P W U N U R S I N G A L U M N I N E W S L E T T E RTHE EVENT: MS. NURSING 2013Ms. Nursing 2013 was easily crowned as theevent of the year. It definitely brought solidarityand a sense of unison to the school of Nursing.During the planning, organizing andpreparation of the event, students from eachyear spent a good amount of time getting toknow each other, as well as being able to formnew friendships. However, Ms. Nursing wasn’t alljust fun and games, it took sleepless nights anddays for both Executive Committee membersand of coursethe contestants.Thepageantconsists of tencontestants, fourfrom the thirdyear batch, fourfrom the secondyear, and twofrom the firstyear. The eventwas split intofour portions; aphoto shoot, thetalenttheprepageant, portion, andthe official Ms.Nursing pageant night.THE TEN CANDIDATES OF MS. NURSINGTOP ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): HANNAH, JANE, ANDREA, ROWELYN, DWIASTI; BOTTOM ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): HELEN, DENISE,GIA, KAT, JOYCEEach batch were required to select andvote in a batch mate they believed were mosteligible and qualified to become the next Ms.”A FORMAL GOWN; ANDNOT JUST ANY GOWN, IT HAD TOHAVE AN ENVIRONMENTAL TWIST,MEANING AT LEAST 80 PERCENT OFTHE GOWN HADTO BE ECO-FRIENDLY; MADE WITHTHE HELP OF THEIR BATCH MATESAND CLINICAL GROUPS.”Nursing. Chosen were none other than; Jane,Denise, Kat, and Dwiasti from the third year;Joyce, Rowelyn, Gia, and Hannah from secondyear; Helen and Andrea from first year.3

P W U N U R S I N G A L U M N I N E W S L E T T E RThe ten contestants were responsible to preparea talent portion, five different outfits/looks, andof course their best model faces for the photoshootas well as their queenly walks for the prepageant. The five different outfits/ looks wereblue jeans & white shirt, standard schooluniform, sportswear, smart- 80 percent of thegown had to be eco-friendly, made with thehelp of their batch mates or clinical groups. Thefirst portion of event was the Ms. NursingPictorial. The contestants were photographedas a group, and then divided into the differentyear levels, and individual solos. They wererequired to wear the blue jeans & white shirtlook, inspired by the cover of vogue magazinewhich portrayed that “simplicity is beauty”. Thephotographer and make-up artist was BeaTemporal, the set up and creative directing wasby Heidee Javonillo and Princess Roa.The second portion of the event was theTalent portion, which was held in Seminar Roomtwo. The ten contestants were able toshowcase their talents to the four judges outsideof the nursing department. The talents rangedfrom piano recital and multiple dance numbersthat consists of different styles of dance. Thedifferent dance styles included, hip hop, interpretive dances, traditional dances, and soon. Results of the talent portion were given atthe Ms. Nursing Pageant night, keeping the tencontestants on their toes anxiously awaiting theresults. The third portion of the event was thePre-Pageant, which was divided into twonights. The first night was held in Seminar Room2, where the contestants practiced their fiercestwalks and model poses. The second night washeld at the actual venue, CB Hall, where thecontestants practiced dress rehearsal, introductions, and pretty much everything elseyou can think of.And then the moment of truth finallycame: the night of the pageant. Thecandidates graced the audience with theirplain white-tees and blue jeans. Soon after that, they wore their best standard uniforms. Theirstrut and the way they carried themselves werethe main criteria. The sports attire competitioncame next. The candidate who wore thecomplete, accurate outfit of her chosen sportswon the title. Kat David from the fourth yearclaimed the spot with her knockoutequestrienne ensemble. One of the mostanticipated portions was the environmentalgown competition. The winning piece was wornby Rowelyn Buluran from the third year. Hergown was made from glued and paintedgarbage bags that were ingeniouslyaccentuated with aluminum foil crumpled bits. The outcome: a runway-ready gorgeouslystunning piece. And of course, every pageant wouldn’t becomplete without the nerve-wrecking questionand answer portion. The event had two roundsof Q & A. The first round was designed to narrowdown the contestants into half. Here, the pointsaccumulated by the candidates from theprevious portions of the event were added totheir total score. For the second round ofquestions, the scores were back to zero. Duringthis part, they were allowed to choose which ofthe judges whom they would like to provide thequestion. All the questions were indeedchallenging but the candidates rightfullyproved that PWU nurses are both beauty andbrains. But just like any competition, there has tobe a winner. In the end, Andrea Aguirre fromthe first year triumphed in the competition andwas crowned as this year’s Ms. Nursing4

