According to Ms.Frafjord Johnson, “The main objectivesgoing forward are now in place in ourinternational development policy: toreduce the number of poor in the worldby 2015 by half; to invest in peoplethrough new initiatives in education andhealth; and to provide more resourcesfor debt relief for the poorest countriesworldwide. . .We need to move awayfrom donor-driven development projects1

The Informer May 23, 2003May 23, 2003The InformerFrom the Director.......From the Director.......and move toward approaches that willput the developing countries themselvesin the driver’s seat, but this will requireeven stronger collaborative efforts on thepart of donor countries.”In other words, this is a proactiveyoung woman who started in an internationalschool down in Tanzania and isdoing a wonderful job in workingtoward making the world a better place. She should be a brilliant voice for ourstudents to hear on their last night at ISS.Accreditation Update: We have nowreceived the report of the two accreditationvisitors who visited the schoolrecently. It will be shared with theBoard at their meeting on June 2, andthen a copy will be available in thelibrary for anyone in the school communityto read. It provides an excellentblueprint for us as we move through thenext stages in the accreditation. Animportant next step that will be accomplishedbefore the end of the school yearwill be the completion of a survey by,hopefully, all parents, middle/highschool students and employees. At theend of my message, you will find a letterthat specifically addresses the survey.Thank you for taking a few minutes ofyour time to complete the survey as itwill assist us in improving our school.Last week, we had one certified chefworking for the school. This week, wehave TWO certified chefs at ISS! BrianBårdsen, who has been a trainee chef inour cafeteria, passed his nine-hour practicalexam as the final step in completinghis four year training as a chef. Twoinspectors conducted the exam in ourkitchen and not only did he pass, but hewas given the grade of “Meget Godt.”Truly a wonderful outcome! In fact, Brian is the first ever chef inNorway to be produced out of a trainingprogram in a school. All previous oneshave been done through other industryoutlets, another point that we here at ISScan take special pride in.Of course, it is a wonderful conclusionfor Brian and we salute him. Anotherindividual who is doing his best todeflect all the credit over to Brian is, ofcourse, Jean-Pierre Duc. It isn’t bychance that ISS is allowed to be used asa training facility for Rogaland County’schef training institute. Not only was itnecessary for Jean-Pierre to have hisown long string of chef diplomas inplace, but also his program here at ISShad to go through a rigorous process ofhurdles before we were allowed to havetrainees here. As another nice sidelightto Brian’s success, Jean-Pierre has beenasked to become an examiner himself inthe chef preparation program. So, congratulationsare in order to Jean-Pierreas well!So what happens next for our newlycrownedchef? Brian will be here at ISSuntil the end of the school year, and thenhopes to work in the catering industryoffshore. Congratulations! In the past weeks, there have been severalarticles in the newspaper relating toStortinget discussion on changing thelegislation related to independentschools. In response to questions frommedia, the following information hasbeen written relating to the ISS positionat this point, and I would like to share itwith our families as well:The International School of Stavangerwas founded in 1966 through theStavanger School Office to provide forthe particular needs of children of expatriatecitizens in the same manner asNorwegian schools outside Norway providefor needs of children. The school’sprimary mission is to provide anEnglish-language education to the childrenof expatriate employees of the oilindustry and NATO installations in thearea. Today nearly 500 children of 26nationalities are enrolled at the school. For many years, the school has made100 privately sponsored places availableto local residents. There is a longwaiting list for local families wishing tobe admitted to privately sponsoredplaces. The school is under continual inspectionby international agencies to ensurehigh quality. The school is fully accreditedby two global organizations, theEuropean Council of InternationalSchools, (ECIS), and the New EnglandAssociation of Schools and Colleges,(NEASC). The school is also authorizedby the International BaccalaureateOrganization to offer the InternationalBaccalaureate Diploma and theUniversity of Cambridge to offer theInternational General Certificate ofSecondary Education. ISS is recognizedamong international schools around theworld as an institution that offers aneducation of high quality.ISS has been in contact with theMinistry