Veliko jih je in najdeš jih povsod. Letos v oktobru planirava aktivniizlet v Čile, Bolivijo in Peru. Zelo lepoje videti vesele ljudi in – kakor koli že: vsi imajo en sam cilj, in to jeprehoditi Jakobovo pot. Citiram: »Pozdravljeni, pohodniki in romarji.

Adria smo ljudjevseh romarjev in popotnikov. To, kar vidite v tej prelepi katedrali, jedelo ljudi.

Nenad DjokovićWhen you reach Finisterreyou are reborn…In conversation with Barbara M. BukovecPhotographs: personal archiveCape Finisterre (from finis terrae meaning “end of theearth”), jutting out into the Atlantic, is the destinationof many of the travellers who set out on one of thepilgrimage trails collectively known as El Camino deSantiago or the Way of St James. This part of the Spanishcoast contains a special symbolism in its very name, which derives from Roman times. Pilgrims atone for theirsins by walking to the tomb of St James in Santiago deCompostela; if they then continue their journey a further88 kilometres to the coast, they are entirely reborn.Nenad Djoković works in Adria’s Performance and Flight PlanningDepartment, which is responsible for providing pilots with allnecessary information before a flight. Adrijin potnikProf. dr. Opravil sem izpite in so me sprejeli. Še danessem vznemirjen ob vzletanju in pristajanju letal.

Popularno so temu rekli »bolezen stevardes«. ProfessorIgor Bartenjev MD, PhDNo Such Thingas a Healthy TanText: Matjaž Potokar Photographs: personal archiveDoes today’s civilisation idolise youth and devote toomuch attention to it, or is that just our impression? Thisis a question that would be worth putting to many people, but perhaps one of those better qualified to answer it isdermatology professor Igor Bartenjev. Our skin reflectswhat is going on in our bodies. But can we stop it fromageing or even rejuvenate it? Professor Bartenjev’s maxim“there’s no such thing as a healthy tan” is one that raiseseyebrows. But of course it doesn’t mean that we shouldnever go out in the sun, he says. When the professor’sgrandfather moved to this country from tsarist Russia, hecould not have imagined that his descendants would oneday become important doctors and professors. ProfessorBartenjev respects his Russian roots while at the same timemaintaining a certain critical distance. During his term asvice president of the Slovenia–Russia Friendship Societyhe began learning Russian at his wife’s language school, alongside Slovene diplomats and members of the businesscommunity. He is still proud of this today. He also likes toremember the many part-time jobs he did to earn pocketmoney in his student days. He worked – briefly – as amodel and was also an Adria Airways cabin crew member. He has particularly fond memories of the 1980s, which iswhen he fell in love with flying. Excellent company anddirect contact with the outside world were a lot morefun than strutting down the catwalk at a fashion show.Today, as well as practising at his own clinic, he teachesat the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana, where he holdsthe Chair of Dermatovenerology. Professor Bartenjev isan interesting man. His answers to questions about waysto beat ageing are interesting and well-informed.28 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