DIt was a rainy Thursday afternoon whenme and my classmate Lafayette head-off to PLMto interview Dean Rodolfo. We learned about hernumerous achievements beforehand. Andalthough quite-soaked from the outside pour, ouramazement to the outstanding alumna wasundeniably evident. So we immediatelyproceeded to PLM’s Nursing office. The jolly auraof the young Dean was very warm andwelcoming. She instantly accommodated us intoher office.Obviously you have a lot of accomplishments at ayoung age. Growing up, have you always dreamed ofhaving this position?PWU BSN BATCH 1995No. I am not really after any position. I alwaysdeemed my designation as the Dean of the Collegeof Nursing as actually a mission for me to fulfill.Because I really love the academe and I really loveteaching. I know that is one of my missions in life, to“Well, it’s is importantthat you go back to yourroots. Sino ba talaga yungnagturo sa atin, yung nagmoldsa atin. PWU Nursing Alumni Newsletterteach. So I teach from the heart and I’m reallyblessed that God gave me this opportunity toserve the college as the overall head of this, thecollege of nursing.Have you thought of taking up Medicine like yourfather? No. You know, ang pinaka-reason ko diyan ay kasidi ko kaya ang puyatan. Pag doctor ka, angtendency diyan, usually, puyat ka diba? Imagine,How about being a nurse, ma’am? When you werea child, did you see yourself as a nurse? No. Honestly, I have a calling. I really want to be anun. Ever since I was in elementary and highschool, I have friends who are actually nuns. And2 days ka halos walang tulog. Hindi ko kayangganun. Kaya hindi ako nag-medicine. But, in short,na doctor rin ako, Doctor of Philosophy. And at thispoint, I have also plans of pursuing my doctor ofeducation here in this university.they really encouraged me to pursue thisvocation. And at thisSince alumna po kayo ngpoint in my life, I am alsodiscerning whether tocontinue on with thisvocation or not. So,undecided pa if I willreally enter acongregation, or I willjust serve outsideteaching.Bakit po yun yung naisipniyo, considering na“What’s important isthat we always giveour best to our everyendeavor. And youserve with the heart.”PWU, bakit po sa PWU?What made you choosePWU over other schools?Well, I always believedthat PWU is one of thehighlyregardeduniversities in the country;we all know that. For howmany years din inexistence ang Womens. And not only that, yungating mga clinical— mgahindi po niyo naisip nung bata kayo na magiging affiliated institutions? Lahat specialized; that is whynurse kayo?I enrolled in Quezon City. Kasi lahat yan: sa heartKasi my mom is a nurse. She was a nurse. Actually center, sa lung center, sa orthopedic. And Inasa heaven na siya ngayon. She’s one of my believe it really molded me to be very competentgreatest mentors. And I’ve seen her dedication, with regards to the clinical aspect. That is whyher commitment on how she really imparts all the when I was assigned at PGH, talagang I was ablenecessary service to people. And my father is a to practice everything, to apply everything. All thedoctor. So I grew up in the hospital, playing learnings I gained from PWU. That’s how much Iaround. Alam niyo yung playground ko yung really— I’m so grateful. I am so thankful na I hadhospitals, mga various areas. Siguro that’s one my schooling sa Womens.major influence why I took up nursing.6

