The idea of providing a scienti�c basis for discussing and solving emerging environmental 

problems in agro-industries such as textile, pulp and paper, leather, food, sugar, edible oil, 

beverage, etc. �ourished in the eighties. This idea initiated "the First International Symposium 

on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries" held in İstanbul, Turkey, in 1989. The wide 

interest and high quality contribution of participating scientists established a series of IAWQ 

symposia, with the second event in İstanbul again, in 1992, the third in Mexico City, Mexico, in 

1995 and the fourth in İstanbul, in 1998. The �fth international symposium was held in Shiga, 

Japan, in 2001. The sixth IWA specialty symposium was organized in Seoul, Korea in 2003, 

primarily addressing "Strong Nitrogenous and Agro Wastewater". "The Seventh International 

IWA Symposium on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries" was held in Amsterdam, 

the Netherlands in 2006. AGRO’ 2011 that is going to be held in Ilıca, Çeşme, İzmir, is the eighth 

of this series of regular scienti�c events organized under the same umbrella. This symposium 

is jointly organized by the Turkish National Committee on Water Pollution Research and 

Control (SKATMK) and the International Water Association (IWA). AGRO’2011 is partly 

sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Turkish Republic. 

This International Symposium Series is designed to initiate discussions, paper and poster 

presentations in two areas that are of global signi�cance. First of these involves “Waste 

Management” covering physical, chemical and biological treatment of wastewater and waste 

sludge, with special emphasis on advanced treatment processes and innovative technological 

applications, whereas the second one is concerned with “Agro-Industries” focusing on 

water-intensive food processing industries and related sectors. The symposium features a total 

of 73 oral and 46 poster contributions that will be presented in 17 Scienti�c Sessions. 

Ilıca is selected as the symposium venue since it has the �nest beach of Aegean coastline of 

Turkey, about 1.5 km long, as well as favorable wind conditions which make it a prized location 

for windsur�ng in the world. It is also famed for its thermal springs, which is the very meaning 

of its name. Owing to these prominent features of the place participants will enjoy their stay 

besides bene�ting from the sysmposium. 

The three-day AGRO’2011 Symposium that is going to be launched on June 22 in Çeşme, İzmir, 

Turkey, provides a fruitful, international and unique forum for exchange of views among 

researchers currently working in the area of agro-industrial waste management and for 

establishing future management and research strategies in this �eld.

A technical o�ce near the presentation rooms will be available for use by the platform 

presenters. Each platform presenter will have 15 minutes for his/her presentation and 5 

minutes for discussions. 

Poster Presentations 

Poster should be prepared with the following dimensions: 80 cm width and 120 cm height 

(maximum size). 

The poster presenters are kindly requested to stand in front of their own posters during the 

poster sessions to answer arising questions. The posters should be withdrawn by the 

presenters at 14:00, on June 24, 2011. 

Publication Information 

A preprint including full text of selected papers and posters to be presented will be handed 

over to the participants at the registration. After the symposium, a selected number of papers 

and posters will be reviewed for publication in the IWA journals "Water Science and 

Technology", "Water Science and Technology: Water Supply" and in "Environmental 

Technology".

Çeşme is located in the still undiscovered and avantgarde part of 

Turkey’s spectacular coastline of Aegean at the Western end of the 

İzmir Peninsula. The name Çeşme means fountain and possibly 

draws reference from the many Ottoman fountains scattered across 

the city. Another brand name of the district which rings a bell in the 

Turkish mind once the name Çeşme is pronounced is mastic. Çeşme
