VITASusanne Elizabeth Shawyer was born in London, Ontario, Canada. In 1993 sheentered Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, andin 1994 she began studying at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Shereceived the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University in May 1997. Duringthe following year she was employed as a lecturer in the Department of Germanic Studies(now the Department of English) at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 1998 shereturned to Canada where she taught theatre at Dalhousie University and at Mount SaintVincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In August 2000 she entered the GraduateSchool of the University of Texas.