PWU Nursing Alumni NewsletterNakita nga rin po naming na nag-work po kayo saFabella and sa Manila Health Department.Yes. I started at the Manila Health Department.Nag-start muna ako sa community because mymom was a community health nurse. And then Iwas also assigned--I had my training as a nursemidwifeat Fabella Hospital. And then I was alsodeployed at Ospital ng Maynila. And then wehave Philippine General Hospital. Pero honestly, ang pinaka-love ko talaga overall, sa PGH. Kasidiyan lalong na-enhance ang skills ko atcapabilities ko.Going back ma’am, after graduating from PWU,how was the choosing of your career path?Well, definitely, after I graduated, I ensured that Ineed to practice my profession. So I had mytraining in a military and then in a privateinstitution, private hospital. I was also invited as apart-time clinical instructor when I was deployed inthat private institution. So I came to love teaching. So I decided to resign in the clinical aspect, andthen I teach here at PLM. Kasi talagang masarapturuan ang PLM students. They all have potentials, you just need to develop their potentials. Sincethen, di na ako umalis. I’ve been here for 15 yearsalready.Di ba po you chose teaching over clinicals? Anopo yung nakita niyo sa pagtuturo na hindi niyo ponakita or naranasan sa clinical practice?Well, before you can teach, it is very importantthat you have the experience, diba. Clinicalexpertise and knowledge combined is veryessential before you teach in the academe. Sowhatever learnings you’ve gained in your clinicalexperience, you can apply it when you teach. And you can always update yourself of the latesttrends, because when you’re in the academe, you have to make sure that you are at least 10books ahead of your students. Hindi pwede namagka-level lang kayo, na ito lang ang referenceniyo, pareho kayo. But you have to do research, and I love research. Na-love ko ang researchbecause of Ma’am Arugay, who’s now a memberof the Board of Nursing. She was my professor inresearch. So I was really motivated by her to reallypursue research, and that’s why until now I amresearch oriented. And I ensure na lagingupdated. And I do board review. Nagcoconductako ng review. So I always attend trainings fromthe DOH. So na-update ako sa mga latestprograms. And I share it with my students. Kayaang tawag nila sakin dito “Ma’am Update.”Walang biro yun. Kasi alam nila pag may bagonang program—they always ask me: “Ma’am anopo ba yung program dito? Yung regimen? Yungmga treatment?” I can always share them— kungano yung mga updates. Because it is ourresponsibility when we teach; kailangan paratitayong eager to learn, diba. You just don’t stopthere. When we teach, dapat you learn as well.As a nursing graduate—with the status of Nursing inthe Philippines right now: It is not as in demand asit was before. As a dean of this school, were thereany steps that you have made to ignite that back? How to address? Actually, that is a major concernin all nursing schools: how can you deal with thedecline with the number of enrollees. In all nursingschools actually, I’m sure even sa Women’s, noh?And let’s face it. That’s one of the trends, eh.Ganun talaga.

PWU Nursing Alumni Newsletter“You know, for you toreally look young, youhave to view thingspositively. Be very positivein your outlook in life.”doctor. So yun ang malungkot lang: how can weaddress this? Pero since we do have anoversupply of nurses right now, siguro what wereally need—what the government needs toaddress is the plantilla position for all the nurses, diba? And for the nursing schools, well, sincekaunti ang enrollees nila at the moment, well, theycan venture into other programs. Para at least maaddressdin—na ma-maintain pa rin nila na meronpa ring student, may program pa rin na maiooffersa university program nila sa kanilang mgaschools. And we are also in the process ofpreparing—well, siyempre I can never disclose it.But we have plans also on how to address the fewmembers of enrollees we have right now in ourcollege. It cannot be denied that there will be students whotook up nursing as a pre-med course. Do youencourage them to just pursue nursing?Well, honestly, the best pre-med course is nursing.Kaya when students tell me, when graduates tellme, “Ma’am, magme-Medicine ako”, ang sagotko, “That’s good!” Because isa lang naman angaim natin, diba; Be it medicine or nursing, we justreally want to serve, we want to help people. Soit’s the same vocation in a way, kaya lang nag-ibayung perpective kasi iba yung work, but we areworking close hand with the doctors. So, there’snothing wrong with that. How does it feel po to have all theseachievements? You even co-authored a bookabout community health nursing.Yes. One of my expertise actually is communityhealth nursing. And I am also thankful to DeanPitpitan who was my professor at that time, because she was very active in the community, outreach, service; and at that time, I was alsoactive in volunteering myself in activities, samedical missions. Go! Go ako diyan. Kasi I enjoyhelping people.Ano po yung feeling na as a nurse