My fellow anglers and friends,
First of all I apologize that this issue is late. This is because
we are launching a new travel magazine called Escapy and
we have been overwhelmed. We are also looking at new f-
ormats to make reader both The Asian Angler and Escapy
easier thus providing for a better reader experience especially on mobile devices.
The new format can be seen in Escapy this month.
Last month has been a super busy month as we have been doing some travelling
as well with Tourism Terengganu for the Terengganu International Squid
Jigging Festival 2015 where we were invited together with 122 other local and
international media folks. The adventure has been fun.
In this issue we tested the Abu Garcia Ikazuchi Ryoku II rod and the Berkley
Powerbait Rattle Shrimp. And we looked at other products such as the new
VFOX jigs, new reels from Accurate and Pflueger, pliers, etc. There will be
more to come in future issues.
Hope you enjoy this issue. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish
all our Muslim readers and friends Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Thank you and happy fishing.
Cheers,
Test Information
Testing Grounds: Exotic Pond Rawang
Series: Ikazuchi Ryoku II
Model: AIRS662H A
Length: 6’ 6”
Power: Heavy
Lure Wt.: 3/8-1 1/2oz
Line Wt.: 12-25lb
Configuration: 2 pieces
Opponents: Asian catfish, Amazon red tail catfish
Pure Fishing recently launched the Abu Garcia
Ikazuchi Ryoku II following up with the first Ikazuchi
Ryoku that was launched some 5 years ago. Being the
designer of the first Ikazuchi Ryoku, I was eager to see
what its younger sibling would be like.

uchi Ryoku II
15

Different DNA
The new Ikazuchi Ryoku or Ryoku II has
a totally different DNA. It has turned into
a rod for bigger game. It uses a larger diameter
blank and it has somewhat of a
wild image. In car terms the first Ikazuchi
Ryoku would be like Nissan GTR being
a more refined racer while the Ryoku
II is more Ford Mustang, a rougher muscle
car. They’re both very different rods.

19
Wild Image
The Ikazuchi Ryoku II has a tough look,
like a thug waiting to bully somebody or in
this case, some fish. With thicker diameter
blank wrapped in carbon fibre wrap on the
specification section of the rod, plus its ruggedly
designed EVA; the Ikazuchi Ryoku II
looks wild and untamed.

Quality Components
The Ikazuchi Ryoku II comes with with
Fuji guides that are tougher than normal
guides and disperses heat faster thus
lowering stress and damage on fishing
lines. It also comes with Fuji reel seats
that offer better or a more secure hold
onto the reel.

23
Weight Wise
With a thicker or larger diameter
blank I was expecting the Ryoku II
to be on the heavier side. I picked
it up and to my surprise it is lighter
than expected. Not super light kind
of light but it falls within the light
weight category. It is a little tip heavy
but with a reel secured to it bringing
the weight backwards, it balances
pretty well.

Lab Test
Equipment Used
Rod Tested: AIRS602MH A
Reel: Penn Torque TRQ55
Lines: Berkley Big Game 40lb
Pressure Achieved: 21.4lb / 9.7kg
At our lab we tortured the Ikazuchi
Ryoku II. The model we tested is the 6
feet medium heavy model rated at max
20lb. We put the rod through the pressure
test and after some very hard pushing
we managed to 21.4lb of which is
1.4lb above the rated 20lb.
The Ikazuchi Ryoku II has a pretty consistent
power range until it reaches about
12lb. Here it sorts of goes through a power
drop but we exerted a lot more force
and it started giving more again until it
reached 21.4lb and then it goes through
another power drop.

Field Test
Equipment Used
Model: AIRS662H A
Reel: Abu Garcia Promax Spinning
Lines: Berkley Big Game 30lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish
Casting wise, the Ryoku II is a decent
caster. It does have a pretty forgiving tip
which helps with casting. Casting live
baits weighing about 100 to 150g we got
pretty good distances. It is a decent caster.

Fish Management
With Amazon red tails constantly hitting
our baits we had to battle a few of these
brutes. The Ryoku II certainly can handle
them without issues. It has enough
power to turn heads and stop brutes
from heading into the waterwheels. The
inconsistent power of the blank wasn’t
much of an issue as we automatically
adjusted to the power delivery keeping
things in line.

Likes & Dislikes
What We Like
Pretty lightweight for a rod of this size.
Quite well balance.
Aggressive and bold designs.
Fuji guides of which are tough and reliable.
Fuji reel seat that holds reel securely in place.
Carbon fibre wraps that add some sportiness
to it.
Not So Likeable
The only bone I would pick will be the inconsistent
power delivery. That said it is still
a capable rod and will still manage the fight
well. The other bone will be the unavailability
of mid powered models.

