DEATH’S HALF ACRE by Margaret Maron<br />

(Grand Central, $24.99). Fourteenth in the award winning<br />

Deborah Knott series. Rating: A Judge Deborah Knott<br />

is lucky to have been brought up in a large, loving family<br />

in the North Carolina countryside. The flavor of the area<br />

is changing as farmers and other landowners are selling out<br />

to developers. McMansions are cropping up all over, and<br />

the county commissioners seem to be willing to sell out the<br />

charm of the area for money, money, money.<br />

Candace Bradshaw is one of the most controversial<br />

of the commissioners. Born to a poor, trashy family,<br />

she worked hard, married well, and became successful<br />

after a fashion. She was found dead in the new home she<br />

bought with cash. Initially thought to be a suicide, her death<br />

is found to be murder. When the police are unable to find<br />

the records she kept on her dirty dealings, narrowing the<br />

list of suspects gets more difficult. When her daughter is<br />

also found murdered, the investigation heats up.<br />

I was truly surprised by the culprit’s identity,<br />

though the author played fair with the clues. The Knott<br />

family is such a warm clan, you just know you’d fit right in<br />

and be welcomed with open arms if you moved to the area<br />

with the right attitude. Keeping the land from developers<br />

is a scene that is being played out with various rates of<br />

success throughout the world. Thankfully the Knotts take<br />

care of Colleton County, North Carolina. The next book in<br />

the series can’t come quickly enough for me..<br />

ZAPPED by Carol Higgins Clark. (Scribner,<br />

$24.00). Eleventh in the Regan Reilly series. Rating: B<br />

Regan Reilly and her husband Jack are renovating their<br />

loft in Tribeca after buying the apartment next door. The<br />

Reilly’s aren’t aware that the seller, Conrad Spreckles is<br />

in the process of divorcing his second, younger wife and<br />

hadn’t told her about the sale. It was his due to the<br />

prenuptial agreement. Conrad isn’t aware that his wife<br />

had a safe installed in the closet and if the contents are ever<br />

revealed, Lorraine’s career as an actress would be dead in<br />

the water. No one is aware that a construction worker<br />

found the safe and has plans to break into it, sure there is<br />

a treasure inside.<br />

Regan and Jack return from a trip to Cape Cod<br />

and find themselves in the midst of a black out. Jack is at<br />

work and Regan thought she was alone in the apartment,<br />

until she discovers an intruder. Luckily he leaves without<br />

doing any harm.<br />

Sadly, Regan finds out from her visiting friend Kit<br />

that there is a female predator on the loose. Kit had gone<br />

to a comedy club with a woman who was also attending an<br />

insurance conference. Kit is on crutches due to a recent<br />

surgery, and can’t believe that Georgina went off and left<br />

her. Luckily there are nice people around to help her, but<br />

she finds out Georgina is truly disturbed. She had a bad<br />

breakup years ago, and now picks up men who resemble<br />

her ex, drugs them, and brands them with a homemade<br />

snake tattoo.<br />

If this wasn’t enough action during a black out, a<br />

gallery specializing in glass works has been robbed, and the<br />

investigations converge to a climatic finale. The Reilly’s<br />

make a great team, and all’s well that ends well.<br />

While I enjoyed this book, as the others in the<br />

series, I did wonder about the ease that the rather large cast<br />

of characters moved about New York City in a blackout.<br />

Having been lucky enough to never be in that situation, I<br />

would have thought traffic would have been more of a<br />

nightmare. But things do seem to work out when Regan is<br />

around.<br />

DRINK TO YESTERDAY by Manning Coles.<br />

(Rue Morgue Press, $14.95). Trade paperback, reissue.<br />

First in the Tommy Hambleon series. Rating: A This<br />

review is going to be a bit hard to write, as there is a definite<br />

spoiler for the second book. I’m just going to say that it<br />

takes place during World War I, and shows the life of a pair<br />

of British intelligence agents who are living in Cologne,<br />

Germany.<br />

This is one of the few books I have made the time<br />

to re-read. I have long been a fan of Manning Coles. I<br />

discovered Coles one day at work when my lunch time card<br />

game was cancelled. I was left without a book, and saw<br />

THE BASLE EXPRESS on the book swap shelf. I began<br />

reading it and was instantly hooked.<br />

Reading this was almost like reading it for the first<br />

time, I had forgotten so much, so I was able to enjoy this<br />

book again. Though I had the book in my collection, I really<br />

enjoyed the introduction by Tom and Enid Schantz. Highly<br />

recommended, with continuing thanks to Rue Morgue<br />

Press for bringing an old favorite back to print.<br />

COCKATIELS AT SEVEN by Donna Andrews<br />

(St. Martin’s Minotaur, $23.95). Ninth in the hilarious Meg<br />

Langslow series. Rating: A- Even when things are almost<br />

normal with her family, life can still be interesting for Meg<br />

Langslow. She’s asked by her friend Karen to take care of<br />

her son, Timmy. Karen and Meg haven’t seen much of<br />

each other recently, so Meg isn’t aware of what may be<br />

going on in Karen’s life. That makes life harder for Meg<br />

when Karen doesn’t return for Timmy, nor does she answer<br />

her cell phone.<br />

Karen has moved since Meg had been in contact<br />

with her, so she goes to Karen’s workplace to find out<br />

where Karen may have gone. She finds out Karen’s<br />

employer has also lost contact with her, and isn’t happy