maynaaachieve po kayo?Sa totoo lang di kasi ako mayabang na tao eh. Iam still grounded. Kahit na yung position kongayon? Hindi ko siya hinahayaan mag-dominatesa ulo ko. Kung baga it’s just a designation ormission. Kaya every time I achieve something, Ialways thank God for the blessing; becausedefinitely we can never achieve what we have inlife without His grace. And He always gives us whatis best for us; He has a good plan for us. So everytime I achieve something, I say, “Thank you, God,for the blessing. Ano kaya ang next mission Mopara sa akin?”So then, “Nursing is a continuous mission?”Yes. Whatever field we are, be it in the clinical, inthe community, in the academe; there are variousfields in nursing; we all know that. What’s importantis that we always give our best to our everyendeavor. And you serve with the heart. Yungessence natin sa nursing diba? The cor, which isthe heart; the manus, which is the hand; and thecaput, which is the head, in the nursing profession.8

PWU Nursing Alumni NewsletterSo whatever field you are, do not forget tointegrate these three. And the most important thatwe must never forget is the cor, the heart. So giveyour best for God’s glory.Do you think the Cor is what somewhatdistinguishes nurses from the other professions?Yes. The most important aspect in our life, not onlybeing a nurse, but also as a person is the heart. You can be very intelligent, but if you don’t havethe heart, you don’t know how to serve, it’suseless. Diba sabi nga nila—pero yung mgamultiple intelligence, yung in all aspects, diba 5yan? Meron tayong IQ, meron tayong EQ, merontayong PQ; pero alam mo ang pinaka-importantesa lahat ng iyan? Yung spiritual aspect. Becausewhen you have God in your life, you can never gowrong. Whatever decision you are about toundertake in your life, you know you are doing theright thing; because God will always guide you todo the right thing. It’s kind of an out of a topic question, but youreally look younger po than we expected.Actually yes, a lot of people tell me I really lookyoung. Actually yung mga naging students kobefore na co-faculty ko na ngayon? Sabi nila,“Ma’am, di ka tumanda.” You know, for you toreally look young, you have to view thingspositively. Be very positive in your outlook in life. And my biggest secret why I am always happy, why I am always smiling, is because I have God inmy life. I am always guided by Him. When youhave him in your life, He is in control of everything;you have nothing to worry. Kahit anong challengeor trials yan—especially pag nasa admin ka,madaming stress, nakaka-wrinkle yan—iyan nganagkaroon na ako kaunti. At least you will be atpeace pa din. Kasi you know that God is in controlof everything; that He is taking care of everything. That’s my biggest secret. Sabi nga nila, cool langako! How does it feel to be interviewed by people fromyour own Alma matter to be featured in the firstissue of the revived alumni paper?Well, I had interviews from other schools so oknaman. But knowing na galling sa Women’s angpupunta ngayon, no matter how busy I am, I amhere to find time for you. Kasi you will be mycolleagues—my future colleagues in the nursingprofession. And I am looking forward to that.Ano pong subject ang tinuturo niyo?Well, ang favorite nilang ibigay sakin siyempreCommunity Health Nursing. But I teach othersubjects also, like anatomy, physiology, MCN,communicable disease, psychiatric. Pero laginilang binibigay sakin CHN kasi pinakamahirapyun, dahil kang naguupdate.Lastly ma’am, ano pong message niyo sa mgaalumni? This interview is actually for the revival ofthe alumni paper, and you were chosen to be thefirst alumni to be featured. Kaya po mababasa poito ng alumni here and abroad.Message for my fellow alumni? Well, it’s importantthat you go back to your roots. Sino ba talagayung nagturo sa atin, yung nag-mold sa atin.Because I believe that personally, who I am todayis because I had good mentors way back saWomen’s. I was so blessed that all my professorsare very loving and very supportive. Strict sila;disciplinarian sila. Pero nakatulong yun ng malakias to who I am today. Yung mga positive, yungmga negative; I take everything as a goodlearning experience for me. And I apply them as ateacher now, and in the academe. And we must9

PWU Nursing Alumni Newsletteralways be grateful to our Alma matter. And wehave to be very proud that we are a graduate ofPhilippine Women’s University. So we have to doour share; we have to go back.
