The president’s report2012 eventswell planned4Ross BerghoferWelcome to the 2012 club yearand your first magazine for theyear. As usual, to get things rolling the committeehad its January meeting to plan for the yearahead — but we did it differently this year.Instead of having a barbecue at a member’shome, the meeting was held in the air-conditionedcomfort of the Western Suburbs AussieRules club at Croydon Park. This also resulted in a shorter meeting withdiscussion to the point. Things went so well thatwe will probably to it again in 2013.At the meeting the club resolved to re-affiliatewith the Confederation of Australia MotorSports (CAMS) at a cost of $1,035 and with theCouncil of Motor Clubs for $180.The enormous advantage of CAMS affiliationis that it enables members to compete inserious sporting events and affiliation providesautomatic insurance cover for the club, thushelping to protect it and its members. At the meeting Brian Jubb, our social secretary, produced a calendar of events that helpedplan for 2012. So, if you are thinking of organisingan event for the club — and we welcomemembers’ input to club activities — pleasecontact him to discuss a timeframe that will fitin with the calendar. This may not affect so much some of theregional groups as their events are directed tolocal members. Having stated that, we knowthat all members would like to attend regionalactivities if they have the opportunity to do so.In mid December Sandra and I drove our406 to Gunnedah for family reasons. Duringthe trip, there were some interesting Peugeotsightings. Firstly, the 4007 seems to be popularin the Hunter region, with quite a few of themon the road.Another unusual sight was a Peugeot Partnertowing a big caravan through Murrurundi. I donot know if the driver was on a road trip, or ifthe vehicle was moving the caravan a few kaysup the road.I wondered how a little Pug would handlesome of the big hills of the New EnglandHighway with a heavy weight behind it.I collected some goodies from PeugeotAustralia, left over from the move fromHill Road to the premises at Flemington onParramatta Road. This includes a tall Peugeot logo that youwould see on the blue Peugeot shop and acouple of posters that would be valuable toPeugeotphiles. I will bring them to a club meetingfor members to ogle over.In the meantime, keep on Pugging on andkeep those wagons rolling.Feb OASIS runTed de LissaI trust everybody had a great Christmasbreak and are enjoying the New Year.It is that time again to resume ourOASIS Runs. For the OASIS Run on 7February we will be visiting the Go/ShuSake Factroy in Penrith. Here we will begiven a 1 hour guided tour and learn abouthow Sake is made.,We will be able to enjoy a tasting,(optional) and purchase Japanese artifacts. The tour is quite expensive at $2for pensioners and $3 for non pensioners.Following the visit we will have lunch atthe Leonay Golf Club. Meet at McDonald’sSouthside on the M4 at 9.00am for a10.00am departure.A detailed itinerary for the first half of2012 will be available in the next issue ofthe Pugilist. Should you have any ideas forOASIS destinations, please let me know.

