Once your daughter is registered you willautomatically receive details about the entrance process.Entrance Options:There are two options available to parents who wish their daughters to enter<strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong>’s at Year 9 (13+):(a) Diagnostic Test at 11+Registered girls may enter for the entrance examination for Year 7 (11+) for diagnosticpurposes. This would provide parents with details of their daughter’s performance andwill result in the following options:••Your daughter may perform so well that she is offered a place at 13+ conditionalonly on her maintaining her standard of work through to Common Entrance orYear 8 examinations at her school. This would require a report and a referencefrom your daughter’s current school which would indicate that the standard hadbeen maintained. However, if these girls would like to enter for a scholarship at 13+they will be required to take the 13+ entrance examination at the same time asother candidates.••Your daughter may perform sufficiently well for her to be on track to enter <strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong>’sat 13+ but we will require her to be re-tested at 13+ to ensure she will feel comfortablehere and to decide the appropriate sets.Taster Day:All registered Year 9 entrants,regardless of their entryprocess, will be invited to aTaster Day where they will beable to join current <strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong>’spupils for lunch and lessons.There will also be a meetingwith the Headmistress and a15 minute interview with theHead of Middle School.13+ EntranceExamination:The entrance test will takeplace in November of theyear prior to entry. All thegirls will be tested on thesame day. A reference willbe requested directly fromyour daughter’s currentschool before the test date.Parents should notify theirdaughter’s school that arequest will be coming toavoid any embarrassment.The tests will be in English,mathematics and a modernforeign language. We look for clarity, liveliness andan ability to detect implicit as well as explicit meaning. Accuracy inspelling, punctuation, paragraphing and organisation of material arealso important.Time: 1 hour and 15 minutesMathematics: There will be two sections to the paper. Candidates willneed to have available a pen, pencil, eraser, ruler, pair of compassesand a protractor. Calculators may not be used.The first section will test the ability to apply standard arithmeticaland mathematical techniques with accuracy.The second section will test the ability of students to applymathematical techniques to solving more complex problems wherethe appropriate mathematics will have to be selected and used.The mathematics required will reflect those topics that wouldhave been covered by students in Year 7 and the first part of Year 8.Those topics may include, but will not necessarily be limited to, anyof the following:Use of standard form to represent small and largenumbers••Using approximations to 1 significant figure to estimate calculations••Percentage problems including simple interest••Ratio and direct proportion••Simple conversions including foreign currency••Simplification of algebraic expressions including those involvingbrackets and powers••Substitution into algebraic formulae••Solving more complex algebraic equations including brackets••Speed, distance and time calculations••Areas of triangles and quadrilateralsTime: 1 hour and 15 minutesModern Languages: The paper will include a series of questionsand an open ended writing task in a Modern Foreign Language.(French, German, Italian or Spanish as appropriate to thecandidate’s experience.)Candidates will be required to have a short conversation, in theirchosen language, with the Head of Modern Languages during thetaster day. Fee InformationFees as from September <strong>2013</strong>Registration and Entrance Fee:£80 for UK candidates (non returnable).£200 for overseas candidates (non returnable).Deposit (on acceptance of place):£500 refundable on final account. If family is basedoverseas, a deposit of a full term’s tuition fee is required.Tuition Fee:£4,340 per term.All the costs incurred in the usual course of the curriculum educationof the School, including provision of necessary education materialsand as outlined in the Schedule of Fees, are met by the tuition feeunless otherwise notified. The cost of academic public examinationsis included in the tuition fee until September 2015, from which timethey will be charged as supplemental items.Lunch:£190 per term.Lunch is charged to all pupils, except for those girls in the Sixth Formwho wish to opt out. Bursaries can be any value up to the full amount of the fee, andmay include assistance with the cost of school trips and bus travel.They are awarded to candidates who have satisfied the entrancerequirements and the financial criteria as set out by the Governors.The Headmistress and the Bursar jointly review applications andmake recommendations on behalf of the Governors. Bursaries arereviewed annually, or in certain cases more frequently; they mayincrease or decrease according to circumstances.How do I qualify for a bursary?Bursary support is based on an assessment of financial circumstances.It considers capital assets as well as income and makes allowancesfor dependents and pensions. As a guide, an award of a bursary ispossible if assessed resources (after income taxes, national insurance,mortgage interest and other fundamental costs) are less than£35-£40,000. If net resources are assessed at less than £10-£12,000,a bursary may cover the full fees. These levels are adjusted to takeaccount of other more or less favourable factors.How do I apply for a bursary?Parents of registered candidates will be requested to completean application form at the appropriate time. The completed formand supporting papers should be returned to the Bursary office atthe School.Payment of FeesAcceptable payment options include termly direct debit, internetbank transfer or monthly standing order. A charge is made for latepayment and is detailed on each bill. An option to pay by monthlydirect debit is administered by School Fee Plan.Notice of removal of a pupil from the School must be given in writingto the Headmistress one full term beforehand, or payment of thenext term’s fees will be required. This also applies from acceptance ofan offer of a place.Notice of discontinuing subjects for which extra fees are chargedmust be given in writing not later than one full term beforehand; inthe case of instrumental lessons such notice should be addressed tothe Director of Music.Please note that cheques for music tuition fees must be madepayable to the teacher who raises the invoice and not to theSchool. All other cheques should be made payable to <strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong>and <strong>St</strong> <strong>Katharine</strong> and addressed to the Bursar.Impact of Fee RisesIn order to appreciate the impact of possible future fee increases,parents should note that over the course of a 7 year school career,the current termly fee of £4,340 would increase to £5,816 at anannualised fee increase of 5%.Educational VisitsThe School arranges a large number of expeditions, educational visitsand cultural holidays. Competitive rates are negotiated for thesestudent groups. We absorb the cost of overheads for arranging theseexpeditions into the price set for those taking advantage of them.Overheads take into account both how essential, educationally, it isfor the expedition to be open to all and the financial risk to theSchool in booking the travel and accommodation etc. They includethe expenses of staff carrying out essential supervision of pupils butstaff do not benefit financially from running expeditions.12