Models:
AIRS562MH A (Medium Heavy), Length: 5’6”, Lure Wt.: 1/4-3/4oz., Line:
8-17lb
AIRS602MH A (Medium Heavy), Length: 6’, Lure Wt.: 1/4-1oz., Line: 10-
20lb
AIRS662H A (Heavy), Length: 6’6”, Lure Wt.: 3/8-1 1/2oz., Line: 12-25lb
AIRS702H A (Heavy), Length: 7’0”, Lure Wt.: 1/2-2oz., Line: 14-30lb
Blank Type: Graphite 24 Ton
Guides: Fuji SVOG
Reel Seat: Fuji DPS
Rod Handle(Grips): EVA - Black / Dark Grey
Wraps: Carbon Fibre
Configuration: 2 piece

Verdict
The Abu Garcia Ikazuchi Ryoku II is a
tough looking rod that come with quality
Fuji components making it a good
value for money rod. If you are looking
for a heaver rod, this will be one to keep
in mind.

Berkley Powerbait Rattle Shrimp
Philemon Foo

Test Information
Testing Grounds: SW Jurassic
Series: PowerBait
Model: Rattle Shrimp
Length: 3”& 4”
Berkley Powerbaits have been catrching fish
for a very long time now. We recently tested out
the Berkley Powerbait Rattle Shrimp to see how
well they work. Before we go into the article it is
worth knowing that the Powerbaits are scented
inside. When fish bites the Powerbait scent gets
into the fishes mouth and they tend to hold on
longer.
That said, the bait will first need to attract a fish to
take a bite. To that it will need to be able to swim
and present itself as something a fish will want to
eat. One can pack lots of scent into the bait but if
it cannot get any fishes interested, the scent within
will not be able to do its work. There is a way
around this and it involves something sharp like
a needle.
39

Looks Prawnish

The Powerbait Rattle Shrimp does
look like a prawn / shrimp in general
but not exactly like a live one.
We want to know how they swim
but what’s more important is if any
fish would take it as that is the objective
of every lure / bait.
41

Field Test
Equipment Used
Rod: Abu Garcia Gambit Iron Cavalier
Model: AGC662M A
Reel: Abu Garcia Revo Beast
Line: Berkley Fireline Fused
Poundage: 15lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish
Poundage: 17lb
We took a bunch of them to the SW Jurassic
Sports Fishing Pond in Sepang (a
coastal town off Selangor) to see if they
are any good. We were told that fishing
there has since become challenging as
the SW Jurassic is a sports fishing pond
and fishes have been caught and released
thus they learn and become more cautious.

Much Hated
Should you intend to fish the SW Jurassic
pond my recommendation is to fish
before the sun goes crazy hot and in the
evening when the sun gets tired and goes
down. We did just that and we realized
how just how much the finned gladiators
hated the Powerbait Rattle Shrimp.
We were hitting trevallies and groupers
(mainly groupers) every 10 to 15 minutes
of casting and slowly retrieving. It
is also quite tough being able to take the
abuses of these fishes an an average of
one to three fishes.

Verdict
So does the Berkley Powerbait Rattle
Shrimp Work? Heck, yeah it works. Just
play it slow and if the fishes are within
the zone, chances are they will attack.

one. They come with tough heat
treated stainless steel gear shaft and
gears to managed tough fighting giant
brutes. Gear ratio on these reels
are 6:1.

Twin Drag System

When it comes to drag, these reels
have really strong drag that can managed
very tough fighters.. They come
with a twin drag system that is ultra
smooth allowing for greater versatility
where the pressure can be adjusted
for medium to hard fighting
brutes.
Extra Long Power

87
Handle
The Accurate Boss Extreme Jigging
reels come with extra long power
handles and a round tough but light
handle knob that has some weight
removed. Longer handles allow for
faster cranking speeds of which is
great.