of Education and Research, and the school is aware that Stortinget isconsidering changes to the law regardingindependent schools. Once thosedecisions are finalized, then the ISSBoard of Trustees and the administrationwill begin the process of reflectingon what, if any, impact the new law mayhave on the school. The process ofreflection will take some time and it isnot anticipated that the school will haveany decisions finalized that will affectthe 2003-2004 school year.Of course, ISS families may contactmyself with questions at any time relatingto the topic of independent schoollegislation.Once again the Parent Associationwent “above and beyond the call ofduty” in providing a lovely spread offood for our employees on May 20 as aspecial thank you to the staff. Mrs.Wendy Lechner, the staff support officerfor the PA is thanked in particular for hermany acts of kindness throughout theyear. In a school that prospers throughoutthe year by countless acts of generousvolunteering by a huge number of parents, how best can the administrationthank each individual? Well this year, the administration has decided to turnthe tables and serve the parents, insteadof us always watching the reverse inaction. On Tuesday, June 3, the administratorsare looking forward to servingbreakfast to both the old and the newParent Association Boards here at ISS.It is a symbolic way for us to extend our23

The Informer May 23 2003News from the Exams CoordinatorMay 23, 2003News from the Counselor.......The InformerTHE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE IN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLSThe most recent edition of ‘IB World’, the magazine of the InternationalBaccalaureate Organization, focuses on the teaching of the IB Diploma Programmein schools in the United States. The editorial reminds us that American HighSchools have been part of the IB Diploma from its start in the mid-1960s, with theUnited Nations International School in New York City contributing to the developmentof the programme. Over the next twenty years over 100 schools in the USjoined the ‘IB family’, and the IBO website now lists 396 US schools offering theIB Diploma.‘IB World’ highlights the work of a number of these schools from Maryland, toMinnesota, to Mississippi (amongst other places). Students are attracted to the IBDiploma in these schools because it is a challenging programme, with positiverecognition from US universities. Theodore O’Neill, the Dean of Admissions at theUniversity of Chicago, characterises the particular qualities of an IB student as ‘awillingness to undertake and the capacity to succeed in a rigorous curriculum, anengagement with a coherent approach to the world of ideas, a spirit of communitythat extends both to fellow IB students and to an outside community in need, and thetenacity and skills of a successful researcher … exactly what selective universitiesare seeking.’ Adam Man, the Diploma Programme Coordinator of Baltimore CityCollege, comments that former students ‘return to us from their universities to tellus that the IB programme prepared them much better for university life than otherprogrammes could have done’. Holly Lewis, the IB Coordinator at RobbinsdaleCooper High School, writes that ‘although IB students are often overwhelmed withthe amount of work they have to do … they come to understand the privilege ofbeing able to work with other motivated students, to be in classes in which theirideas are taken seriously, to be encouraged to express their individual points of view, and to be asked to work hard.’I trust that our graduating Seniors also feel that, in spite of the hard work over thelast two years, the IB programme has prepared them well for university life, and Iwish them all the best in their future studies. I look forward to a new school year, and a new group of enthusiastic IB Diploma students starting their programme inAugust. If you want to read the articles mentioned from ‘IB World’, a copy of the magazineis available in the school library, or you can access some of the material electronicallyon the IBO website www.ibo.orgLynn ParkExam CoordinatorOur Grade 12 class can be proud of all the good university offers they havereceived. The Informer May 23, 2003Primary School NewsMay 23, 2003Primary School NewsThe InformerThe teacher will explain some of theroutines and show you around the classroom. This is a good opportunity to askquestions about the weekly schedule, and for students to get to know their newteacher. We also encourage you to bringin the school supplies and wet weathergear needed to start the school year. Wehave found that this special day facilitatesan easy start to the school year andhelps transition new students and alsoour returning students moving from oneclass to another.Classes begin for Pre-School, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students