Peugeot infront andbehindPeugeot UpdatePeter WilsonIn spite of a shocking result for December,Peugeot finished 2011 as the leading Frenchautomotive brand in Australia, behind its2010 total, but with hopes of new modelsachieving a big year this year.Official scores showed the national vehiclemarket topped a million new registrations, butwas down 2.6 per cent in volume on the previousyear. The Federal Chamber of AutomotiveIndustries attributed this fall to “challengingmarket conditions and significant supply problems”as well as the natural disasters at home.Peugeot had its share of Japanese earthquakeproblems and factory downtimes affectingits deliveries as well as a resurgent Frenchrival and other strong European competition.By October, its 463 new registrations hadtopped the 409 of October 2010 and November’s453 topped the 402 of November 2010.But Peugeot’s December figure slumped to252 units, less than half the 557 the previousDecember. Despite the end-of-year inducements,it was the worst December result for themarque since 2000.Sales fell for every model except the 508and the 75 deliveries of the top-of-the-rangesedan were the best since its release. Theexpected volume models, the 207 and 308, weredown to 41 and 75 respectively. For the first time since its return to theAustralian market, in December Renault overtookPeugeot, almost doubling its sales to 397on the 221 the previous December and finishingthe year on a high of 3,622, almost double its1,907 in 2010.Renault had the advantages of fresher models,South Korean costs for some and five-yearwarranties.Peugeot finished the year witha total of 5,220, 7.6 per cent – 429units – down on the 2010 sales of5,649. It was a 10-year low, butstill 1,668 ahead of what had beena record result of 3,552 in 2001.Citroën had a below average92 in December to finish the yearwith 1,415 sales, 188 less than its1,603 in 2010.An indication of the intensityof European competition wasVolvo’s 546 sales in Decemberthat gave it 5,272 for the year, edgingahead of Peugeot. Sightingsof Opels driving about Sydneyremind that some models successfullymarketed as Holdens will besold this year under that GeneralMotors badge.Automobiles Peugeot, long a tight-marginvolume producer, has been too dependent onEuropean sales, hit hard since the end of subsidiesand financial crises, so it is trying tobuilt more higher margin upmarket models andincrease its markets outside Europe.A total of 2,114,000 Peugeots were soldglobally, a little down on 2010, but an improvementto 48 per cent outside Europe. Most exportmarkets were up – Russia, Asia, Latin Americaand New Zealand – so Australia was an oddone out.The big success was the 308-based RCZcoupé, which has beaten the Audi TT globallywith sales of over 19,000 units. It has also donewell in Australia, with 152 sales in 2010 and304 in 2011, but Audi is strong here, withplenty of factory cash, and TT sales againtopped 400.The launch of the 508 was deemed an internationalsuccess with 121,000 sales. However, with Australia starved of this model it failedto have the immediate impact here of the 407,which sold in in triple figures in its first threemonths to a market hungry for diesels. The 75 deliveries of 508s in December– including back orders – were the best since itslaunch and the year-end tally was just 285.Peugeot has indicated there does not appearto be any constraint on Australian 508 supplynow so this year will indicate if it ticks all theboxes for prospective buyers. Some of our 307-owning members havetraded up to the 308, an improved model, butthe market does not appear to have shown the2011 Peugeot Salessame loyalty and its volumes have been consistentlylower despite the reduction in warrantyissues. This might be a hangover from qualityproblems with the 307, which AutomobilesPeugeot acknowledged at the highest level. In 2011, the 1,737 sales of 308s were 38.6per cent down on the previous year’s 2,827units. Things improved when the facelift modelappeared – a lift in registrations to 179 inOctober, 142 in November and 75, the lowestmonth of the year, in December. Thanks to the Sportium package, the 207made a sales comeback and its 1,268 in 2011trumped the 943 in 2010 and the 853 in 2009.But sales started to slow in September and bottomedat 41 in December. An observer suggested the market might notbe ready to accept small eco-friendly engines, fearing they work too hard and might wear toosoon, when bigger ones are about. However,Volkswagen has been doing well with smallengines, though dismayed owners of oil-gulpingGolf diesels might be reluctant to buyanother.Another put-off is the four-speed auto, whichis old hat when six-speed boxes are about.Pluses that are hardly known are Peugeot’sgreat safety record – shown in accident statistics– and the new short-term fixed-price servicingcharges for new models. In my case it was a very welcomedistraction.Helen Louran & Emma Moore, enjoying a break from the karts11

Peugeot news14Three pot screamsto the rescueSimon CraigPeugeot has launched a newthree-cylinder petrol engine assemblyline at its Trémery plant.Philippe Varin, Chairman of the PSAPeugeot Citroën Managing Board, and ChristianGalliard de Lavernée, Prefect of France’sLorraine region, recently inaugurated the productionunit for a new family of three-cylinderpetrol engines at its Trémery plant in Moselle, eastern France. For those not familiar, Trémery is PSA’sdiesel engine production facility, making thegroup’s 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.2 litre HDi engines,as well as those for engine partner Ford and itssubsidiary Volvo. For power-hungry HDi enthusiasts, the 2.7and 3.0 engines are made in Ford’s Dagenhamplant in the UK.Since the Trémery factory opened in 1979(long before the current engines were around),the total number of engines produced there hastopped 35 million units. The plant currently has 3,720 employees.A little while ago, Peugeot decided to conductan in-depth overhaul of its small enginelineup, in a project that is just as important asits HDi diesel engine initiative. This new family of three-cylinder enginesare designed to be more efficient and cleaner(thanks to their smaller size), while maintainingperformance in terms of power and torque.More compact and delivering 68 to 82horsepower, the new three-cylinder engineswill reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissionsby 25% compared with today’s fourcylinder engines. The plan is that “drivers will see theirenergy consumption reduced by approximately1.5 litres per 100 kilometres while maintainingoptimal driving enjoyment.”The new engines will be fitted to the futurePeugeot 208 (covered in the December editionof the Pugilist), to be launched in Europe infirst-quarter 2012, with CO2 emissions of just104 grams per km for its 1.2-litre VTi 82hp versionand 99 grams per km for its 1.0-litre VTi68hp version.

