Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 2We need bids for Ymir! Gaelan will spike the event, but we do need bids. If you have any interest but have neverdone anything like this, never fear – experienced autocrats are willing to help.Oshi issued a WoW challenge – every barony has been challenged to enter 2 Wings champions – to cook chickenwings, that is.The next Baronial practice & meeting will be July 15 th .We have been approached by TJ (who ran the Celtic Music Festival for many years) who wants to do a Celtic HeritageFestival with several non-profit organizations. He is trying to find out if we have any interest in being involved. At the CMF we normally set up a tent, do demos, drink and eat a lot. Support can be several things – we’ll lend thetent, or we’ll demo, or we’ll come out and help with it. Is there interest? After some discussion, we decided to reportsome interest, depending on the date and what they want us to do.We did paperwork for 1 renewal, 1 transfer, 5 new heavy and 4 new rapier authorizations during fighter practice today!Officer ReportsExchequer: Tréphine is stepping up to stand again as Exchequer until someone volunteers to take over forHelwynn. She didn’t have numbers for the balance amounts yet. Note that this is a temporary assignment – theBaronage still seeks an Exchequer.Quartermaster: (Ulfr) The pavilion was returned last week. We did the inventory, thanks to all who assisted withthat effort. A report will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.Chatelaine: (Sajah) Thanks to Margaret and Tracy, we have a lot of loaner clothing for newcomers – we are goingto leave it in the Fayetteville area, which tends to have a lot of newcomers due to military transfers. We have ademo in Elvegast on July 26 th at the library.Herald: absentKnight Marshall: (Rufus) We had fighting and authorizations today. We are looking forward to doing this againnext month. An email will be coming out on the Marshals list reminding them that we need quarterly reports the 1 stweek in July. I will not be able to be at the July Baronial meeting. We discussed West Harnett HS as an alternatesite, but we have not been able to check into that yet. Lighted fields are available for about $20 for the full day, which would be great in winter when it gets dark early.Minister of Youth: (Margaret) I am planning to meet with Emi, to get all the materials needed. If you are having anevent and want youth activities, contact Margaret. SCAdians do have children! Let’s help them enjoy events asmuch as we do!Archery Marshall: absentRapier Marshall: (Einar) We had 4 authorizations today (one of them also authorized in heavy). Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 3Chronicler: (Jdeke) The Windlore was published on June 1 st . Sometimes after it has been announced, I getsome feedback from various folks. This time – nothing. Is anyone reading it? (pout) Sunneva requested that Iput a link to it at the top of the announcement email, to make it easier to find it. I will do that. Baroness Adrianaasked if anyone could tell her what the subject was of the article she wrote in the June Windlore. Silence… Alot of information is provided in the Windlore and I strive to make it interesting. Feedback is good, as are submissionsfor publications! OK, whine over, cheese coming!Webminister: absentEquestrian: (Fillipo) We are having another equestrian practice the weekend of July 21 st . Saturday is openbarn, and Sunday will also be open to heavy and rapier fighters. Practice is held in Cameron at 331 MarchRoad. That is the weekend before everyone goes to Pennsic, so it is a good opportunity for a last baronial practicebefore the wars!Canton ReportsAttilium: We meet here (Honeycutt Park) on Thursdays in the building from 7-9pm and go out for dinner afterwards.1 st and 3 rd are social, 2 nd is business, 4 th is A&S. Fighter practice is also held here, on Sundays and A&Shappens at that time also. We will be doing the Ft Bragg demo again, and we hope to get your support for thatagain. It will be the weekend of the 15 th of September (the weekend before MATO). Information has been postedto the list for those who want to camp at that demo event. Contact Bumba in advance, if you want to stay inthe cabins, so that we can arrange that.Buckston-On-Eno: Meetings will be on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday next month.Elvegast: We have accepted the bid from Freya for ToF5 next year, and the event has been spiked. The bidhas now gone to Attilium for review.Kappellenberg: Meetings are on Mondays, and heavy practice every other Tuesday when it is not rained out.If you want to come to that, let Wistric know to get on the list for rain check and other change notices.Nimenefeld: The meeting schedule is still the same. We are beginning to prepare for MATO in September (21st– 23 rd ).OtherThere is nothing new on the Fall Crown Tourney. The staff is set, and the event site was updated yesterday. The feast will be Russian. This occurs on the first weekend in November, at Optimist Farm.WE NEED BIDS FOR YMIR – Sooner rather than later, it is not that far out. If you have not been autocrat for anevent before, don’t hesitate – there are lots of people who are willing to help.It is good to see Sir Edwin here!Fighters - You have been through the Rapier Gate today. You will see it again at Pennsic. The first person whotells Bumba where it was will get a six-pack of beer.Northern archery practice is back to Monday nights 5-7.One of the problems the Barony currently has is that, although we have multiple ways of communicating, peoplemiss news and info anyway. We actually have too many ways to communicate! We are trying to keep everythingupdated on the Windmasters’ Hill website. If you need to keep your specialized lists, we suggest that whenyou send out a change notice to a special sub-list, you send it to the Keep also. The meeting closed at 6:09.The next meeting will be held on July 15th at 5pm at Carolina Pines, preceded by fighter practice and A&Sopportunities.

