We work closely with localpolice and provide them with all necessarysupport to pursue the prosecution of offenderswhere it is possible.”Meanwhile figures show that the number ofchildren be<strong>in</strong>g treated at Ormskirk A&EDepartment has soared by almost 20% over thelast five years.Children admitted to the Accident andEmergency department <strong>in</strong>creased from 20,815<strong>in</strong> 2007–8 to 21,959 <strong>in</strong> 2008–9 and some22,120 children admitted <strong>in</strong> 2009/10.Southport Hospital.There were 24,464 admitted <strong>in</strong> 2010/11,some 24,130 <strong>in</strong> 2011/12 and 24,371 <strong>in</strong>2012–3.Adults treated <strong>in</strong> the Accident and Emergencydepartment at Southport decreased overallfrom 47,443 <strong>in</strong> 2007–8 to <strong>in</strong> 47,230 <strong>in</strong>2012–13 despite ris<strong>in</strong>g from 2007/8 to2010/11.Shirley Coward, matron for child health, said:“We know from the feedback we get that thecare our staff provide at Ormskirk hospital isvery much appreciated by children’s parents.“There has been a national trend towardsmore children attend<strong>in</strong>g accident andemergency departments. We have also noticedmore children com<strong>in</strong>g to see us from outsidethe hospital’s natural catchment area ofSouthport, Formby and West Lancashire.“However, it is important that parentsexam<strong>in</strong>e their options before br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g a childto A&E.
