Dress for “green day.” Foundations Yearkicks <strong>of</strong>f the Associate <strong>of</strong> Fine <strong>Art</strong>s Degree Program.


All students begin with a core group <strong>of</strong>courses that develop visual literacy <strong>and</strong>basic studio techniques <strong>and</strong> emphasize anunderst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the concepts <strong>and</strong> principles<strong>of</strong> the visual arts. Course schedules aredivided between liberal arts courses <strong>and</strong>studio courses which use materials, concepts<strong>and</strong> skills that students can apply to theirchosen area <strong>of</strong> study in the second year. Inthe first semester, each student is introducedto DCAD’s six majors through FoundationSeminar, a course split into two-weeksections allowing for all new students to learnmore about each area <strong>of</strong> study. Fine <strong>Art</strong>s studentsexplore drawing, painting,printmaking <strong>and</strong> mixed media.Creative expression <strong>and</strong> effectivecommunication are fostered by a solidfoundation <strong>of</strong> work from observation<strong>and</strong> perception. Studio work <strong>and</strong>frequent feedback from faculty <strong>and</strong>visiting artists nurture student artisticaccomplishments. Students learnhow form <strong>and</strong> content in a work <strong>of</strong> artinteract to yield meaning. In addition,group discussion, lectures, seminars<strong>and</strong> individual consultations withfaculty <strong>and</strong> visiting artists, develop thetechnical ability, critical awareness,knowledge <strong>of</strong> historical frameworks,<strong>and</strong> self-discipline to form a unique,personal vision. Fine <strong>Art</strong>s majors takefrequent trips to museums, galleries,<strong>and</strong> artists’ studios to further enhancethe lessons learned in the studio.

Illustrators illuminate<strong>and</strong> attract attentionto an idea, story orproduct through theircreative designs.DCAD illustrations students develop<strong>and</strong> sharpen skills that enable themto visually communicate ideas <strong>and</strong>interpret a narrative effectively. Theprogram encompasses training <strong>of</strong> theh<strong>and</strong>, eye, <strong>and</strong> mind. Students aretaught to become creative problemsolvers <strong>and</strong> visual narrators, exploringideas from thorough research. Studiowork from sketches to finished artmay be drawn, painted, or createdon a computer. Photographic images are everywherein everyday life, ranging from thecommercial to the photo-journalisticto the purely artistic. Working witha faculty <strong>of</strong> practicing pr<strong>of</strong>essionals,students in the Photography program explore technical& aesthetic possibilities while developing their owncreative vision. As students gain technical knowledgein the medium, they are also exposed to historical<strong>and</strong> contemporary photographers works as they beginto explore their own aesthetic <strong>and</strong> personal choices.This grounding in techniques, tools, <strong>and</strong> intellectualstimulation leads students to the freedom to createtheir own powerful, meaningful images.

DCAD Photographers havegone on to great things like:l<strong>and</strong> an internship at the NewYork Post, Paper magazine <strong>and</strong>Pier 59 Digital Studios; transferto four-year programs as faraway as Parsons Paris; work ina gallery like Blue Sky Galleryin Portl<strong>and</strong>, Oregon; started ananalog color photography lab;explore the art <strong>of</strong> photograms<strong>and</strong> developing a photographwithout a camera.


AdmissionsThe DCAD admissions staff is excited to help you through the applicationprocess including <strong>of</strong>fering advice on how to prepare a portfolio. At DCAD,we look at each applicant independently, on the basis <strong>of</strong> an academicrecord, <strong>and</strong> more importantly, on the potential we see in your portfolio.We know that students learn best when they are given caring, personalattention, <strong>and</strong> our admissions counselors start your DCAD experience withone-to-one communication from friendly reminders to on-campus portfolioreviews. At all levels, we get to know each <strong>of</strong> our students personally. Wehope you will take a moment to get to know DCAD.ApplicationTo begin the process, submit a DCAD Application, available online at www.dcad.edu/apply or in the Admissions supplement to this view book. There isa $40 application fee; $80 for international students. For students requestingan application fee waiver, please contact your high school counselor or theDCAD Admissions Office.PortfolioAll applicants are encouraged to visit the <strong>College</strong> in person for a portfolioreview <strong>and</strong> tour <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>. Applicants who cannot visit in person mayforward a digital portfolio to the DCAD Admissions Office. A portfolio <strong>of</strong>artwork is required for admission to DCAD’s Associate <strong>of</strong> Fine <strong>Art</strong>s DegreeProgram. Applicants must demonstrate their ability in the areas <strong>of</strong> drawing,composition, color <strong>and</strong> design, <strong>and</strong> select their best artwork completedwithin the last two years. The portfolio should include 15 to 20 pieces <strong>of</strong>original artwork <strong>and</strong> at least five pieces drawn from direct observation.The balance <strong>of</strong> the portfolio can include artwork in various media <strong>and</strong> styles.This might include pastel, pen <strong>and</strong> ink, watercolor, oil or acrylic paint,animation, film, <strong>and</strong> black <strong>and</strong> white or color photography. Applicantsare also encouraged to bring their sketchbook. If submitting 3-D worksuch as sculpture or ceramics, please bring photographs instead <strong>of</strong> theactual work to prevent damage. Remember to limit the portfolio to amaximum <strong>of</strong> 20 pieces.