How did you end up in the world of aviation? After finishing my fourth year at medical school I answered anadvertisement for cabin crew. I sat the tests and they accepted me.My father was, despite being a doctor, a thrifty man, so if I wantedspending money I had to earn it myself. I may not have agreed withhim at the time, but today I can see that I learnt a lot from this.I had already tried a lot of different jobs before then, but none ofthem spoke to me in the way that flying did. This was back in 1982.Because of the various restrictions in Yugoslavia of that time, flyingoffered me contact with the “free” world and the chance to buy manyconsumer goods that were not to be found in the country at the time.I felt like a bank manager! I also enjoyed the company very much. IfI look back today, I can say that this was an extremely happy periodof my life. I still find taking off and landing an exciting experience. How did your grandfather adapt to life in this country? My grandfather Dmitri Bartenev was an officer in the imperialRussian army who fled to this country after the October Revolution. He was an exile who was unable to return to his homeland. I’m sureyou can understand that for this reason we were never on good termswith the Soviet Union. I remember my grandfather playing the violinand crying as he watched ice hockey on television. I didn’t understandwhy at the time, but today I can empathise with this profound nationalsentiment. When I go to Russia I feel a sense of belonging; I cannotsay the same thing about America, for example. In a big country, national awareness is strong and your spirit is pervaded with a senseof belonging. I think this feeling is something that we Slovenes lack.Later on, when I came into contact with ambassadors and consuls inmy role as vice president of the Slovenia–Russia Friendship Society, Inever experienced any kind of political pressure or resentment overthe fate of my grandfather. You have to wait at least until middle ageto develop such feelings, since it is only then that you really start tobe aware of your roots. It is not something that my son Mark Sergejand I talk about, for example – at least not yet.Recently it has become common to hear or read that sunbathingis harmful. What is your opinion on this? The genetic structure of the skin is the essential criterion, but thedamage is always done by excessive quantities. The sun is a stressfactor for the skin. If you get sunburnt once or twice in your life, itis not a big problem. But if it happens on a day-to-day basis, seriousdiseases can result. As well as the skin, of course, it is importantto take into account the other organs that benefit from exposure tothe sun. It is probably fair to say that part of the campaign againstsunbathing is linked to an attempt to increase sales of pharmaceuticalsun protection products. Unfortunately, sunbathing is the only factorthat we can consciously influence. The sun’s rays really can cause allkinds of skin cancer, including malignant melanoma. Melanomasaccount for roughly 5% of skin cancers but are responsible for morethan 90% of skin cancer deaths. The good news is that the majorityof malignant melanomas can be cured, provided we catch them intime. In cases of psoriasis, on the other hand, the sun is a lot less harmfulthan the cytostatic drugs prescribed by some doctors. I would notlike to claim that the incidence of skin disease has increased inrecent years, but there is no doubt that new forms have appeared. Forexample: in the 1970s German dermatologists described a diseasethat is today very common – perioral dermatitis. This was popularlyknown as “stewardess’s disease”. I’m talking about a skin diseasewhere an acne-like rash appears, particularly in the area aroundthe mouth. This is a hormonal and environmental combinationwhich is increasingly common today as a result of lifestyle and otherconditions. Back then it was first observed in airline staff, because ofspecific working conditions such as dry air and the use of make-up.What advice can you give to those who want to keep their skinlooking young?A lot of it is to do with genes, while part of it depends on theenvironment in which an individual lives and works. A suitablecombination of these two factors can be effective in halting theageing of the skin. Today we know that the skin and the ageing ofthe organism in general are influenced in particular by variousinflammations, which increase in number as we get older. Fortunatelythese days we are fairly good at repairing damaged skin. In the caseof the epidermis, we simply destroy it so that a new, better outer layercan grow. Another possibility is to promote the growth of collagen inthe skin. We are now able to remove collagen from young people so asto be able to give it back to them when they are older if they need it.Apart from that, medical science recognises four principles in the fightagainst ageing of the skin: nutraceutics (correct diet), pharmaceutics(correct addition of necessary substances), non-invasive repairs andinvasive repairs. Personally I’m not a big fan of excessive repair work, but I am not opposed to it when it is necessary. •Adria Passenger | 29

LondonLondonin SummerText: Alja BukovecPhotographs: ShutterstockIn the summer months the proverbially grey and rainy London comes to lifeout of doors – outside its red-brick walls, under trees, on the broad grassyexpanses of the city parks and on the lively river embankments. Not eventhe occasional shower (we are in London after all!) can spoil the traditionaljostling with a pint in your hand outside a pub, or evening gatherings withjugs of Pimm’s in gardens or on terraces with a view of the endless urbanfabric that never really stops and is never really silent. In these warmer months of the year, almostall of London’s parks are transformed intovenues for concerts, plays and exhibitionsof the highest calibre. So as well as seeing allthe conventional sights – from the Housesof Parliament and Big Ben and the changingof the guard at Buckingham Palace to a visitto Chinatown and a walk down Piccadillyamong the throngs of tourists – it is worthadding a visit to one of the many outdoorevents, taking the time for a picnic and a lazysprawl on the grass of a park, and setting offaround the city by bicycle, on foot or evenby boat, to discover the London that liesbeyond the classic tourist traps. One such route that allows you to discovervarious parts of London from a slightlydifferent point of view runs along the urbanwaterway that is the Regent’s Canal. This14-kilometre route begins in a small basin inthe west of the city not far from Paddingtonin the charming district known as LittleVenice.

