THE FISHKILL – PART 1A Short Story byF. W. Belland“ We want yourA Concrete Restoration Company, specializing in concrete repair and painting.305-294-9119 • 1700 N RooseveltBing waited on the boat. Hope filled his soul theway wind fills the sail on a Key West mullet skiff. Slowand shimmery in the beginning, the hope crept intohis heart and ballooned it out so he thought it mightburst. It’d knocked Bing flat when the magistrate gavePapadad ninety days in the stockade for being drunk, but that was then and as time drew on the hope for hisfather rustled and became alive so now he could barelykeep it all in.Maybe the ninety days were best for Papadad, theboy thought. When he came out, came home, helooked good. His face was firm and healthy and hewalked all springy and energetic the way Bing liked.Because he was small for a nine year old, Bingclimbed up on the engine box so he could see Papadadwalking toward the dock from across the dirt parkinglot. Papadad walked from the Bluelights Caféand carried a paper sack. Bing guessed Papadad hadbought a bottle of whisky for their fishing trip but thatwas all right. Bing knew his great hope would carrythem. They would get to fishing good on the reef andPapadad would be too busy to drink much whisky. Alittle whisky was okay, Bing decided. And his hope wassuch that he felt he could will the old man to drink justa little. And maybe some beers too, for Bing had founda case of longnecks under the thick blanket of shavedice in the fish box.Galilee tipped with Papadad’s weight as the old manstepped from the dock to the gunwale and down intothe cockpit. Papadad named the boat Galilee whenhe’d been Bible reading and a member of the Pentecostals. He quit the Pentecostals but kept the namepainted on the stern and Bing liked it fine. It had agood sound and Bing thought if it came from the Bibleit was a lucky name.“We ready, boy?” Papadad stood outside the lineof shadow cut by the cabin roof. He looked big andgrand in the sunlight. His cap was on straight andhe’d creased the bill like a ballplayer. Bing could havehugged him, but said, “We’re ready.”Papadad stooped when he came out of the sun andinto the overhang. Bing felt proud that his old manwas so big.“Let’s get her started, son.”Bing helped Papadad pull back the heavy cover tothe engine well. They squatted over the four cylinderGrey. The Grey was old and ugly, crouched on itsmountings in the bilge. Papadad didn’t like the engine. He called it a hard starter and Bing was scared to deathof the big iron fly wheel with its sharp teeth. That flywheel could flat tear your arm off. Papadad openedthe fuel line and Bing watched honey colored gasolinefill the glass fuel ball. The old man cleaned the distributorcap with a rag and wasn’t scared of anything.Papadad inserted the handle into the flywheel andstrained to pull it around. He grinned up at Bing, hisbeefy face big and happy. He winked.“You want to spin it, son?” Bing loved it whenPapadad kidded. Papadad was a great kidder.“I ain’t man enough yet, Papadad. You know that.”“Well, someday you’ll be man enough. You will, won’t you?”“Yes, Papadad. Some day.”The veins knotted up in Papadad’s great arms. Hegave the wheel a tremendous wrench, once, twice; theengine coughed, caught, banged and caught again. Itroared until Papadad eased back on the choke. Bluesmoke wafted over them and Papadad kept grinning athis son. Together they replaced the cover and the Greymade a pleasant humming under their feet.“Cast off, boy.”It was cool on the water. Cold even. Darned cold,Bing thought. But he didn’t mind it. Papadad idledout to the middle of the channel. Bing watched howthe chilly wind ruffled at the bits of hair which stoodout from under Papadad’s cap, and how, in the wintersun he could see the beard stubble defined over hischeek. Without speaking, Papadad fished out twojackets from the gear locker and handed one to Bing.Bing dove into its warmth and faced the sun just likePapadad. It was wonderful.“Boy,” Papadad said. “Fetch me one of them longnecksfrom under the ice. And the opener.” Bingpushed himself off the side of the boat where he’dbeen leaning.“All right,” he told his father. The great stone ledge near the reef lay a few milesout and to the west. Bing could see the Gulf Streamrunning hard blue beyond. The ball of sun had anhour’s time left above the horizon when Papadadloosed the grapnel. He shut down the engine.Bing and his father rigged the hand lines. Thecold got worse and with the sun going down it gotworse still.Galilee rested bow to the wind, tide trailing offthe stern. In the last of the sunlight Bing staredhard into the surface of the water. Forty feet downhe saw the schools of mangrove snapper. He tosseda handful of salted glass minnows overboard. Thewater eddied around them, clear, and you could seethe silver bits of glass minnow spiral down. Bingand Papadad watched the fish rise to the bait, thenalmost as if they had one mind they shied away andsettled back in a lethargy. Papadad stood silent thensaid:“I’ll be damned. Never seen them turn away fromglass minnows.” He scratched under his cap tippingthe rim forward. “Maybe it’s the cold. Never seen itget this cold south of Miami. And hell it’s cold.” Hedrained off his beer. “Fetch the lantern, Bing.”Papadad fired the lantern and he and Bing casttheir lines over. The sun went. Again the fish rosein a cloud, turned and fell back toward the bottomwithout taking the baits. In the cold light of thelantern, Papadad stared into the water and drankat another beer. He screwed his face up and keptstaring even when it became too dark to see the fish. They both put on rubber slickers over their jacketsagainst the night. The cold came still and sharplike metal and Bing felt it creep into the holes of hisjacket sleeves and up the flesh of his arms. Papadadbrooded and finally went forward for his whisky.