong>the</strong> ratio <strong>of</strong>graduate-to-undergraduate students, and continuing to increase <strong>the</strong> quantity and quality <strong>of</strong> research andscholarship.3