SlideroomApplicants who are unable to arrange a personal portfolio review at DCAD,may also submit their portfolio by downloading their images to DCAD’sSlideroom account. For a $10 fee, Slideroom allows the applicant to submitup to 20 still images, or a combination <strong>of</strong> still images <strong>and</strong> video.High School TranscriptsOfficial High School transcripts or GED must be sent to the DCADAdmissions Office for admission consideration. A final high school transcriptwith graduation date or equivalent is required prior to entering DCAD.SAT or ACT ScoresThe submission <strong>of</strong> SAT or ACT scores, though not required, is highlyrecommended. Applicants should ensure that all st<strong>and</strong>ardized testscores (SAT or ACT), if available, are included with their transcripts.DCAD’s CEEB code is 5161.<strong>College</strong> TranscriptsStudents who have completed college courses must forward <strong>of</strong>ficialtranscripts from all colleges attended, whether or not they think the creditis transferable. Equivalent courses completed with a “C” grade or higherat accredited colleges or universities will be reviewed <strong>and</strong> evaluated fortransfer credit into the DCAD curriculum.Rolling Admissions DeadlineDCAD <strong>of</strong>fers an Early Action Application deadline <strong>of</strong> December 1,for students requesting to receive an admission decision prior to January 1<strong>of</strong> their senior year. To be considered for DCAD’s Merit-Based Scholarships,applications must be completed by March 15 for the fall semester <strong>and</strong>December 1 for the spring semester. Applicants applying after this deadlineare considered through a rolling admission policy up until two weeks priorto the start <strong>of</strong> a semester. On occasion, DCAD will institute a wait-list <strong>of</strong>accepted students <strong>and</strong> determine enrollment on a space-available basis.Students who decide to attend DCAD must submit a tuition deposit bythe universal deposit deadline <strong>of</strong> May 1. Deposits are refundable prior toMay 1. Students requesting housing must also submit a deposit to securea space in DCAD housing. In most cases, admissions decisions aredelivered by mail within a two- to three-week time frame from the date<strong>of</strong> application completion.


International StudentsThe diverse student population <strong>and</strong> surrounding area is ideal for studentsstudying from abroad. Students from overseas find the small classes <strong>and</strong>friendly environment ideal to maximize artistic achievement <strong>and</strong> success.The rolling admissions policy is also in effect for international applicants,however for Merit-Based Scholarship consideration, all materials must besubmitted by March 15 for the fall semester or December 1 for the springsemester. Non-U.S. citizens living abroad are encouraged to contact DCADto learn more about the admissions process. In addition to the applicationmaterials indicated above, international students must also supply certifiedEnglish translations <strong>of</strong> all their academic records <strong>and</strong> TOEFL scores.TOEFLInternational students, whose first language is not English, must submitTOEFL results (Test <strong>of</strong> English as a Foreign Language). A minimum score<strong>of</strong> 79 IBT is required for acceptance to DCAD. Specify DCAD’s school code<strong>of</strong> 5443 for TOEFL score reporting. The TOEFL requirement may be waivedfor students successfully completing college-level English compositionat an accredited U.S. college or university, if a student’s only language <strong>of</strong>instruction has been English for three or more years, or where a student hasa minimum verbal score <strong>of</strong> 500 on the SAT.Studying EnglishDCAD <strong>of</strong>fers a Conditional Acceptance to students who do not meetthe TOEFL score requirement <strong>of</strong> 79 IBT. DCAD has partnered with ELSLanguage Centers <strong>and</strong> accepts successful completion <strong>of</strong> Level 109 inan English Language Program <strong>of</strong>fered by anyone <strong>of</strong> more than 32 ELSLanguage Centers located throughout the USA. Scholarships <strong>and</strong> Financial AidDCAD Merit-Based ScholarshipMerit-Based Scholarships <strong>of</strong> up to $8,000 per year are awarded based on anapplicant’s academic <strong>and</strong> artistic skill at the time <strong>of</strong> acceptance to the <strong>College</strong>.The deadline to be considered for a Merit-Based Scholarship is March15 for the fall semester <strong>and</strong> December 1 for the spring semester. Scholarshipsare renewable for a student’s second year as long as he or she maintainsfull-time status <strong>and</strong> satisfactory academic st<strong>and</strong>ing.DCAD <strong>Art</strong> Award ScholarshipEach year, one $5,000 tuition scholarship, renewable for the second year <strong>of</strong>study is available to <strong>Delaware</strong> high school seniors who intend to enroll atDCAD. <strong>Delaware</strong> residents enrolled as a high school senior or home-schoolequivalent with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale are eligible toapply. The deadline to apply is April 1 <strong>and</strong> applicants may request an applicationfrom the DCAD Admissions Office or from their high school art teacherafter January 1 <strong>of</strong> their senior year.James P. Lecky Presidential ScholarshipThe James P. Lecky Presidential Scholarship is awarded to an accepted fulltimestudent who demonstrates outst<strong>and</strong>ing academic <strong>and</strong> artistic ability,<strong>and</strong> financial need. The scholarship is automatically renewed for a secondyear <strong>of</strong> full-time enrollment as long as the student maintains a minimumcumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.7 <strong>and</strong> demonstrates continued financial need.High School <strong>Art</strong> Exhibition ScholarshipEach spring, the DCAD Admissions Office hosts an annual exhibition <strong>of</strong>juried high school student artwork selected by each student’s art teachers.Pieces submitted by high school seniors are reviewed <strong>and</strong> the scholarshiprecipients receive a partial DCAD tuition scholarship.Financial AidStudents <strong>and</strong> their families may be eligible for a wide range <strong>of</strong> financial aidopportunities including school-supported scholarships <strong>and</strong> grants, government<strong>and</strong> private grants, <strong>and</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> public <strong>and</strong> private loan programs.DCAD <strong>of</strong>fers financial aid in the form <strong>of</strong> college need-based grants, federal<strong>and</strong> state grants, loans <strong>and</strong> work study. Students must submit the Free Applicationfor Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for various forms<strong>of</strong> federal financial aid. The FAFSA determines the amount <strong>and</strong> what type <strong>of</strong>financial aid a student may receive. DCAD encourages students to submitthe FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1.
