We have struggled personally as we workthrough the financial decisions that will guide our future through these unsettled financialtimes, and professionally as we work through the tough decisions that will guide ourcompanies through these unsettled economic times. Yet, there are some indications that theeconomy is beginning to look up once again!Sometimes we need to take a deep breath and step back to renew ourselves and reset thestress meters so we can stay equipped for the tests still to come. Travel deals abound thisyear, so do your part to move money around the economy and take a vacation! Find a wayto have a new experience. Travelling or even experiencing something new in your ownbackyard can give you renewed energy and stamina to deal with the day-to-day challengeswe are facing. The Tempe Chamber is taking a couple of great trips this fall. If you can manage to get away, join us for a new trip to China or spend some time relaxing with us under the warm Tuscansun in Italy. If a big trip isn’t on your agenda this year, take a look around at the wonderfulvenues and experiences that are available right here in our own community.A weekend getaway to one of our local hotels (who all have great summer rates) with a dayat the lake, an evening at Gammage and Sunday brunch at the Top of the Rock will reallygive you a chance to rejuvenate! How about championship golf, great hiking and a fabuloussteak at Monti’s? Our community is rich with opportunity, and now is a great time to assesyour stress level and find some great activities to change it up and give you a new start. It’ssummer vacation - time to play!It seems hard to believe that the Chamber is almost through another fiscal year. Next monthnew officers will take over on our Board of Directors and we will begin a new fiscal year. Iwould be remiss if I did not express my appreciation for the opportunity I have had this yearin serving as your Chairman. I have learned a great deal and will leave this position far richerfor the associations I have gained and the friends I have made. It has been a steep learningcurve and I appreciate the patience and support I have had from all of you as members.I must conclude this with my most sincere thanks and appreciation for the staff membersat the Chamber. They are a fabulous team and are serving all of us well. They have workedtirelessly to cut operating costs, bring new ideas to the table, and execute their jobs asefficiently as possible. My hat is off to this great team! Thanks and have a wonderful summer!Warmest Regards,Marilyn JoyceChairmanTempe Chamber of Commerce2June 2009 : Business Advocate

SCF SAFETYWatch Your Step around TrenchesExcavation and trenching are among the most hazardous constructionoperations. Cave-ins pose the greatest risk, but other hazards include fallsand falling loads or equipment. Soil composition, gravity and the law ofphysics combine in a manner that will ensure that all trenches eventuallywill collapse. Safety tips include:• Keep heavy equipment away from trench edges• Keep surcharge loads at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) from trench edges• Know where underground utilities are located• Test for low oxygen, hazardous fumes and toxic gases• Inspect trenches at the start of each shift• Inspect trenches following a rainstorm• Do not work under raised loadsTrench safety lies in the careful preparation of the worksite and testingthe soil. Any trench that is five feet deep or deeper requires a protectivesystem, unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock. Trenchesdeeper than 20 feet deep require a protective system designed or basedon data prepared by a professional engineer.Workers can educate themselves about trench safety and request anassessment if work conditions appear to be unsafe. To maintain safetywhile working in and around a trench, follow OSHA guidelines, monitorthe soil conditions and use appropriate shoring or sloping methods.Provided by Tod Dennis, Association Coordinator. For more information on workplace safety please contact your SCFAssociation Coordinator.BOOTS FOR TROOPS PROGRAM RETURNS TO ARIZONAThe Tempe Chamber of Commerce and its Military Affairs Committee are lending supportto the locally founded Tempe Veterans Foundation and its “Boots For Our Troops” program.Through the program, businesses and retail outlets have the opportunity to supportArizona’s veterans, military personnel and their families. The “Boots for Our Troops” program provides participating retail stores, hospitality outlets, and other businesses with combat boot-shaped cut outs.
