Celebratingour JubilariansCongregation <strong>of</strong><strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> founderBlessed Father Basil<strong>Moreau</strong>, C.S.C., called onbrothers and priests <strong>of</strong><strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> to be “Educators in theFaith,” with a special focus on educatingthe hearts and minds <strong>of</strong> the poor.This Spring, the <strong>Moreau</strong> Provincecelebrates 12 Jubilarians who havefollowed this call and dedicated theirlives to serving God and His people.Here are their stories.Bro. Fulgence Dougherty, C.S.C.Bro. Fulgence’s journey in <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> has taken him around the world several times. Bornin Devils Lake, ND, he studied at schools throughout the Midwest. In 1947, he beganlearning Bengali at <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> Mission Seminary in Washington, DC, to prepare for servicein East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.After many years in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he served as a teacher, headmasterand District Superior, Bro. Fulgence accepted assignment to West Africa, where he taughtin Liberia and Ghana. Bro. Fulgence later brought his international experience back tothe U.S., to the University <strong>of</strong> Portland in Oregon, where he advised and mentoredmany foreign students. Retired in 2009, Bro. Fulgence continues to modelmulticultural sensitivity and to promote a vision <strong>of</strong> congregational interdependence.70 th <strong>Moreau</strong> News 2Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionBro. Alfred Salz, C.S.C.Bro. Alfred, a native <strong>of</strong> Waterloo, IA, served in the Army in Europe, the South Pacific andthe Philippines, received degrees in Social Sciences and Chemistry; European History andEthics; and Social Science and American History. All that was even before he entered theCongregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>.He began his extensive teaching career at St. Anthony’s in Long Beach, CA. Afterserving in high schools around the country, he returned to California and taught at St.Francis High School until 2011. A demanding, well-prepared teacher who rejoiced in thesuccess <strong>of</strong> his students, Bro. Alfred has never ceased his own pursuit <strong>of</strong> knowledge. This60 th Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essiondedication to learning makes him a standout for <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> education.
