Hidden just off the busy Old Mill Lane next to ASDA,
we offer two changing guest beers from local micro
breweries in top quality condition. The nautical theme
of the pub reminds visitors of its location next to the
now hidden remnants of the Aire and Calder
Navigation canal which closed in the 1950’s.
Within the pub are drinking areas of various sizes,
from the lounge to the small conservatory snug. Our
function room is available for parties and meetings,
and has a large screen TV.
WELCOME to the Barnsley Beer Festival. I hope
you enjoy the wonderful selection of real ales on
offer over the weekend – a mix of time honoured
favourites and special festival ales.
I am once again indebted to our main sponsor
Acorn Brewery of Barnsley.
While you’re choosing your beers and ciders, and
having a great time out with friends please think
about making a donation to our charity, Barnsley
Domestic Violence Group or PATHWAYS as they
are known. In the words of Pathways patron Ian
McMillan “Domestic Violence isn’t a headlinegrabber.
It’s not a natural disaster, it’s not a
famine or an earthquake. And yet, in some ways,
it is. It’s an unnatural disaster. It’s a famine of
feeling, where people are hungry for love or a kind word, and it’s an earthquake of
terror in a house down your street, across your road.” So please consider dropping
any cash or unused tokens into the collection boxes… Thank You
Everyone working at the festival here today is an unpaid volunteer. They are all
CAMRA members who volunteer their time free of charge because they love real ale
and are keen to promote it. Staff do get a small beer allowance but they only work at
the event for the love of it! So please be patient at busy times, we will get to serve
you.
And finally, The consumption of alcohol may make you think that you are whispering
when you are not. So please bear this in mind when you are leaving the festival, the
neighbours may think you are loud and not actually whispering, and they could
possibly be right.
Do you think it's right that...
26 pubs are closing every month?
8 out of 10 pints served contain less than 100% liquid?
Of course you don’t and neither do we. If you want to find out more about your favourite real ales,
campaign for greater consumer choice as well as helping to safeguard the future of British beer and
pubs, then look no further - join CAMRA, the campaign for real ale today.
It takes all sorts to campaign for real ale. In September 2006 we had around 84,000 members, 240 in the
Barnsley area – but we still need your help. Our members are of all ages and interests who, above all,
enjoy celebrating their favourite product – real ale.
As a member you will enjoy:
Membership of your local CAMRA group.
• Subscription to our hard hitting Monthly Newspaper, What’s Brewing, with news about beer and
brewing as well as information about the 140 + festivals we run a year.
• Subscription to The BAR, the Barnsley CAMRA bi-monthly newsletter full of local news and
events.
• Free or reduced entry to all CAMRA beer festivals.
• Access to the members only section of the website. Which includes “special offers” exclusive to
CAMRA members.
If you are reading this any time after
Thursday evening, you may notice that we
have held a competition for the Champion
Beer of the Festival.
The judging takes place on Thursday evening
when a selection of invited guests give
evaluate the beers on offer. All the beers are
numbered and judged anonymously. They
are grouped with other beers of their kind
when possible. The judges taste groups of
beers and where one team might have bitters
to judge, another team could be trying strong
ales. Marks are awarded for taste, condition,
clarity and aroma, and the winner of each
section goes forward to the final. Any ties in
marks are resolved by a vote between the
team members.
At all times the identity of the beers is kept
secret until all the winners are decided. Then
the tasting panels find out the names of their
particular favourites at the same time as
Thursday night customers.
Once the winners are announced there is
always a rush to try them. It would be nice to
be able to predict the winner so we could
order more casks, but alas it is not possible!
Last years Gold and Silver award winners
have made it back this year, the 2005 Gold
Winner was Acorn Old Moor Porter and
Silver Award Winner was H.B.Clarks Classic
