TOPEKA COLLEGIATEAUCTIONMARCH 9, 2013
Honoring Past Board Presidentsand Longtime SupportersJett and Tim ElmerPhoto courtesy of Nathan HamTopeka CollegiateHall of Fame 2013
Congratulations, Jett and Tim!“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”~Dr. Seuss, The LoraxOn behalf of the children who walk our halls today, the hundreds who came before them, and those who will follow,we thank you for your commitment, hard work andenlightened leadership. The Topeka Collegiate Board of Trustees
FROM YOUR HEAD OF SCHOOLDear Friends:As we embark on our fourth decade, we celebrate withthose of you who currently have children at our school, thosewho graduated and those whose children graduated manyyears ago. Tonight we also recognize the contributions of Timand Jett Elmer, two of our Pathfinders. Tim and Jett took achance on the new school in 1983 when they brought theirdaughter Bridget, and a few years later, her sister Stacy, toShawnee Country Day School. Some have told me TopekaCollegiate was validated as a school when the Elmers chose to send theirdaughters. The Elmers were not newcomers; they were established in Topekaand their confidence led others to bring their children here.John Dewey wrote, “Education is a social process. Education is growth.Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” Tim and Jettbelieved education was vital for the girls’ future. They knew they needed morethan the normal preparation provided by other schools. They wanted thepersonal attention and commitment to excellence only found at the “new”school. Shawnee Country Day was different. High standards and experiencesbeyond the classroom would give their girls a vastly different kind ofexperience.Special thanks to this year’s auction chairs, Brandi Wells (Trinity, 4th andAinsley, K) and Lovica Pourmirza (Sage, ’12). Their leadership of this eventdemonstrates their belief in our school and their commitment to our continuedexcellence and understanding of the importance of education.I hope you have a wonderful evening and enjoy spending time with oldfriends and new ones. Your support of our auction ensures that we willcontinue to offer the kind of education that Dewey described and that Tim andJett found for their children 30 years ago.The gift of a Topeka Collegiate education is the best gift you can give a child!Sincerely,Mary Beth MarchionyHead of School4

TONIGHT’S GAMES & SPECIALSAunt T’s Cookies - $15 per DozenBe sure to purchase a dozen cookies to take home with you. Cookies and bid sheets areavailable in the foyer near the check-in table. Your child will enjoy this sweet treat!Heads Or Tails GameIt’s the simplest childhood game - will the flipped coin land on the heads side or on thetails side? When you play our version of this fast-moving game, choose correctly eachtime and you will win a Nook HD!Each guest may play by contributing $20 at check-in time or by signing up at your table. You must be in the game before the first coin flip; no late-comersallowed. The game will take place just before the live auction begins. At the auctioneer’s signal, all participants will be asked to stand up andmake their choice by placing both hands on either their “head” or their“tail.” Once you choose, you are committed! The coin will be flipped, the call made, and all contestants who have their hands on the correctbody part remain standing. All others are out and must sit down.Sorry, no second chances, friends; if you are “out,” you will not bepermitted to play further. That’s what makes it fast-moving! Play continues in allconsecutive rounds in the same manner. When the field of contestants has beenwhittled down to around a dozen, these lucky few will be asked to come forward. Whenthree or fewer players remain, they will be asked to stand so that they may not see theircompetitors’ choices. A round that eliminates all contestants will be re-played. The lastperson standing wins!Teacher Gift Certificate BoardYou can help fulfill a teacher’s wish simply by taking a slip off the board for your chosenteacher(s), putting your bid number on it, and placing the slip in the container locatednext to the board. Each gift certificate is $25. Purchase as many for as many teachersas you’d like. This is a great way to show your support for our incredible TCS teachers.100 for $100So popular last year, we brought it back—the opportunity to win the live auction item ofyour choice! Here’s how it works:Purchase one or more tickets at $100 each. We will sell only 100tickets. Right before the live auction, we’ll draw the winning ticket. Ifyou are the owner of that ticket you have won the right to choose ANYlive auction item you want. You may purchase as many tickets as youlike, but your odds of winning are very good - at least 1 in 100.You need not be present to win, but you must be available byphone at the time of the drawing or another ticket will bedrawn.6
TONIGHT’S GAMES & SPECIALSWine TossTry your luck and skill at our adult version of the children’s ring tossgame - our Wine Toss game! For $15, players are given three rings totry their hand at “ringing” a bottle of wine. A variety of red and whitewines—highly rated wines, rare wines, and limited production wines—will be offered, although your winning wine will be a mystery until youunwrap it! You can ring more than one bottle with your five rings, butyou’ll have to choose which one to keep - only one bottle peropportunity, so play often!50/50 GameWe've taken a deck of cards and cut them in half. Half the cards will be setaside for a drawing. The remaining half will be sold to you at $10 per card. When all the cards in the deck are sold, we'll draw for the winning card.Whoever has the matching half will get half the stash of cash—$260. TCSgets the other half. With 52 cards in the deck, your odds are very good—one in 52!Professional DevelopmentLike our graduates, our faculty and staff are lifelong learners.
