COLLECTIVE MATERIAL CONDITIONS.Nowadays, the greatest concentration of art galleries is in the historic and traditional centre of the city (forexample, at Rua Miguel Bombarda and surrounding streets). These places have contributed to secure aninteresting local cultural dynamic connected with the activity of the galleries.Museums are also among the cultural facilities that are closer to the population of the city, and have animportant capacity to attract both national and international visitors. Due to the variety of the objects/themesexhibited and of the activities promoted, these facilities are an important vehicle for the promotion of the city’sculture.An analysis of the evolution of the number of museums in the space of a decade (1991-2001) shows aclear increase from 14 to the 26 currently existing museums.Because of the more diversified nature of their intervention and, therefore, of their audiences, some of themuseums have gained notoriety outside the city and the Country, as is the case of the Serralves Museum ofContemporary Art, which benefits from the fact that it is also a reference work of architecture.Others, because of their specificity and of their valuable heritage in terms of the works of art and/or of thehistory they contain, are also inevitable points of reference in the cultural scene of the city. It also plays an important health role and is an undeniable factor of social welfare.In terms of sports infrastructures, the city currently has 49 swimming pools, 34 sports pavilions and 469sports facilities.