The Group has invested €717 million in theproject, launched in early 2008, of which €460million has been for research and development. In all, 52 patents have been filed and 1,200engineers and technicians have been involved.A total of €257 million was allocated for capitalspending projects in eastern France, mainlyat the Trémery plant. In the start-up phase since September2011, the new EB engine will be produced atTrémery. The project has a potential annual productioncapacity of 640,000 engines and will create500 jobs.In a second phase, the new engines designedin France will be produced in Latin Americaand China to meet local needs and will representa key asset for the Group’s internationalexpansion. The new three-cylinder petrol engine, whichintegrates the most advanced environmentaltechnology, is designed to enable PSA PeugeotCitroën to strengthen its leadership in low-carbonemission vehicles. As yet, there has been no word on whatengines the Australian-delivered version of the208 will have.15

Peugeot Endurance RacingPeugeot exitfrom Le Mansracing16Gary WatkinsPeugeot dropped a bomb on thecar racing world when it announcedin January that it will shut down its 24Hours of Le Mans program. The shock news came on the deadline dayfor entries into the new FIA World EnduranceChampionship, which includes the Frenchendurance classic at Le Mans. The decision brings the curtain down on theFrench manufacturer’s five-year sports-car program, which saw it run two versions of its 908turbodiesel LMP1 coupe. Its successes includedvictory at Le Mans in 2009 and the manufacturers’title in both years of the IntercontinentalLe Mans Cup, which becomes the WEC forthis season.According to a Peugeot spokesperson, thedecision to quit was made at the French company’shighest level.“This decision has been taken against thebackdrop of the challenging economic environmentin Europe coupled with a particularlybusy year for the brand in terms of new vehiclelaunches,” Peugeot said in a statement.“In this context, Peugeot prefers to concentrateits 2012 resources on its commercialperformance and, in particular, ensuring thesuccessful launches of the 208, 3008 HYbrid4,508 RXH, 508 HYbrid4 and 4008, which willtake forward the brand’s strategy of movingupmarket and extending its global presence.”Peugeot in 2012 had been expected to run ahybrid version of last year’s second-generation 908.The end of the Peugeot program means thatAudi will be the only manufacturer contestinga full season of WEC events in LMP1.Toyota will contest only selected events and LeMans with its new petrol-electric LMP1 hybrid.— from Autoweek.René Fagnan of Auto123.com spoke to aveteran of the Peugeot Sport race team, whosaid: “No one saw that one coming. Not atall. Yesterday, we got a message to gather alltogether at 4 p.m. And we were told the badnews.”An hour later, the official press release wasposted on the web.“This decision is quite hard to understand,”the contact said. “Just after Christmas werestarted the manufacturing of parts processand we had just received the 2012 tubs. The testteam was down in Sebring, Florida to do sometesting when they got the news. Now, they’regetting prepared to fly back here in Velizy.“This week, we were deciding if we weregoing to enter three or four 908s at Le Mans, and how many of these cars would be hybrids. The news was a shock – a major blow on ourheads.“We will be offered redeployment solutionswithin the company and internal mobility, butthe worst part is that we will lose more than onehundred of our very qualified and highly skilledpersons. The situation is really dramatic for ouryounger mechanics and technicians.“We’re going to lose everything. If Peugeotever wants to go back racing, they will have tobuild everything from scratch.”Peugeot does not want to see the 908s beingentered and raced by privateers, he confirmed.“No. Peugeot does not want to see a single908 leave the factory,” he said. “One privateteam has already offered Peugeot to race ourcars, but it got a definite no as an answer. It’sall over. Period.” he said.Pictures: Peugeot Media