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 5The Duelist Melee HandbookKilling CupIn a situation where a door or opening to a protected area is present, the unit should form a formationknown as the killing cup. The unit commander should be placed in the middle of the cup far enoughfrom the reach of the opponent weapon but close enough to maintain order of the troops present. TheUnit commander should also be fluid and able to move in and out of the cup as needed. If the Commanderneeds to leave the cup for any reason the other members of the cup should fill in this place asthere will be a short opening that the opposing unit may break through.Killing Cup CounterIf a killing cup is formed on the inside of a protected area the opposing Unit Commander and his number1 and 2 man stack on the door. His 4 and 5 man are harassers. It is the 4 and 5 mans job to kill a personin the killing cup. In order to create an opening for the stacked men to drive through, the numberone man will push all the way to the opposite wall and move directly to the opposite corner . The number2 man will move in directly after, and make an immediate U-turn and drive down the wall he is on.The Unit Commander will rush up the gut of the killing cup. 4 will follow the pattern of 1, and 5 willfollow the pattern of 2. The trick to breaking a killing cup is continuous movement forward. If a persondies that person needs to fall forward fouling the enemies swords on his way down to help his unit tobreak the killing cup.

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 6Run the RightIn the event a line unit meets an enemy line unit in the open field the friendly line will advance until theopposing unit is approximately a sword and a half length away. The Unit Commander will then call “Runthe Right”, at which time the man furthest on the right will move out . The lead man will run around theback side of the man on the right hand side of the opposing formation, staying just outside of engagement. The rest of the unit should follow the lead man. This tactic should be used to envelop the opposingunit onto itself if done correctly.Run the LeftIn the event a line unit meets an enemy line unit in the open field the friendly line will advance until theopposing unit is approximately a sword and a half length away. The Unit Commander will then call “Runthe Left”, at which time the man furthest on the right will move out . The lead man will run around theback side of the man on the left hand side of the opposing formation, staying just outside of engagement. The rest of the unit should follow the lead man. This tactic should be used to envelop the opposing unitonto itself if done correctly.

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 7Pin-WheelingA unit should pinwheel in the event thatthe opposing unit is trying to run eitherside of their formation. This countermovementis a good deterrent and tendsto wear on the opposing unit’s staminaand morale while keeping unit integrity .Rally/Form a LineAt any time on the field, anyone can call theformation to Rally and re-form. When you hear“Rally” if possible you should quickly get tothe person that called for it and assist them.Normally when a person calls Rally they arepotentially getting out-numbered.Sweep and KillThis is a tactic that should be discussed before the battle happens. In this tactic alternating on memberof the line should sweep and disrupt the opponents blades while the next member of the line should betrying to kill the person in front of the and the person adjacent to them as well. This tactic works greatin coordination with the tactic below.Breaking or Rushing a LineBreaking and Rushing a line is done upon engagement when one member of the friendly force injures orkills one member of the opposing force. It is a very quick tactic and can happen at any time. Once amember of the opposing force is at a disadvantage such as injured or killed someone from the friendlyforce calls “Break the Line.” At this point the person making the call moves through the line with therest of the team funneling in behind him.

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 8Splitting the ForceSplitting the Force is a good tactic if done correctly. Both units should have engagement. When the commander calls for the split thefriendly line should separate as evenly as possibleand gain a flanking position on the enemyline. Once flanking positions are gained theCommander should call for an inward push—this will push the flanked unit together, disruptingtheir line and gaining complete advantage.Runner OutBefore the bout the Unit Commander mustpick the fastest and most proficient memberof the line to make this work. Once engagementis gained the Commander will call forhis runner. At that time the runner will breakoff and move to the rear of the enemies lineand harass them from the rear. At the sametime the main body will shift or spread tocover the area of the lost member.Small Unit SkirmishesIn a small unit you are not looking to attack lines of troops. You are looking for the members of the opposingunit to break off, and then you move in for the attack. The tempo of these attacks should be fast, and the unit should quickly move on. In this formation, the two members of the friendly line should bemoving side by side just out of engagement. One member should fall back and change position. Uponreaching the engagement area, the members should separate further to flank the one opponent. Themovement of the unit should confuse the opposition and the friendly unit should attack during the confusion.Written and Submitted by: Fillipo Clemente degli Esposti

