Teachers share a significant responsibility <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>gyoung people to lead successful and productivelives. There is a large body of evidence that suggestsa teacher’s effectiveness has a powerful impact onstudents, 1 with broad consensus that teacher quality is<strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle most important <strong>in</strong>-school factor <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>gstudent achievement. 2The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals forYoung Australians, 3 asserts that improv<strong>in</strong>g teacherquality is an essential reform as part of Australia’s effortsto improve student atta<strong>in</strong>ment and ensure it has a worldclass system of education.‘The greatest resource <strong>in</strong> Australian schools isour teachers. They account for <strong>the</strong> vast majority ofexpenditure <strong>in</strong> school education and have <strong>the</strong> greatestimpact on student learn<strong>in</strong>g, far outweigh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impactof any o<strong>the</strong>r education program or policy’. 4The best educators are <strong>the</strong> best learners and alleducators should take responsibility to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> an openand curious m<strong>in</strong>d and to constantly push <strong>the</strong>mselvesto be <strong>the</strong> best <strong>the</strong>y can be. Nurtur<strong>in</strong>g a vibrant learn<strong>in</strong>gculture requires opportunities and commitment forlearn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all parts of <strong>the</strong> system. We all can, andshould, learn from our colleagues, system leaders,education experts and focus on <strong>the</strong> evidence of <strong>the</strong>impact of our learn<strong>in</strong>g on students.The <strong>Professional</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Convention</strong> is an excit<strong>in</strong>gopportunity for teachers across Australia to cometoge<strong>the</strong>r with more than 500 of <strong>the</strong>ir peers to engagewith national and <strong>in</strong>ternational speakers and <strong>the</strong> 2011Australian Primary Teacher of <strong>the</strong> Year to promote <strong>the</strong>importance of effective teach<strong>in</strong>g and its impact onstudent learn<strong>in</strong>g. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, participants will <strong>in</strong>terrogate<strong>the</strong> challenges and opportunities for teachers offered by<strong>the</strong> National <strong>Professional</strong> Standards for Teachers andexplore strategies for professional learn<strong>in</strong>g.This is a unique opportunity for teachers across Australiato learn about and share ideas and approaches toeffective practice for 21st century education both dur<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> convention and beyond.Toge<strong>the</strong>r, we can establish a community across Australiafocused on professional practices and supportivelearn<strong>in</strong>g environments for teachers that improveoutcomes for all young Australians.Organisation of <strong>the</strong> conventionThe convention will be held over two days.The first day is a by-<strong>in</strong>vitation symposium for participants<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pilot studies for <strong>the</strong> National <strong>Professional</strong>Standards for Teachers and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Professional</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>gFlagship Program: Lead<strong>in</strong>g Curriculum Change.