It’s a barely comprehensiblemishmash of traditional Spanish architectureand grey concrete high rise buildings erectedto house tens of thousands of Brits and otherEuropeans for whom the words class andelegance are conspicuously absent from theirvocabularies. But, crucially for a new car launchin February, the weather is extremely agreeable. And the roads are uniformly excellent throughoutthe country, meaning the assembled hackscan really explore a new car’s breadth of scope– providing the draconian speed police don’tget in the way of proceedings.Class and elegance might be completestrangers to most of Alicante’s population butthey’re two words being bandied around quitea bit when it comes to the car we’re here tobecome acquainted with for the first time: thenew Peugeot 508. One of my contemporaries, upon discovering that I was attending the firstdrive of a Peugeot, said he’d rather slash hiswrists and, if I’m honest, I was feeling ratherambivalent about the whole thing myself. Butafter a day and a half of driving the 508 in itsvarious guises, I can report that it’s a car thatdrags Peugeot into the realms of Audi andVolkswagen for the first time. And that’s quitea statement.Wisely the French company has ditched anyMercedes pretensions it may have had with the607 and concentrated its time and resources toproduce a medium-sized car that should lay torest the ghost of the past few years. It’s a handsomecar and that’s a promising start. Gone isthe guppy face of the 407, gone is the blandrear end.The overall shape is complex and lends the508 an air of distinction. It’s colour sensitive, mind, and the choice of alloy wheel design doesimpact on the visual satisfaction – just as thosethings matter on the lovely RCZ. Get the combinationright on either car and it looks brilliant. The SW looks quite lovely, too.All the visual flair in the world couldn’tmake Peugeot a desirable brand if the buildquality remained a joke and this is the one areathey’ve properly gone to town. Every parts supplierwas tasked with upping its game yet stilloffering value for money, every aspect of thecar’s interior was subjected to a rapid ageingprocess to make sure the car still looked newafter three or four years (fleet vehicle managerswere invited to witness this by Peugeot, whichshows how serious they are when it comes toperceived build quality) and the design waskept simple and classy.Interior space has been improved over the407 – in fact the 508’s internal dimensions areon a par with those of the outgoing 607 andthere’s plenty of room for passengers front andrear, even if they’re above average height. Bootspace in the saloon is a generous 545 litres andthe SW offers a cavernous 1865 litres with therear seats folded flat.It almost goes without saying that the 508is greener than either of the models it replaces. It’s lighter than the 407 (by 35kg) yet longer(by 10cm).It’s quieter, too, thanks to advancementsin sound insulation and there are two, moreadvanced, suspension options available – themajority of examples being supplied with aMacPherson Strut set up at the front with multilinkat the rear, with the range-topping GT modelsgetting double-wishbones at the front end. There’s stop/start available on the e-HDiversion, which offers emissions of just 109g/kmand, just to give the Germans a few sleeplessnights, there’s practically every toy and gadgetavailable on the options list.Sitting in the driver’s seat, it’s obvious thatthe 508 represents a huge leap for Peugeot. Thedashboard design is lovely, the instrumentationis smart, the seats are trimmed beautifully andthe steering wheel is nice and thick. It’s easilythe best cabin in its class and anyone who’sbeen disappointed that Volkswagen didn’t overhaulthe interior of the ‘new’ Passat would beadvised to take a seat in the 508. There’s a new,Teutonic feel to everything and, at a stroke, the 508 is no longer competing with Renaultsor Citroёns. Instead it’ll be battling it out withthe Passat and even the Audi A4 for dominancein the world’s company car parks. If middlemanagement types can see past the badge thenPeugeot could just pull it off.On the road the 508 delivers in spades, too.A decent raft of engine and transmissions isavailable from the outset, with more to comein the near future. For now there’s a trio of 1.6-litre petrol engines and diesels come in 1.6, 2.0or 2.2-litre