onWednesday, 13th August.Kindergarten students will attend foronly a half-day for this first week. Theywill eat lunch with their class in thecafeteria, have recess outside and shouldbe picked up at 12:30 p.m. There will beno bus service for Kindergarten availableat this afternoon time, so arrangementsneed to be made for your childrento be picked up for these 3 days of ourfirst week. They will begin staying allday beginning Monday, August 18thand, of course, they can ride the bus toand from school then. Our afternoon program in the Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten will notbegin this first week of school, so parentsneed to make arrangements to pickup their children after 12:00 noon. Theafternoon programs will begin 18thAugust.All students in grades 1st – 5th willattend full days beginning 13th August. That familiar last-day-of-school chantof "no more pencils, no more books …"can be a real disaster if your child takesit to heart. While it’s all right to celebratethe reprieve from school routine,it’s important for your child to continueto read all summer long. Reading skillsare essential for success in school, andthose who don’t read during the summermay find themselves at a disadvantagein August. Here are some ideas to help you "keepthem reading" all summer long.• If they loved the movie, introducethem to the book. Matilda, James andthe Giant Peach and Babe are among themany family movies based on terrificchildren’s books. Check out of themfrom the library and read it together.Your kids will delight in discoveringsome great parts that didn’t appear in themovie.• Go surfing. The internet offers alimitless supply of interesting reading, some of which is bound to appeal toyour child. Go online together at homeor at the local library and search the Websites on our favorite hobbies, sports, movies, pets, travel destination or otherareas of interest.• Go beyond the comics. Whenyou’re reading newspapers and magazines, cut out interesting articles foryour children to read. Occasionallyattach a note posing a question about anarticle, or passing on some related information.• Lighten up. A steady diet of seriousbooks can turn a child off reading. Askyour librarian to recommend somelighter reading. When you’re browsingfor children’s books, look for funnytitles or illustrations. Joke books arefun, too.• Read magazines. Magazines can bestuffed in a pool bag or backpack, andare great for summer reading.• Figure it out. Vary your child’sreading by including some kid-orientedcrossword puzzles, work searches, orword jumbles once or twice a week.• Build it, try it, make it. Frommagic tricks to jewelry making, fromscience experiments to model cars, there’s bound to be a how-to book thatwill inspire your child to begin a project.Have him/her read the instructions, preparea list of materials, and then withyour supervision, go to it! Whatever theresults, remember to praise the efforts.• Be flexible. Maybe you would likeyour children to read classic books allsummer, but it’s important to let themchoose their own recreational reading.Float the plots of your favorite bookspast them, and if they’re interested, terrific!Otherwise, consider saving thosebooks for when you’re reading together.• Out and About. Believe it or not, shopping can help your children becomestronger readers. Use everyday or specialoccasion shopping trips to helpbuild your child’s vocabulary.• Are we there yet? Whether youspend the summer close to home or havea major family trip planned, try toinclude an educational side trip to amuseum, historic site or national park.Read up on it together before you go.While you’re there, pickup descriptivebrochures, flyers or other material thatwill not only make your visit moremeaningful, but will provide reading foryour child.• Look it up. If you children askquestions you can’t explain, go togetherto look up the answers in whateverresources are available – dictionary, encyclopedia, field guide or internet.Tell them when you’re curious aboutsomething, like the name of an animalyou’ve seen while walking together, andhelp them look it up.• Set an example. The best way tokeep your children reading all summerlong is for you to be a reader yourself.Make time for books. Talk about interestingthings you have read and makethe library a more frequent stop than thevideo store. Do it as much for yourselfas for your children. The above "Summertime Reading" tips camefrom the "Report to Parents" by the NationalAssociation of Elementary School Principals.I take this opportunity to say Goodbyeto all our families who are leaving at theend of this school year. I hope you takemany fond memories of ISS with you toyour new homes and schools. Be sure tostay in touch with us and let us knowhow you are doing. If you have any questions, don’t hesi-1617