Summary

Should you be looking for a good
looking, tough, rigid, powerhouse
of a reel; this is one reel to consider.
There is more. If you are one who
is particular with where things are
made, the Accurate reels are made in
USA.
Note: Products in this section have not been tested b
Accurate Twin Spin
Using TwinDrag technology,
Accurate has created the TwinSpin
the world’s only true TwinDrag
spinning reel designed for super
heavy-duty angling performance.
Machined from the same highgrade
materials as other Accurate
reels, the TwinSpin has the strength
and heat dissipating qualities to
beat the kind of big, powerful fish
like marlin, tuna and wahoo that
you otherwise wouldn’t think to
challenge with a spinning reel.

y The Asian Angler magazine
Other features to maximize leverage
include a power handle, a unique,
adjustable pre-set knob on the front
of the spool to precisely control drag
tension, and a rugged, manual bail
mechanism for picking up line.
95

Available in a 6:1 high-speed retrieve
ratio, the TwinSpin 30 lays more than
50 inches of line on the reel spool
with every full revolution of the reel’s
handle (also available in a 4:1 higher
torque ratio). A series of circular,
machined holes around the skirted
spool serves to reduce heat build-up,
and helps trim the reel’s weight.
Tok Wan So’Do Spoo

109
ns
Recently I started looking paying more
attention to fishing tackle made locally. The
reason behind this new found interest of
mine is that there are some pretty good locally
made items available in stores and I
would like to help them get their message
out too. This in return will in some way help
our economy.

Lots Of Spoons

When it comes to spoons you would have
most likely heard of brand names such as
Abu Island, Siam Spoon, Yo-zuri Altima,
Mepps, and many more. These are well
known spoons who have captured the hearts
of anglers and they are well known.
111

What About The So’D
What about Tok Wan So’Do spoons? If
you’re thinking... WHAAAT? So did I.
Hence I decided to buy some and I did so
for two reasons.
1. They’re made in Malaysia (please correct
me if I am wrong)
And...
2. I want to know if they are any good.

o?
113

Limited In Numbers

As of now, I have not tested the spoon yet
but there is one thing I like about them and
it is that they are limited in numbers, at least
for now. They look good too as do the work
of most east coast (Peninsular Malaysia)
craftsmen do.
115

Finesse Action

The So’Do spoon is made for finesse fishing.
They have a claimed weight of 4 grams and
they’re fitted with a single lure hook. There
are anglers who have successfully fished
with them and soon I will too.
VFOX Split Ring And

119
Bent Nose Pliers
Every angler should have at least one
split ring pliers especially if you are into lure
casting. Anyone who has tried opening up
split rings with one’s fingers and nails will
know the justice that these pliers do.
Bent nose pliers on the other hand make
good hook removers making them invaluable
tools in an angler’s tackle box. Of
course they can be used for other things as
well both fishing and non-fishing.

Feels Tough And Loo

121
ks Good
VFOX recently launched the new D&C
Split Ring Pliers (#3022) and Bent Nose Pliers
(#3044) here in Malaysia and Singapore.
They look good coming in black and gun
metal silver with black and orange rubber
handle for a better more comfortable grip.

There Is More

Apart from their main duties both pliers
come with cutter should you need to cut
steel wire leaders (or hooks when in an
emergency), crimpers, etc. making them
ideal not just in an angler’s tackle box but
also a normal household tool box.
Hook removers are useful tools of an
angler. They come in many form and designs.
This here is the Happy Fishing Hook
Remover CW035-8 that comes with a sturdy
metal tube, de-hooking piece, brightly
colored plastic, with a black rubber.

Easy To Use

The Happy Fishing Hook Remover is easy to
use and comprehend. It comes spring loaded
that allows for it to grab on to the hook.
This is done by simply placing the yellow
and black section on your palm and holding
the levers with two other fingers, and pressing
them together. A twist or a jolt should
release the hook from the fishes mouth or
throat, depending on where the hook is.
VFOX 3 Layer Plier P

147
ouch
One of the things anglers cannot live
without are pliers. There is the split ring pliers
to open up split rings. There is the sharp
pointy long nose pliers to reach further into
the fish’s throats to remove stuck hooks. And
then there is the bent nose (long or short)
that is even better at removing hooks.
Oh, then there are pliers with springs, pliers
with cutters, pliers with little gadgets such
as knives, screwdrivers, files, torch lights,
etc. We anglers just love our pliers don’t we?
I have at least 5 pairs of pliers in my fishing
cupboard, and two more for other none
fishing uses. Well, here is a pouch for them.