form, with the 2.2 HDi offering performancesuperior to that of the 407’s 2.7-litreV6. They’re all quiet, refined and more gutsythan you might expect. It feels like a mature, well sorted executiverather than something destined to be a taxi intwo years’ time and the driving experience isimpressively composed with quick and accuratesteering, feelsome brakes and a supplechassis that allows the driver to actually getsome enjoyment when behind the wheel. Inthe stop/start e-HDi the only transmission isbasically a clutch-less manual and this can takesome getting used to. For smooth changes, it’simportant to remember to back off the power asyou would in any manual otherwise it feels abit agricultural. So, all in all Peugeot appears to have awinner on its hands with the 508. It devouredhundreds of kms of Spanish roads with me atthe wheel and not once did I think about beingin something else. The RCZ was evidently not aone-off and this company has got its mojo backby tackling its problems at the most basic leveland starting again from the ground up. Timewill tell if their efforts have been a successbut, on the basis of my experiences in both thesaloon and the SW, I have a hunch that they’vecracked it at last.— from Car Advice19

20International Model newsNew 405s are even betterPeter WilsonIf you’re in the market for a new Peugeot 405, you’ll be pleased thatit’s had a host of improvements, including a more fuel efficient and morepowerful engine.Equipment on the new model includes front fog lamps, optimised enginemanagement system by Valeo, keyless entry, new reclining seats, new trunkrelease button, new style trim, front and rear clear light lenses and a rearspoiler, according to just-auto.com.The change to the 1,577 cc TU5 engine – also used on the Peugeot 206,207 and 307 – will boost power of the 405 SLX by 10 per cent and will meanready access to parts from Europe. But the 405 is not on Peugeot Automobiles Australia’s wishlist – theimporter has moved further along with the four-oh series, having the 4007 onsale and the 4008 on the way.Production of the Pininfarina-designed 405 is modest these days in comparisonwith other more popular Peugeot models. For instance, production ofthe 308 topped a million in September after four years. In the six months to September 22, the factories produced a total of 74,587units of the 405 as well as 107,776 units of two variants on the 405 platform. The Peugeot 405 was European car of the year when introduced in 1987and more than 2.5 million have been built. European production ended in1997.The 405 and some variations are built under licence by Iran Khodra, nowthe biggest auto maker in the Middle East, and its output of 860,000 vehiclesa year includes Suzuki Grant Vitara, Bardo utilities and Peugeot 206s as wellas its 405 and the 405-based Iranian national car, the Samand. The vehicles are sold in Iran and exported in the region, to Africa and toRussia. It also has factories in Egypt, Syria, Belarus, Senegal, Azerbaijan andVenezuela.Bomb on PugPeter WilsonThis shrouded earlyPeugeot 405 is being removedafter a classic assassination ina Iranian city street. Two men on a motorcycle rode byand attached a magnetic bomb to thecar of a university professor workingon a key nuclear facility, killing himand his driver on January 11.The slayings, near Iran’s keyenrichment site, suggest a wideningcovert effort to set back Iran’s atomicprogramme. The White House denied Americaninvolvement so it could have been anIsraeli hit.The lift equipment being used inthe recovery suggest there is an opportunityin Iran for someone to introducetray trucks to the towing business.Rennes plant to build508 hybridArange-topping diesel-electric version ofthe Peugeot 508 is due for launch laterin 2012.The 508 HYbrid4 was mentioned by PSAPeugeot Citroën in a briefing it sent to just-autoearlier on 12 January. The new variant is expected use the samepowertrain as that of the HYbrid4 versions ofthe Peugeot 3008 and 508 RX4, as well as theCitroën DS5.That means a 163bhp 2.0-litre turbodieselengine which drives the front wheels, plus anelectric motor which acts on the rear axle producingan additional 37bhp. The two propulsionsystems allow all-wheel drive operation. While the 508 HYbrid4 is to be manufacturedalongside the existing Peugeot 508, 508 SW and508 RX4 at the Rennes plant in France, themodular hybrid rear drive axle will be assembledand supplied from PSA’s Mulhouse facility.— from just-auto.com