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 9AROUND THE BARONYAttillium has enjoyed a growth of new members and in concert with that growth new fighters aswell. Our group collectively decided to create a serious learning environment with an effort to“rehab” old loaner armor and get it into the hands of those new fighters. One of the first myths wehad to dispel was that our fun sport is “expensive”. The Canton of Attillium had an armor workshopthat used plastic covered by leather, fashioned chain-mail, shields and swords. This effort wasdone WITH the prospective member and a sort of nurturing relationship had begun…We then focused on training and technique… all the while we moved toward a more accessible locationwith plenty of visibility to our returning soldiers and students at FTCC… yet still a wellthought-out training plan was developed.Keeping in mind the following:The object of practicing anything is to improve oneself. No one practices at being mediocre or bad at anything.Fighting in the SCA is no different than any other sport. To get better, one has to practice. ...............................Often-times fighters will attend Fighter Practice without a game plan or without a goal to attain or aspecific "something" to learn. They walk out onto the field and select someone to "play" with. Frequentlythey pick the same person over and over. They exchange blows until both are tired andthen they rest. There is little exchange of ideas. No actual instruction or learning. Bad habits are notcorrected. Comments on various armor and weapons are not made. New ways of accomplishingobjectives are not discussed. In a nutshell, they simply practice only that which they already knew(good or bad) without making progress. Our first official fighter practice at Honeycutt Park was June 3 rd , 2012. We devoted our training to:Toe to Toe technique. This Drill is accomplished "Round Robin" style. The two fighters stand facing each other so thatthey are within perfect sword range. A mark is made on the ground (flour works well or a stick canbe placed) where their forward foot toes are to be placed. The fighters are not allowed to move theirforward foot at all or to move their back foot ahead of the foot on the mark. At the call "Lay On" thefirst fighter to connect with a good blow is the victor. The victor then in turn fights all other fighterswith their toes on the mark until he loses and the victor of that bout becomes the "Robin". The purposeof this Drill is to teach the fighter to hold his ground and not retreat. On June 10 th , 2012 we devoted our training to a standard: The Bear pit technique. This Drill is performed in a Bear Pit. A circle is drawn on the ground (flour works best for this) andboth fighters MUST stay within the circle. Other fighters or observers call out a fighter's name if hegets within one foot of the edge. The size of the Bear Pit is dependent upon the skill of the fightersin fighting in close quarters. As their experience grows, the size of the Bear Pit should shrink. Theobject is not to push a fighter out of the pit or to have him to accidentally step out of it, but to teachfighters how to fight in a confined area, remain on the offensive and not "run backwards".

Volume 41, Issue 7 Page 10On June 24 th , 2012 we devoted our training to: Group Critique technique. This Drill requires the fighter to engage each person at fighter practice for one or two bouts. Afterhe has engaged them all, the fighter's opponents are to critique him one at a time in the group thatfought him. They are to give both positive and negative feedback. All negative feedback MUST bedone with a suggestion of what could be done better or different. This drill teaches the fighters toverbalize their thoughts and provides for positive reinforcementOn July 1 st , 2012 we will devote our training to: The Off Hand technique. Most people are either right or left handed. Even those who are ambidextrous tend to have a dominanthand. For this Drill the fighter is to fight with his off-hand. His opponent is to fight with his dominanthand. This drill allows a fighter to develop his off-hand skills while enabling him to retain use ofhis shield. On July 15 th , 2012 we will devote our training to: Back Peddling technique. At one time or another a fighter will engage someone who remains on the offensive due to skill orsheer size. This Drill gives a fighter practice on fighting while "advancing backwards". The fightercan only move his feet backwards, sideways or completely turn around. He cannot take any stepsforward. His opponent can move in any direction. This Drill teaches a fighter to have confidence inhis ability even if it appears that he is on the defensive or has been overpowered.Having structured practices prepares our fighters, new and old, for any challenge and preparesthem for individual advancement as well.In Obscurum nos fio lux LuciosWith Warmest Regards I Remain ...Lord Alain de La Rochelle, Squire to Sir Rodrigo Falcone
