Howdo a husband and wife learn to communicate ifthey sit and watch television? It would be betterfor a couple to sit on a sofa and hold hands andlook into each other’s beautiful eyes and simplysay, “Honey, I think you’re the sweetest person.”At least that would get a reaction, and itwouldn’t be the TV causing it. You see, you’vegot to have time to talk. You need to have time torelate to one another.Another dimension that needs to be emphasizedin a Christian marriage is the awareness ofeach other’s presence, knowing that the otherperson is nearby. Sometimes the husband isaware that the wife is in the kitchen while he’s inthe garage. Just to be aware of her presence givesa husband pleasure. It’s just the knowledge thatthe other is nearby. That’s why a husband can’tcall “the boys” every night and say, “Hey,George, let’s go bowling.” Tomorrow night,“Hey, Herman, let’s go bowling.” When you getmarried, you aren’t marrying the fellows you’vebeen bowling with. In a Christian family youmarried your spouse, and you should spend timebuilding and maintaining that relationship.46Genesis 2:24 says, “Therefore shall a manHeirs Together of the Grace of LifeSomebody said that marriage would be mucheasier if it were like the old wagon—just onetongue. A husband and wife can’t becomeone flesh and be molded together unless they wantto be and unless they spend time achieving it.Genesis 2:24 says that a man is to leave fatherand mother. So, Dad and Mom, let him go! Youmanaged when you got married. Maybe your sonand his bride can manage, too, if you don’t putpressure on their relationship.When a man and a woman get married, theyought to move out of Dad and Mom’s house. Tolive with the parents and to work out of theparents’ home is not the Biblical way of marriage.A married man and woman have a right tomake their own life and their own decisions and47
