1. PURPOSEThe purpose of this policy is to ensure uniformity regarding tree managementwithin the Drakenstein municipal area.There is no existing policy regarding the management of street trees withinDrakenstein. As a result thereof, ad hoc decisions are taken and no uniform setof standards is applied.Drakenstein is blessed with an abundance of street trees which enhance theurban environment. Trees moderate noise pollution, dust and other airbornepollutants. They provide shelter and food for wildlife and the aesthetic value oftrees is very important. It is necessary to protect and manage these valuableassets and their habitat in order to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of theresidents of Drakenstein.2. SCOPEIt is predicted that urban greening will steadily gain priority on the political agendain the Drakenstein area as politicians attempt to find ways to address twoimportant issues: general urban deterioration and the urban environmental crisis.Given the fact that the provision of basic needs are of paramount importance,these issues are not high on the political agenda at present. As the basic needsare addressed, urban greening will become more of a priority.The various tree species have different growth characteristics, i.e. shape, growthrate, size when fully grown, wind and drought resistance, vigorous andaggressive root systems, deciduous or evergreen, flower- and/or fruit-bearing,etc. These characteristics must be considered when tree species are selected forplanting in residential areas and it is therefore essential that specie lists areprepared for different areas according to local weather and other conditions. It isnecessary to apply a tree policy to address and provide guidelines regarding ourstreet trees.Due to the lack of awareness regarding the benefits of beautifying areas,programmes must be introduced to promote tree planting in such areas.Drakenstein Municipality – Tree Management Policy Page 1