Peter WilsonBarn findSo manywanted itIf you fancy having a Peugeot likeLieutenant Colombo, you’ll have to work onthe case quickly because there are others whoshare that dream. Our dedicated Peugeot sleuthsdetected a rare low mileage 403 cabrioleton ebay before Christmas. Its startingprice: a mere US$1,000.This white 1958 model with a blue leatherinterior was the real McCoy, not a home-builtchop-top. With 1,647 miles on the clock, it hadbeen barely used since leaving the showroom.“The car is most recognised as the carColombo drove in the TV detective seriesColombo,” European car restorer Ray Ayer saidin his ebay description. “This car is actually inabout the same condition!”Maybe not the same condition because thecar was fresh from a junkyard and, despite havingbeen cleaned, it showed rust blotches onmany parts of its exterior and inside its doors, its soft top was stuffed.Actually, the famous TV car looked muchbetter, despite the dents the studio had inflictedto make it shabby. The auction caused considerable excitementin the international Peugeot community and thelink was spread and discussed on several forums.Mike Tippett, the international 404 registrarfrom Vancouver Island, Canada estimateda 403 cabriolet was worth US$45,000 in topcondition. “It’s worth restoring for sure, especiallyfor someone who loves the cars,” hesaid. A Dutchman said he knew someone in theNetherlands who had restored a 403 convertiblethat he bought in Guadeloupe – “spent a fortuneon it and indeed it’s worth a lot of money”, hesaid, suggesting €50,000).As the talk was warming up and more peoplewere inspecting the photos on the auctionsite, the cabriolet was suddenly withdrawnfrom sale.Someone in France had made a killer offerto live the Colombo dream.Reiner Plass in Germany solved the mysteryof its disappearance a few days later: “The carwas sold directly. I got the information fromour 203/403 (German-speaking) forum that itis already on its way to Europe to be restoredthere.”As principal of Ayer European Auto, Rayhad run his eye very carefully over the dilapidatedFrench restoration prospect, recognisingit as “a stunningly beautiful automobile”.His firm is in Gardiner, Maine, a historicvalley citywhere thefirst workableUSsteam automobilewasmade. Itspecialisesin restoring European collectorcars and converting high lineimports to US regulation standards.Ray has restored Peugeot504s and 505s, and he thoughtworking on the 403 would befun, but the return would notbe as good as those from thePorsches and early Mercedes heusually revived. After some research on thecabriolets, which were built onthe sedan platform, and discovering therewere possibly only three examples survivingin the US, including the TV car, hedecided to sell it.Ray noted on ebay that the car was completein all aspects but conceded it had beenexposed to the weather for many years. His only clue to its history was that itturned up in a coastal resort town. All of these cars were outfitted withcomplete leather interiors and four speed onthe column shifters, he said.“The rockers are rusty but floors aresolid. All mechanical parts are availableas the model 403 was produced for manyyears and in many variations,” Ray said inhis sales talk.“Every part is here including the toolroll, engine manual crank, spare tyre etc. Wehave not tried to start the engine but it turnsover easily.”Then the phone started ringing.“You could almost say it went viral,” hetold The Pugilist from Maine. “It got a lotof interest. People from all over the worldcalled. I got calls from the US, a lot fromFrance, Switzerland, Canada …”“He knew the cabriolet was unusual, buthe did not expect the response he got.“There was this fellow in France whohad close contact with the Peugeot factoryand he asked if I would take it off ebay andsell it to him,” he said.Sebastien Waint from Beaune made anexceptional offer that Ray accepted.A contact already in Maine visitedGardiner the next day and paid for the car.A weekend later, the Peugeot was ina container and beginning its journey toFrance for restoration and appreciation.