(HAUS) activities have grown since its founding in Oct

Dear Alumni,

New York, 2010

As you are aware, the Heidelberg Alumni U.S. (HAUS) activities have grown since its founding in

October, 2008. HAUS membership has developed and Regional Chapters are being founded throughout

the land. Our gains are due to you, who have studied, researched or worked at our Uni on the Neckar.

Ruperto-Carola has most likely given you much. For many alumni, the time spent in Heidelberg changed

lives, forged careers and created deep and lasting friendships, as well as ties to the university and city.

Now HAUS and Heidelberg University would like your help with an important project. Renovation work

began in early September 2009 on the “Neue Universität” located on the Uniplatz. This main lecture hall

building was erected between 1930 and 1931 and has long needed renovation and technological updating

and will get a complete makeover. This undertaking, named for the motto over the entrance to the

building: “Dem Lebendigen Geist,” is expected to require more than €11 million or some $15 million by

its completion in time for the 625 th anniversary of the University’s founding in June 2011.

80 years ago, the “Neue Universität” was entirely financed through generous American financial support

organized by the then US ambassador to Berlin, Jacob Gould Schurman. In keeping up with this

transatlantic spirit, HAUS has decided to support the new fundraising effort. As its part of the renovation

puzzle, HAUS will sponsor Hörsaal 14, opposite the Neue Aula, in the name of the American Alumni

Organization. Our fundraising goal for its renovation and modernization is $250.000+.

It is, then, with high expectations that we, as your fellow alumni, ask for your generous donation to piece

our puzzle together. Please send your tax deductible gift to Heidelberg University Association, 871

United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017. (Heidelberg University Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

organization). Let us thank you in advance for joining in this important fundraising effort and for adding

your part to the puzzle. We promise to keep you updated on the success. HAUS is inviting you to join the

U.S. alumni traveling to Heidelberg in June 2011 for the anniversary celebrations and reopening of the

“Neue Universität” and our HAUS lecture hall.

SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN “DEM LEBENDIGEN GEIST”

Please support the “Dem lebendigen Geist. Neue Universität 2011+” initiative. Your pledge is vital to helping the Universität Heidelberg

renovate the “Neue Universität” complex, bringing it into the 21st century. Every contribution helps, no matter how large or small. The

construction of the “Neue Universität” complex was first made possible through the donations of Americans. It is true to this day: only

through the commitment of many will we be able to reach our goal.
