R.Martin’s first instalment in his epicfantasy series - A Song of Ice andFire has all that more. Set in thefictional continents of Westeros andEssos, the book starts off with anominous prologue whichestablishes supernatural beingscalled the Others as the real foes. The narrative then shifts to Bran, ason of Ned Stark, the lord of themighty castle Winterfell. The Starksrule the North in the name of Ned’schildhood friend, King RobertBaratheon who seized the IronThrone of Westeros by leading abloody rebellion and overthrowingthe ruling Targaryen dynasty.King Robert intends to make Nedhis Hand (similar to a primeminister) to help him rule the SevenKingdoms of Westeros. Thoughreluctant at first, Ned accepts onlyto protect his friend and preservepeace in the realm. This howeverputs him in direct confrontationwith the power hungry QueenCersei and her family, the ruthless, cunning and immensely wealthyLannisters. Across the Narrow Sea,in Essos, the last of the Targaryensforge an alliance with the warlordof the savage Dothraki nomads toattempt to reclaim the Iron Throne. The hostility between the Starks andLannisters pushes the realm to thebrink of a civil war even as thethreat of the Others looms large. The book draws parallels andinspiration from medieval historybut there are no direct analogues. The numerous characters are asdiverse as the regions they comefrom. The rich and brilliantlycrafted narrative is presented inlimited third person, with eachchapter delivered from the point ofview of one character with ninesuch point of view characters in all.As the story is also presented fromthe perspective of the supposedvillains, it becomes obvious thatthey aren’t truly ‘evil’. The heroestoo are not without faults andshortcomings. In fact, Martin’s magnum opus setsout to defy every convention, breakVOICE July '13 6every stereotype and dodge everytrope of not just fantasy but of allfiction. Important characters areunceremoniously killed off andeven children are not spared whichmakes the book incredibly grippingas the ‘good guys’ don’t necessarilywin or even survive for that matter. It is because of this vulnerability ofcharacters that the reader becomesemotionally involved. Instead of theinstitutionalized treatment of magicas in the Harry Potter series, magicand its influence is far more subtleand mysterious. Martin also doesnot shy away from exploringsexuality which he believes is anintrinsic part of the humanexperience and an important drivingforce. At close to seven hundred pages, 'AGame of Thrones' is a slightly longbut immensely satisfying read. It ismature, dark, and at times quiteviolent. If you do decide to read the books, there are three hazards that you mayhave to brave. One: Once you startreading you will find it incrediblydifficult to stop until you finish theremaining books of the series. Two:Once you finish reading the rest ofthe series, you will lose your mindwaiting for the release of the nextbook. And three: You will mostlikely find every other book/seriesflat, clinched and mediocre. Youhave been warned: Winter iscoming!byAnmol SarmaBelieve it or not !!! Sir Arthur C Clarke is the author of the novel ‘2001: A SpaceOdyssey’.The only details I knew beforewatching this movie were likethis: Les Misérables is a novel byFrench author Victor Hugo and ithas one of the longest sentencesin literature with 823 words. I wasalso told that it’s a singthroughmusical drama; it meansmore songs and fewer dialogues. It has a stellar cast with veteranslike Russell Crowe, HelenaBonham Carter, Hugh Jackman, and Anne Hathaway. The movie opens with prisoner24601 i.e., Jean Valjean (HughJackman) being released onparole after 20 years ofimprisonment for stealing breadfor his sister’s hungry child. Hesteals again but he is changedforever by a genial Bishop. Toredeem his life, he jumps paroleand turns into Madeleine, a mayorand successful entrepreneurrenowned for kindness. Javert(Russell Crowe), who worked asa prison guard when Valjean wasin prison comes to the city as aPolice officer. He realizes the realidentity of mayor and vows to puthim behind the bars. From here itis a cat and mouse game until thevery end. The lives of poor inBanana, John’s next productionToday, when filmmakers are vying to grab the audience attention with overtly exuberantfilms and film names, actor-producer John Abraham seems to take the cake. Apparently,John is all set with his next production venture which will be titled, believe it or not,Banana.Paris are shown in vivid detail. Weget to know Fantine, who works atthe firm owned by the mayor, butloses the job due to meddlesomeco-workers. Valjean feels guiltyabout this and takes up the job ofsaving her child Cosette as Fantineis about to die. He rescues her fromThénardiers, who exploit citizensentering their tavern. After 10years, Cosette, a studentrevolutionary Marius, and a poorstreet thief Eponine get entangledin love triangle. The latter part ofstory is all about how thesecharacters get embroiled in the JuneRebellion and how the human spiritsurvives over law, prejudices, andother barriers. It’s hard to miss certain aspects ofthe movie: the courage ofGavroche, the beauty and squalorof 19 th century Paris, Valjean’stransformation, Eponine’s sacrifice, the raw and naturalistic singingclubbed with remarkable acting, and a brilliant