“You should have seen it when I got it,”Ray said of the 403.The cabriolet was recovered fromWickedville Road – what a marvellousname! – in Bar Harbor from the yard of analcoholic junkman who had no idea what itwas and could not remember where it hadcome from.Ray called in friends in the state policeto check its provenance. They reported thatit was last registered in 1978, but found noother information. He said it could have spent years in agarage at one of the many resort homesalong the coast before the junkman got it.To discover more, it might need anLAPD inspector with one eye, a shabbyraincoat, a cabriolet and considerable persistence.21

Ron Freestone: Still driving at 95 thePeugeot 403, his one and only car.ebay rings forhis sick 20322South African club member Hans Immelmanhas two Peugeot 203s, one in good conditionand usually on the road. But the good Pug washaving its engine overhauled and in desperateneed of a set of rings, especially oil rings, hetried emailing The Pugilist for help. His message arrived in the evening so weemailed the Goodwin brothers who have overhauledseveral club engines and with a Googlesearch found a set of new US old stock on ebayat US$35, or French sets for much more.In the morning the Goodwins suggested aSydney supplier, but by then Hans, after initialcaution, had bought the ebay rings. A coupleof weeks later, he reported, the American ringsarrived in the post from Turkey and he got onwith the job.Another tale from the helpful world ofPeugeot.

The Lions’RoarsRon, 94, still driving his Pug, 65It’s a trap when you pick up an old copy of The Pugilist; there’s usually something interestingto read as John Hunt discovered when looking through the October 2003 issue. The cover story was about Ron Freestone who was still driving his one and only car, a1956 Peugeot 403 sedan that cost him about £1,300 new.John sought an update. He thought Ron would be about 94 and he wondered if he wasstill driving the car. John has an uncle who lost his licence at 92 after being nabbed for drivingwell over the speed limit.Philip Challinor, who occasionally sees Ron on the road, saw him hurtling past in the 403through Hornsby towards Barker Corner just before Christmas.Philip reported: “The car had some rust repair work done at P504 on the rear end lowerspring mounts last year. (Peugeot didn’t supply new parts for 1956 403s, so Simon Brierleyfabricated new mountings on the lower A arms).“I seem to see him passing by every few weeks. Sometimes he catches the bus if he isgoing further than Hornsby.“He is very spritely for a ‘young bloke’.”Ron said he is now 95 and has a limited licence. That suits him because he drives aboutonce a week and only in the neighbourhood. And he has sighted Philip because he sometimes drives the local bus.Tough 505sThose Peugeot 505s are strong. We learntthat Victorian member John Walker and Melwalked away from one after a head-on, 100km/h crash while returning from a club eventback in August.Lael Lea came across the accident andstopped to direct traffic until police turned up.Specialists checked Mel in hospital andsaid apart from the bruising and torn musclesshe was ok.Rare TassietreasureBrian Arundale, who seems to have a neverendingstock of early Peugeot parts at his placein northern Tasmania, can’t help picking upanything interesting.Recently, he came across in his neighbourhoodthe front axle and two wire wheels from amysterious vintage Peugeot. He acquired them to identify them. Aftermeasuring everything, he decided they mustbe from a Type 159, a model made in smallnumbers in 1919-20 while the Beaulieu factorymade the transition to civilian production.Wide Open 203Viewers of the ABC’s Wide Open Roadmight have noticed a very brief glimpse ofa rally Peugeot 203 at the start of the firstepisode.Signage on the car read “John Crouch”, butthe driver and navigator were not immediatelyidentifiable.John Crouch drove 203 No. 37 in thefirst Redex Trial in 1953 and later owned acar dealership in Darlinghurst, selling Morris,Plymouth, Chrysler, Bristol and Cooper Bristolcars, according to Torque.Max ForsterSimon - thought you might like this shot.
