Ms. Lopezwas the youngest child of six born to RooseveltSr. and Wilhelmina Cleare Sands.Rose was a tireless worker in her belovedCornish Memorial A. M. E. Zion Church. Herlove for her church and her church familynever stopped. She held several offices at herchurch, including membership on the TrusteeBoard, Steward Board, Women’s Home andOverseas Missionary, Sr. Choir President, andchurch pianist. She graduated from DouglassHigh School and married Charles Andre LopezSr. They had four children; Clayton, Calvin,Carlton, and Wilhelmina. In addition to raisingher own children, Rose found the time to helpother children and the elderly. Her pursuit of higher education led herto complete courses of study at Monroe Jr.College. She began her career in the MonroeCounty School District as a Title I Teacher’sAide and instructor working with non-Englishspeaking children at Truman ElementarySchool. When the School District advanced intechnological instruction, Rose was one of thefirst Classroom Computer Proctors workingat Glynn R. Archer Elementary School. Sheassisted the District with its expansion of itscomputer learning system, helped proctorsfrom other schools when problems arose.“She worked well with faculty, administrationand support staff, personalizing commitmentto education and morale regardless of changes. Two and a half generations of students stillremember withfondness the timespent in “Ms. Lopez’class.” Staff andstudents always feltindividually specialaround her. Shewas one of the bestlovedinstructorsthroughout hercareer, and receivedrecognition asEmployee of theMonth, SchoolBoard Employeeof Year “ readsone of her manycommendationsreceived at herretirement. Shewas one of theearliest membersof Key West City’s HARC board anda member of Key West’s MemorialSculpture Garden Committee. After her retirement, her daughterin-law,Pam talked her into workingwith her at Sunbeam ChristianSchool. When Sunbeam was closeddue to damage resulting fromHurricane Wilma, Rose again assistedher daughter-in-law in starting TheLearning Center of Key West. She“adopted” many of her children’sfriends, her students and otherchildren in the community. Manyfriends (those her age, younger andolder) affectionately regarded her as“Mama Rose.”Rose was proud of her children. But her already bright light seemedto shine ever more brightly whenshe was with her grandchildrenand great-grandchildren, who wereher greatest joy! Rose was mostproud of all of her family members’Photos by Tom Oosterhoudtaccomplishments. She beamed when anyonecalled with good news about a milestone! The last event she attended was with hergreat-granddaughter, Detra’s kindergartenclass singing carols for the residents of theRehabilitation Center. The legacy Rose Lopez leaves speaks clearlyfor her today. The lives touched by herunconditional love for all mankind speaks forher. “Beloved, let us love one another: for loveis of God; and every one that loveth is born ofGod, and knoweth God.” 1 John 4:7Rose LopezMiss Rose with her family, Donna, Calvin,Com. RememberingMaria BetancourtOver the holidays, our community lost one of its most colorful andvibrant personalities. Maria Betancourt succumbed on December 21st to thecomplications of a fall in Miami. Maria was a Key West attorney a and proudand active member of the Women’s Club. She was often seen about our townat various social gatherings and charitable events. A native of Camaguey, Cuba,Maria never lost her Latin flare. She enjoyed travel and people and her sense ofhumor is legend. She had many friends and shall be sorely missed by one and all.Editor’s note, Many of us, including myself, knew Maria best during her yearswith Paul Toppino. This is why most of my photos of her are with Paul. Here Maria and Paul joined in a photo op at LaTeDa with Bobby Nesbitt,Stephanie Leone, and Bruce Moore. Please feel free to contact us formore information at:305 296-8297conch color the florida keys 29 photographic chronicle

Imagine A Modern Family In Apocalyptic Meltdown“August” - Osage County - Is All That And MoreThis Hilarious Tragicomedy is a Gripping Send UpOf Domestic Life In Today’s Crazy WorldBy Tom OosterhoudtOsage County issomeplace in Okalahoma wheretheater has never ventured. There’s no “brighten goldenhaze on this meadow”. Thisthree hour three act play ismesmerizing. The soap operalike characters suck you deepinto their world, with turbochargedacting, if you can stoplaughing long enough to focuson the drama that is mixed into the fascinating plot. Holdon to you seats though, becausethis theatrical roller coaster ofemotions is one bumpy ride. One never knows what surprisetwist is next. The show is extremelywell cast, as Danny Weathershas become known for, but forJoy Hawkins, who plays therazor tongued matriarch of theWeston family, it is a role of alifetime. Hawkins sizzles in thisrole. The family reels every timeshe spews her venomous bitingdialogue. And the back andforth between her and her kinwill have you rolling in the aisleswith laughter. There is not a weak linkin the rest of the cast either. Thechemistry between the family, especially the various siblings, istangibly real. While no familyhas ever been this unhappy in somany ways, there is somethingfor everyone in this show to relateto. There are more relevant issuesin this show that any local familycan relate to than any recent bigscreen movie has been able totackle. You name it, alcoholism, drug addiction, adultery, andsexual misbehavior, it’s all hereand it’s all skewered by powerfuldialogue.“Osage” tackles crueltyand pain somehow with upliftinghumor. It explores the limits offamily ties. And most of the timeyou never see the next punch linecoming, and they indeed keepcoming. This show jump starts yetanother amazing season at theWaterfront Playhouse under theclever showmanship of theaterringmaster Danny Weather. Thisisn’t just good theater, its greattheater. You will leave the theaterafter seeing “Osage”, emotionallywrung out as well as exhaustedfrom laughing. This thoughtprovoking show is what realtheater is all about. If you are looking forentertainment, it does not get anybetter than this.Run, don’t walk, to the WaterfrontPlayhouse to see this incredibleshow.
