What are the accommodation and general facilities like? For most people, the main attraction of travelling to a different countryis to see new sights and enjoy new experiences. Sometimes thosenew experiences can make life harder or more inconvenient than youmay like, such as toilet hygiene or different food, or simply a differentattitude to solving problems. This is all part of the challenge you aresigning up for! Many challenges involve camping because of the remotenature of our trips; tents are usually two-man, expedition type tents, not known to be roomy! Camp is usually equipped with cooks, diningtents, three course dinners and sometimes a sunset bar! We stay atcomfortable (but not luxurious) hotels at the start and end of the trip.Meals are designed to give you plenty of energy. On some trips we usehotels throughout; these are usually of a traditional style, they can varywidely as they are chosen primarily for their location. A sense of humourand sense of adventure are two of the most important things to bringwith you - we can guarantee that coming face-to-face with experiencesoutside your normal ‘comfort zone’ will help you bond with your groupand provide you with plenty of things to laugh about!Do we fly direct? When booking group flights we endeavour to find the best flights thatmatch our itinerary. There are often no direct flights to our destination,so do be prepared for transit stops: bring a good book or chat to yourfellow participants! Airlines that do offer direct flights rarely offercompetitive rates for groups. Please remember that the main purposeof our trips is to raise money for charity! Our No. 1 question! What are the toilet facilities like?On some trips where we camp, our camps have toilet tents with ‘luxurious’porta-loos, at other times latrines will be dug. The toilet system we usedoes keep the camp area as hygienic and environmentally-friendly aspossible. We burn any paper waste before we leave camp, and all holes arefilled in. During the day we encourage you to burn or carry out any waste. You may find it useful to carry plastic nappy bags with you! Please do notleave toilet paper on the trails or behind bushes. You will be briefed fullyon toilet etiquette when you join the trip! Many places where we camp donot have any facilities, but often there are natural water sources such asstreams or lakes. Please wash away from the water source where possible(use buckets), and use biodegradable soaps and shampoos, as chemicalsdo upset the balance of the water and harm plant and animal life, as wellas causing potential harm to any local people.I am a vegetarian, will there be food for me?Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually aproblem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expectas much variety as you would have access to at home – we will be invery rural areas and among people of a different culture who may notunderstand your requirements, however willing they are to help. If youknow there are plenty of foods you cannot eat you may wish to bringextra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Pleasefeel free to ask us for advice. We ask you to tell us if there are certainfoods you definitely can’t eat, not food you aren’t partial to!Do I carry my own luggage? On each trip your luggage is transported by vehicles, porters, camels, mules, yaks, etc! You cannot access your main packs during the day soneed to carry a day-pack with your fleece, waterproof, sun-cream, hat, camera, water etc. Suitcases are unsuitable; you should bring a softrucksack or expedition kitbag. Discover Adventure Kitbags are speciallydesigned for the rigours of our challenges. See website for details.Do I need travel insurance?Yes, you must have adequate travel insurance cover in order toparticipate in any overseas challenge. This can either be purchasedthrough us or you may use your own – make sure it is appropriate andwe will require proof that you have it.How am I protected? All bookings including a flight are authorized under Discover AdventureLtd’s ATOL number 5636 and are protected under the ATOL scheme.ABTOT protection is provided for non-flight packages commencing inand returning to the UK and other non-flight packages excluding prearrangedtravel to and from your destination. Can I fly from a regional airport? Some airlines do offer regional departures, but most flights are fromLondon, please check with us.Do I book my own flight? Not all of our challenges taking place in Europe include a flight as partof the package. In these cases it is your responsibility to purchase yourown flights and to arrive in good time to meet with your group at thestart of the challenge. All destinations beyond Europe do include flightsas part of the package. If you prefer to book your own flight for our non-European Challenges, please ask us for a land-only cost. Any arrangements we make for youwill incur an administration fee. We offer several challenges where it ispossible to take part in a community project visit or trip extension afteryou have completed your main challenge.Do you practice Sustainable Tourism?Long before ‘Sustainable Tourism’ became a recognised phrase,we designed and ran our trips to ensure they made the minimumimpact on the environment and a highly positive impact on the localcommunities we pass through. Regular employment in poor areas isvital and impacts on every aspect of the life of the family of each guide, porter, driver or cook we employ. In addition, we are involved withseveral community projects on a long-term basis. We believe that ourtrips have many positive advantages for the worldwide communities wework with, the charity you are raising money for and, of course, for you!Tel 01722 718444www.discoveradventure.com39
