<strong>Pickles</strong>’ collar with medalsDave and <strong>Pickles</strong> werehonoured guests at the post-Final reception at the RoyalGarden Hotel in Kensing<strong>to</strong>nwhere ecstatic crowds no<strong>to</strong>nly cheered their belovedteam but also Dave and<strong>Pickles</strong> for their part in thesuccess of the <strong>to</strong>urnament.<strong>Pickles</strong> was awarded manymedals for his enterprisingsnout: the National CanineDefence League’s SilverMedal, the World CupCollec<strong>to</strong>rs Club medal andone from the Italian CanineDefence League.<strong>Pickles</strong> would proudly wearsome of his medals on hiscollar for many years and,along with all he could eat,stardom beckoned when hewas offered a role in the film,The Spy With The ColdNose. Written by AlanSimpson and Ray Gal<strong>to</strong>n(Step<strong>to</strong>e & Son), the film hada stellar British castincluding: Laurence Harvey,Lionel Jeffries, JuneWhitfiled, Eric Sykes andDenholm Elliot. Theproduction company had avery enterprising publicistwho thought <strong>Pickles</strong>’presence would be a goodidea <strong>to</strong> help publicise the film– and it was!Little is known of <strong>Pickles</strong>’other cinematic exploits, butmost likely bemused by allthe attention, this nationalhero just got on with doingwhat dogs like best until, inthe early 70s, he died:choking on his own collarwhilst chasing a cat up atree.After the events of March1966, Fifa secretlymanufactured a replica of thetrophy for use in post-matchcelebrations and otherevents.No one knows where theJules Rimet Cup is <strong>to</strong>day as,in the early ‘80s, it wass<strong>to</strong>len again and this time itwould not be discovered…The cup was commissionedfrom French sculp<strong>to</strong>r AbelLafleur in 1929, in time forthe 1930 FIFA World Cupinaugural match held inUruguay. It was a statuetteof Nike, the ancient Greekgoddess of vic<strong>to</strong>ry. Namedafter M.
