The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-<strong>Milwaukee</strong> is a free-standing <strong>School</strong> thatadministers 32 doctoral programs, 54 master’s programs, and 33 graduate certificate programs across allDepartments and <strong>School</strong>s. <strong>Graduate</strong> research at <strong>UW</strong>M has made significant contributions to a broadspectrum <strong>of</strong> fields and projects in <strong>Milwaukee</strong> and Wisconsin, as well as throughout <strong>the</strong> United Statesand <strong>the</strong> world. <strong>UW</strong>M graduate programs range from traditional fields <strong>of</strong> study to innovative new pathsthat reach across multiple disciplines - a growing number <strong>of</strong> which can be pursued online. Our currentprogram array is featured on <strong>the</strong> next page.The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> features a renowned, highly productive, andinvolved faculty, including many Distinguished Pr<strong>of</strong>essors. Conductingcutting edge research, our <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty members are in highdemand to present <strong>the</strong>ir work at conferences and venues throughout <strong>the</strong>country and abroad. They also embrace <strong>the</strong>ir roles as graduate teachersand advisors, and <strong>the</strong> accessibility <strong>of</strong> such a distinguished graduatefaculty is what students tell us <strong>the</strong>y like most about <strong>the</strong>ir studies at<strong>UW</strong>M. The University also boasts a diverse student population, drawingfrom <strong>the</strong> local <strong>Milwaukee</strong> area, <strong>the</strong> state, nation and <strong>the</strong> world.University enrollment exceeds 29,000 students, including 4,946 from <strong>the</strong><strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>. These students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, contributing <strong>the</strong>richness <strong>of</strong> graduate education at <strong>UW</strong>M. Moreover, graduate enrollment continues to expand along with<strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>, growing by 26 percent overall, and by 70 percent in doctoral students in <strong>the</strong> lastten years.The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> at <strong>UW</strong>M maintains a deep commitment to providing resources and recruitmentefforts that support and grow this diverse graduate student body along lines <strong>of</strong> racial/ethnic identity,gender, sexual orientation, and economic and social status – most significantly as <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>most historic and successful McNair Scholars Programs in <strong>the</strong> country. The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> has alsorecently initiated a dynamic new marketing campaign aimed at increasing <strong>the</strong> quality and diversity <strong>of</strong>our graduate student population. This initiative includes fostering a social media presence, creatingbranded <strong>UW</strong>M <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> marketing materials, attending <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> fairs and conferencesacross <strong>the</strong> nation, hiring a full-time recruiter, and o<strong>the</strong>r activities designed to proactively recruit andretain students, while creating a culture that embodies a positive graduate experience.The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> has also worked to streng<strong>the</strong>n resources and support for greater access to graduateresearch and education, increasing extramural funding by 200 percent, and annually awarding more than$6 million in graduate fellowships and scholarships. The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> also grants teaching, project,and research assistantships to approximately one quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school’s students, comprising a criticalcomponent <strong>of</strong> <strong>UW</strong>M’s growing research enterprise by conducting important, rewarding, and publishableresearch that supports academic programs and faculty mentors, while also providing students withvaluable tools and resources for advancing <strong>the</strong>ir own course <strong>of</strong> study and pursuing career goals.Moreover, nearly $62 million was spent on research at <strong>UW</strong>M from 2010-2011—much <strong>of</strong> it from <strong>the</strong>National Science Foundation and National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health—marking a 51 percent increase inresearch funding over just six years.6
