Celebrating ThoseWho Answeredthe Call“Come Follow Me.” These three simple words begin theConstitutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross, forming a phrase ponderedand prayed over in the discernment of a call to religious life in Holy Cross. On April 28 in Valatie, NY and June 23 in Austin, TX, the MoreauProvince celebrates the anniversaries of 12 men who made the commitmentto follow the Lord and to devote their lives to making Him known, lovedand served through the mission of Holy Cross. In professing their vowsof poverty, celibacy and obedience, these religious — two priests and tenbrothers — first responded to God’s call, and then trusted in His faithful loveto keep the flame of their vocations alive over the years. Now we rejoice withour Jubilarians, celebrating the gifts and talents they have shared in so manyyears of service to others. The Jubilarians you will read about in this issue all exemplify in a variety ofways what it means to be “Educators in the Faith.” As teachers in Holy Crossuniversities and schools, they have inspired generations of students to reachtheir fullest potential. As retreat leaders, they have helped Christians deepentheir faith. As counselors and pastors, they have brought comfort and hopeto people in their darkest hours. Our Jubilarians have stood with the poor, worked for social justice and advocated for a greener and more sustainableplanet. They are a blessing to Holy Cross as well — they have served their ownBrothers in Holy Cross as provincial leaders, formators, vocation directors, companions and caretakers of our common life and mission. Please join me in giving thanks to God for the many ways in which theseBrothers have responded to the call to “Come Follow Me” and in doing so,have greatly inspired us.Brother William Zaydak, C.S.C.Provincial“Our Jubilarians havestood with the poor, worked for socialjustice and advocatedfor a greener and moresustainable planet.MoreauTHE CONGREGATION OF HOLY CROSSMoreau Province1101 St. Edward’s DriveAustin, TX 78704(512) 442-7856www.holycrossbrothers.orgEditorial BoardBrother Joseph Esparza, C.S.C., EditorBrother Jonathan Beebe, C.S.C.Brother Richard Critz, C.S.C.Brother William Nick, C.S.C.Brother William Zaydak, C.S.C.MISSION STATEMENTIn founding the Congregation of Holy Cross, BlessedBasil Moreau challenged his first companions to a way oflife and service that would “contribute to preparing theworld for better times.” This same challenge is now ours, for that contribution is as urgent today as when FatherMoreau first responded to God’s call in the aftermath ofthe French Revolution. As members of the Moreau Province of theCongregation of Holy Cross, we strive to be “men withhope to bring” by the example of our courage in lifeand our competence in ministry. Ours is a “work ofresurrection.” In this work, “we assist others not only torecognize and develop their own gifts but also to discoverthe deepest longing in their lives.” We commit ourselvesto this work through our fidelity to the Constitutions of theCongregation of Holy Cross, our union with one another, and our service in the church. As community and in ministry, we “live and workas priests and brothers together” as witnesses to FatherMoreau’s vision and profound hope for Holy Cross. Webelieve our integrity and fidelity to this way of life willhasten the better times for which our world longs. We areconvinced this world can be transformed by our life andwork in response to God’s grace. In all our ministries — educational, parochial, pastoral — we “stand with the poor and afflicted,” andwe “support men and women of grace and goodwillin their efforts to form communities of the comingkingdom.” Our choice of ministries and our continuingpresence are based upon our ability to make that standand offer that support. When we can no longer bepresent, our legacy continues through our colleagues. As religious of Holy Cross, our deepest desire isto have “formed in us by God’s enablement the livinglikeness of Jesus Christ.” We recognize that such aformation requires a trust in God’s providential presenceand activity in our lives and through our ministries, aclose union with one another and with our colleagues, and an acceptance of the cross in all its forms as “ouronly hope.”This is our commitment, this is our way of life.Because “we delight in our vocation, we will share itwith others,” and invite them to join us in transformingthis world by preparing it for better times. Together, wecan advance the mission of Jesus and the mandate fromFather Moreau to “make God known, loved, and served, and thus bring salvation to others.”Photo Credits:2013 JubilariansMoreau Province ArchivesNews1 Moreau News