“I never seen the like, boy. I wish we had us athermometer.” He drank from the whisky bottle, then the beer bottle, and shuddered when he swallowed.“I’ll bet it’s close to freezing. Almost.” Hedrank again. Astern the trailing lines dripped daggersof phosphorescence among the bits of chum.No fish rose. The water stretched flat under theicy stars. The clarity of the sky made Bing shiver.Papadad put his arm around the boy. The rubber oftheir slickers made a creaky sound and Bing smelledthe sweet whisky on Papadad’s breath where it camewarm on his cheek. “Best you go forward, boy.Cuddle yourself up in the bunk for a spell.”“I better stay with you, Papadad. What if the fishstart biting?” The old man laughed, not unkindly.“Go do like I say, Bing. I’ll come for you if there’sfish.”Bing did as he was told. He felt he ought to stayup with Papadad, fish or no. But the closeness ofthe cabin felt good. He crawled into the bunk andpulled a salty smelling army blanket over himself.Maybe he would call out to Papadad once in a whileso he wouldn’t be alone with the whisky. In hiswarmth Bing caused himself to not think of whiskydrinking and thought instead of a yacht all varnishedand bright and the thought became a dream- he and Papadad owned the yacht and pilotedthemselves all the way to England or maybe Chinalike in a book. It would be grand. Then for a longtime Bing dreamed nothing.“Bing. Bing!” The boat was turned. They wereoff the stone ledge. Bing could feel it.“We’re off the ledge,” he said to the darkness.“I know.” Papadad was breathless, excited. “Islipped the anchor when I saw what I saw. We’redrifting landward.” He wavered unsteadily in thegloom of the cabin. The gas lantern had gone outand the sliver of moon was well up. It looked closeto daybreak. “For god sake, come on, boy.”To be continued next week, October 10th.This is a selection from the upcoming collection of shortstories by F.W. Belland and Chris Belland, entitled“Almost Havana”.

If you havenever been, it is one place in theUnited States you might wantto see. It is an extraordinarilybeautiful island that was once thecenter of the universe because ofwhaling. The Indians started itbut the shrewd Yankee Quakersmade it into pretty much a globalbusiness. The island is not onlybeautiful but the architecture ofthe homes that were built therefrom the profits of whaling madeit one of the most spectacularlyunique places in the UnitedStates. As I have written many timesbefore, I feel very much the sameway about Key West, but for differentreasons. We have a sharedhistory of aboriginal inhabitants,an early history of great wealth, great architecture and, of course, being an island, but no two placescan be the same. Both the islandof Nantucket and Key West arecertainly nothing less than nationaltreasures. What interested me a greatdeal in Nantucket, however, wasnot the weather, the beauty of theplace or the architecture but theemerged and mature industryof property maintenance. Nowthere is a strange topic for anop-ed piece. In fact, many of theglossy local magazines had biographiesof the many landscapedesign folks on the island. Thephotographs and the way theywere written made them soundlike highlypaid “rockstars” of theirworld. Giventhe manicuredlookof most ofthe homes inNantucket, Ican only surmiseit is true.Of course, Iam one whois alwaysamazed whena restauranttells me they“can’t get mein for anothertwo hours”on a weekday night or that adoctor cannot see me for severalweeks. When I first came to KeyWest, as far as I know, there wasonly one guy who did swimmingpools. He was known asJohn The Pool Guy. I know thisbecause when I came here in1973 I put in one of the very fewpools on the island and becameintimately acquainted with theservices of John The Pool Guy. Acouple of small nurseries cameand went but that was about theextent of it. Today, everywhere Ilook, there is another landscapingcompany in a bright, shinynew truck plying the streets ofKey West. Of course, these are inconcert with the legions of homerestoration companies, paintingcontractors and, of course, plumbers and electricians. Everywhereyou look in Key West, somebody is painting, fixing up,planting and generally pouringbuckets of money into their KeyWest homes. Good for them andgood for us.Key West probably has one ofthe largest collections of homes oftheir architectural genre than anyother place I know. Certainly, owning a 19th century home, especially a wooden one, in thetropics has to be the ultimate antiquebut it takes a lot of care and,you guessed it, money. It has been an amazing thingto watch the transformation ofhomes a lot of people didn’t feelwere worth much into the milliondollar mansions they are today. Iwish I had bought a couple whenI could.