background score.Hathaway as Fantine gives her allduring the rendition of ‘I dreameda dream’; this even took all thesuspense out of Academy Award forBest Supporting Actress. Themovie it is raw, unfiltered, and fullof emotions.Bottom Line: Even if you’venever been to a musical before, chances are that you come out ofthe theatre singing ; ‘Do you hearthe people sing?’ or ‘At the end ofthe day’.by PrasannaMunukuntlaDr. D.S. Hello friends !Alumni NewsHope you all are fine and by God’sgrace doing well. I’m ReshmaPattan, who graduated in 2012 asa Mechanical Engineer. I’mcurrently working in CumminsTechnologies India Ltd as aProduct Design Engineer-Associate.My work involves designing“After Treatment Devices” fordiesel engines. I think at collegelevel, most of us don’t know aboutit. As a mechanical engineer weonly study about engines and theircombustion process. This studycomes into picture next to theprocess. It is applied to treat theexhaust gas before releasing it intothe atmosphere to reduce pollution. This is an emerging business andis driven by continuously upgradedemission norms. Each day starts with a new problemand ends with a new solution.Coming to experience, I am gladto share this with you all. I’d neverforget the day I entered Pune, andthe grand welcome given byCummins. I had a great time thereat the induction training. Duringinduction training they explainedabout Cummins, its vision, mission, goals etc. It helped us understandthe way we should work. After thatwe were taken to our actual workplace. Once again, it was inductionTraining about CRTI (CumminsResearch and Technology India)and Pro-E Training. First onemonth, I felt like I was in college, learning what after treatmentdevice is and its functioning and all.I started my work as DesignEngineer when I had no knowledgeabout the Pro-E software. I learntit with the help of seniors and nowI am able to manage myself indoing modelling and drafting.Industry or work place gives a goodopportunity to learn new things sowe can improve and updateourselves. In the corporate sector we will beexposed to a lot of diversity. Wehave to collectively work withpeople from different backgrounds, different languages and of coursefrom different states and countriesalso. It is a good opportunity forglobal exposure. It took a little timefor me to adjust myself to thiscorporate life. I felt very excitedwhen I could see the practicalapplication of all the theories whichI had learnt in books through mycourse.Hi... Vignites, I am Ganesh Shankar of 2008 batch.Choosing Vignan was one of thegood decisions that I had taken inmy life. I am not very clever andintelligent but GATE knowledge, aptitude and a little bit confidenceare the reasons I got this job. I justwant to tell one thing to myjuniors, get some basic coreknowledge and build youraptitude. Spend time in librarywisely during the course of fouryears and get some goodpercentage and knowledge aswell. Enough! Right now I amunhappy to see my juniors whohad paid lakhs and achievednothing. I would frankly say that, even i don’t know the rightreason for that. Now I am working in DRDOMy suggestion to all of you isplease learn basics and try to applythem practically. Update yourselfby reading books, newspapers andalso through the internet. This isthe one place where you can learnon your own whatever you wantI also learned Pro-E basicsthrough Internet. And it’s the tough time for all finalyear students, attendinginterviews and preparing forsemester exams. Congratulationsto all those who already got thejobs. And to those who aren’tplaced yet, I suggest you, not tolose your hope always, rememberone thing: if you miss anopportunity better one is alwayswaiting for you and you have toput all your efforts to seize it.Finally I would like to say true, getting into a job is easy butsustaining the job is different, lotsof dedication and hard work arerequired. Whatever the job it maybe you must learn to enjoy it, learnfrom it.Thanks to Vignan!“Dream every day andwork for that dream, onefine morning you will getsuccess.”All the best for your future.with scientists. Engineeringknowledge is just a base, we haveto start from the beginning.Knowledge needed by theindustry is far more advancedthan what we acquire on thecampus. Learn the latest softwareregarding your core branchbecause the industry is workingwith software.VOICE July '13 12Letters tothe Editor...DearVoice Team,I would like to congratulate allthe editors for making 'Voiceof Vignan', a fascinatingMagazine. Advertising aboutthe coaching centres for GRE,CAT, GATE etc, in themagazine is very informativeand useful. I like the ‘Careercounsel’ column the most, as itgives the additionalinformation required for thestudents to shape up theircareer. Publishing anddistribution of the magazine isnot prompt. Publishing themagazine regularly should goa long way, in enhancing theknowledge of students as wellas the reputation of “VOICE”.by T. Sunayana, III ECEContribution ofarticles arewelcome atvoiceofvignan@gmail.comFor mechanical engineers, Iwould suggest you to learn designsoftware on solid works or Catia, analysis software. This is what theindustry expects in addition toB.Tech qualification. With this weare sure to get a head start in ourcareer. As corresponded toAditya, IV MechCharacter is like a tree and reputation like a shadow.