Tough Pouch

The VFOX 3 Layer Plier Pouch is made of
cloth, plastics, and very hard foam type substance
that feel somewhat like hard EVA. It
is tough and done so for two reasons. One is
to keep the pliers and every other thing you
securely keep in it safe. The other is to keep
the pliers from tearing up the pouch.
149

Velcro Strap

To hold your pliers in it securely, two of the
compartments can be secured with a Velcro
strap. The larger compartment does not
have a Velcro strap though. There is also a
flap with Velcro at the back to secure the
pouch to your belt.
151

153

D Ring & Clip

The VFOX 3 Layer Plier Pouch comes with a
D ring that you can secure things to, as well
as a clip that can be used to clip things too,
or two clip the pouch to something. Having
both these things may not sound like much
but they do come in handy in times of need.
155

Summary

We don’t carry three pliers when we fish of
course. What I normally carry with me are
a bent nose pliers for hook removal, a split
ring pliers, and a braided line cutter (scissors).
This pouch will certainly be of good
use.
Fishing With Spoons Part 6 - B
And Retrieve

161
Philemon Foo
asic Presentations: Pause
We use spoons when we eat food
or when we drink something soupy.
Fishes are more vicious. They attack
spoons. They will lunge at the spoon as
it swims by or during the drop. Last issue
we discussed straight retrieve (swim
by).
What else can you do when you are doing
straight retrieves but you are not
catching anything assuming that the
fishes are there? Change your presentation.
One method you could use when
the fishing is slow to a pace that snails
seem to be on turbocharged steroids is
to retrieve in straight lines with short
stops allowing the spoon to drop at certain
intervals.

163
Why Retrieve
Pause And
Retrieve
Since fishes hit lures that are swimming by as well as
on the drop, why not drop your spoon at different areas
along your cranking line? An opportunistic fish
may take your spoon on the drop and give you a pleasant
surprise.
The reason to stop is to also allow your spoon to drop
to deeper or lower depths where fishes could be holding
out. Fishes do hang out at different water depths
depending on various circumstances such as temperature,
oxygen levels, etc. Certain fishes just hold out at
those depths.

Sometimes fishes are just too lazy to put
peddle to the metal and shoot towards
the top to hit a spoon swimming by. It’s
not their fault really. Water conditions do
have an effect on fishes and sometimes
they become lethargic. Sometimes they
just need their rest. So be kind. Send the
meal to them.
165

167
How To Do
It
Cast your spoon all the way out. Retrieve
a few feet of line and pause. Allow the
spoon to drop. Next retrieve again for
a few feet and then pause again. Repeat
this process. Of course if you’re fishing in
very snaggy areas, it is best to not pause
right at the snags. Beside it (the snag) is
good enough. Right into it is great but it
is suicidal too.

169
Summary
In circumstances where fishes are holding
low, allowing the spoon to drop will
get it to the depths where these fishes are
thus increasing your chance of catching
a fish. So, when the fishing slows down
to a halt, try pause and retrieve.

Knowledge Wise
Let’s Talk About Be
Stainless Steel Bearin

171
Philemon Foo
arings: Part 3
gs
It will not be wrong to say that
your reel has “balls of steel.” It is
literally true. Most reels come with
stainless steel bearings. I have not
seen any production reels that come
with ceramic bearings or other sort
of bearings.

173
Why Use
Stainless
Steel Bearings?
Bearings are used to reduce friction and when it comes
to fishing reels, there is a need for their use. Stainless steel
bearings are commonly used because they are able to handle
the torture dished out by the reel be it spool, handle,
etc. without breaking too easily.
Low Price
Prices of stainless steel bearings are lower than other bearings
that are suitable to be used with fishing reels. There
are really cheap stainless steel bearings that will not hesitate
turning into a ball of rust as soon as you’ve finished
your saltwater fishing expedition. Higher quality stainless
steel bearings will last much longer but they ultimately
cost more but still lower than ceramic bearings.

175
Wear And Tear
Depending on usage, stainless steel bearings can
take wear and tear pretty well. Again the words to
note here are, “depending on usage.” Stainless steel
bearings can wear off pretty fast too especially in
saltwater conditions or in fine sandy conditions.
Comparing to ceramic bearings, surface wear happens
faster.
Stainless steel as we all know can resist corrosion
pretty well but why do we still see this happening
on reel bearings even on new ones only after a day
of saltwater use and “forgetting” to wash? To be
used in fishing reels stainless steel bearing needs to
be treated with heat to strengthen them. This treatment
unfortunately reduces the ability of the stainless
steel bearing’s corrosion resistant qualities.

177
How To Make
Them Last
Longer?
On the manufacturing side steps have been done to
reduce wear and prolong bearing lifespan. One of the
things done is to shield the bearings thus we hear of
reels with shielded bearings. This shield protects the
bearings from contaminants that may enter the bearing.
Another method is to coat the bearings with protective
coating and one of these coating is ceramic which
gives bearings a much longer live span. Not to be confused
with hybrid bearings, ceramic coated bearings
refer to bearings that are coated with Activated Alumina
which is a form of ceramic.