The SchoolInsuranceNo reduction is made for absence but there is available a School FeesRefund Scheme which will be offered on the first bill together withPersonal Accident and Personal Effects cover.Parents may also be interested in the School Fees Trust Scheme operatedby SFS Group, which pays school fees directly to the School should aparent die during the period for which a girl attends the School.Further details may be obtained from the Bursar. Medical insurance forgirls is also available.Conditions of EntryHowever the fees are paid, the contractual liability remains with thesignatories of the Parent Contract. The School reserves the right to askthe parent to withdraw the pupil if this is in the interest either of theSchool or the pupil herself.All pupils attend the School’s assemblies and services which cover awide range of moral, spiritual and religious topics. The School servicesare based on the Anglican Liturgy.Throughout a girl’s time at <strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong> and <strong>St</strong> <strong>Katharine</strong>, the School doctorshall continue to have the right to give the girl’s parent or guardian orthe Headmistress any confidential information about the girl if sheconsiders that it is in the girl’s own interest or desirable for the protectionof other members of the School that she should do so.The School can accept no responsibility for any loss or damage that mayhappen to a girl’s property while on the School premises.Overseas Candidates<strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong> and <strong>St</strong> <strong>Katharine</strong> is a Tier 4 sponsor licence holder under UKBorder Agency regulations. Candidates wishing to enter the School whoare not British passport holders and who do not live within the EuropeanEconomic Area (EEA) will be required to follow the procedures whichhave been issued by the UK Border Agency. Every day at8.50am different year groups gather for assembly or chapel servicesand once a week a whole school assembly is held. In the Lower andMiddle Schools, eight lessons are taught each day with a short breakin the morning and afternoon. In the Sixth Form the timetable willdepend on subject choice, but usually there are seven lessons perweek per subject. Lunch is between 12.05pm - 1.15pm. At thediscretion of the Head of Section, pupils in the Sixth Form maytake one early afternoon per week should they have no othercommitments.13

Within this programme, pupils assess their interests,their strengths and weaknesses and the requirements for enteringdifferent professions. They are also prepared for work experienceplacements and at least one week of work experience is compulsoryfor all Year 11 pupils. All pupils are interviewed individually by amember of the careers team in Years 11 and L6. The careers library isopen during the school day. A Morrisby psychometric profile andfollow up interview with a careers advisor is offered to girls at the endof Year 10. There is a team of well qualified teaching and dedicatedstaff to give advice and guidance to all girls at various stages wherechoices are made, right through to university applications.Considerable help is given with the UCAS application process. There isa Higher Education evening for girls and parents; Old Girls come backand discuss their courses, and practice interviews are arranged.Specialist advice on applications to universities overseas is alsoavailable.The school holds the Investors in Careers award for excellence inCareers and Higher Education Guidance.A number of examination papers have been subject to a review of marking.Any changes resulting from the review will be made to the exam results on our website.15

Parents’Evenings are held for each year group and full, informative annualreports are issued. Each girl is monitored at regular intervals by hersubject teachers and receives grades for both effort and attainmentwhich are sent home at regular intervals in the year.Communication with ParentsCommunication with parents takes place in a variety of ways:(i) The Weekly Newsletter, sent via Clarion Call on Fridays,includes letters home to parents, notices and details offorthcoming events.(ii) From September <strong>2013</strong> sports information will be managedvia the SHSK Sports website listing fixtures, results, directionsto grounds and team lists. Follow the ‘Sports Fixtures’ linkfrom the school website.(iii) The School extranet, accessed via the ‘Pupil & Parent Area’on the home page of the School website, contains newsand detailed school information for pupils and parents.(iv) Clarion Call, email and text messages will be used to send outspecific notices to year groups or other parent groups and willalso highlight last minute changes to the School day, trips,and other activities.(v) Parents will be sent a copy of ‘Lines’, the termly newsletter,which highlights activities and successes within school.<strong>St</strong> <strong>Helen</strong>’s has an active and enthusiastic Parents’ Association thatoffers useful opportunities for parents to meet and to be involvedin the life of the School. Parents also provide invaluable help atcareers conventions, in providing ‘mock’ interviews, in offeringwork experience placements and in accompanying off-site visitsfor younger pupils.17