179
What Can You
Do?
On your side what you can do to help your reel’s ball
bearings last longer is to wash them after every fishing
trip, more so if it is a saltwater fishing trip, and have
the reel service regularly. It is best to wash them once
you get back to land from sea and service them when
you get home.
Use good quality lubricant on your bearings. Good
quality lubricants will stay on longer and give longer
protection duration. They will also allow for smoother
performance. Note too that WD40 is not a lubricant
and thus should not be used to lubricate bearings. It is
a degreaser.

181
Summary
Stainless steel bearings are the most commonly used
bearings in fishing reels because of their relatively
low prices. They can take the beating dished out but
they have limits. Remember to give them extra care
and they can go the distance. If all else fails and you
are not happy, hit your bank account and have them
changed to hybrid or better still, ceramic bearings.
We’ll discuss these in future issues.

Get Your Kids Fish
Junior Anglers
An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we
experience nature, we improve
our analytical skills, we absorb
vitamins from the sun, we expend
our minds, we learn about the
environment, etc.
There are so many benefits to
fishing and we should reduce our
kids addiction to video games,
computer games, playing with
mobile devices, etc. We should get
them to interact more with our
environment and teach them a
thing or two about life and living
life.
With this in mind we hope to
encourage you to take your kid(s)
Junior Anglers
Bittersweet Month

195
By Amirul Irfan
Hello everyone!
The month of May has been quite a month for
me, as I had to focus on exams and other school
related activities. The 2015 Angling Fair which
is set to be held at the end of May kept my spirits
high, and sure enough the day has come. I’m
glad to be able to meet Mr.Phil after some time
of being online friends.

Uncle Fong introduced me to Dave Hodge, also
known as the Barefoot Fisherman. He made
some awesome trick casts and he gave me some
good tips on improving my casting. His amazing
skills caught the attention of a good crowd in no
time.
197

One of the lures I have been waiting to buy
from Berkley. This will be great for fishing
on heavy cover for snakeheads. Once the
stocks of the power pop hit our shores I
will have to buy a few. I also met another
junior angler from Azerbaijan at Pure
Fishing’s booth. I am stoked to help him
out with his fishing and I would like to
learn from him too.
199

I started the month with some micro
fishes, but a lady from the angling
fair told me that size does not matter.
Those are some good words.
201

A second striped snakehead on a
topwater pencil, roughly the same
size and same appetite. I hope it
will grow up to be a smart snakehead.
203

A chubby juvenile caught on a micro
popper that Uncle Fong gave me
during our boating trip last year. The
thrill of seeing the fish hit topwater
lures is amazing. The shallow water
from the hot days influenced my
fishing for this month. Only small
lures worked, and with small results.
205

After some rains recently I decided
to try the Rapala Skitter Pop to entice
big striped snakeheads in the flooded
grass lands, but this juvenile snakehead
wanted to try it first. The lure is
almost half the length of its body.
207

Another juvenile caught on the
Sniper Paddle Tail soft plastic. It was
hooked after many missed hooksets.
Finally, a decent snakehead of around 30cm
caught right before dark. After class I went
out for a quick session with no results. Before
leaving I tried the Surecatch Chubby
Crank with a slow paced retrieve.
I felt an aggressive take when the crankbait
was passing through a reedy area.

My younger brother scored this haruan
(stripped snakehead) on a small
popper which resembles the baitfish
that are common in the pond. Many
snakeheads managed to shake the
hook after jumping like bass.
213

I fished this Firetiger coloured
popper in grass with a medium
paced retrieve. A bulging wake
was an indicator of an incoming
hit. After missing the popper 2
times this juvenile snakehead is
hooked.
215

After releasing the snakehead above,
I continued casting at the same area.
A grassy island in the middle of
the pond. This fish fought hard despite
its size, and it tried to dive
into weeds as much as it could.
217

Decent snakehead on the Surecatch
Chubby crankbait and the Surecatch
D-Legend rod. This fish literally hit
the crankbait at my feet, and I was
lucky the rod tip was soft enough to
allow the fish to make a short run.
219

221
Catch and release as usual, it’s crucial
for our sport. The holidays have just
begun and I hope everyone reading
this has a great and safe holiday.
Stay safe
Tight lines & Happy fishing