ŠtajerskaThe Green Hillsof ŠtajerskaText: Marjan ŽibernaPhotographs: Domen GröglOriginally from the Primorska region, I actually live in Ljubljana, butŠtajerska, the northeastern region my wife hails from, has become so muchlike home to me that for some years now I have been impatiently waiting formy application for “citizenship” to be finally approved. It seems, though, thatit is not so easy to wake the sleepy officials from their slumber, despite thefact that I never miss an opportunity to sing the praises of the many wonderswith which beautiful Štajerska is blessed...First and foremost, if you ask me,are the things closely connectedwith the green hills of this regioncorresponding to the southernmost third ofthe former Duchy of Styria, the other twothirds of which today constitute the Austrianstate of Styria or Steiermark. Many of thesehills are in fact planted with flourishingvineyards, where the grapes ripen in autumn. And the people of Štajerska, my future“fellow citizens”, know how to make excellentwines from them. Predominant among themare the whites, starting with Rheinriesling,Welschriesling, Pinot gris, Silvaner, Moscatogiallo, and a number of others. At this point Iam not even going to try and bluff – I dividewines into good, slightly less good and bad.So I am not going to talk about bouquet –hints of rose, anise, acacia or somethingmore exotic, as connoisseurs would haveit – or about smoothness and the otherproperties of wine either. I can, however, state with certainty that you will rarely beserved bad wine in Štajerska, or in otherwords that you can count on a good if notindeed an excellent drop in your glass.42 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

Be that as it may, it seems likely that thisregion has had a connection with grapevinesand wine since Roman times, and directproof of this long-lasting love is to be found inthe very centre of Maribor. On the left bankof the Drava, in the Lent district, they willproudly show you a vine that is more than400 years old and appears in the Guinnessbook of records as the oldest vine in theworld. It was planted at a time when the citywas under siege by the Ottoman Turks, andalthough the House of the Old Vine – thename of the building against which the vinegrows – was once part of the city walls, itsurvived all the furious fighting. Havinglived through the fires that destroyed thewooden roofs of the medieval houses, thephylloxera plague and the Allied bombingraids during the Second World War, the vineis sometimes referred to as “the hardy one”.The nearby Drava has certainly helped it tosurvive, since the vine’s roots extend deepinto the gravel of the riverbed. No wonder, then, that the people of Štajerska havededicated a hymn to their vine. In honour ofthe hardy Old Vine, and to its eternal glory, picturesque wine routes and cellars in whichthe dark-red wine is laid down to age can befound throughout Štajerska. If you follow these routes in summeror autumn you may also spot anothercharacteristic feature of this area: the klopotecor bird-scaring rattle. Its wooden blades aredriven by the wind so that the macleki, asthe wooden clappers are known, create theirunmistakable music. Farmers once used thisdevice to drive voracious birds away fromthe ripening grapes in their vineyards – atleast this was the intention – but today theŠtajerska | 43

Štajerskaerecting of a klopotec has become a folktradition and an opportunity for a merrygathering and a party. The rattles are usuallyerected – on long poles – at the end of July, around St James’s Day, or a few weeks later, for the Feast of the Assumption.Numerous wineries have open dayswhere you can get on very familiar termswith wines you may not have encounteredbefore. Especially if you do not give themthe chance to go straight to your head andinstead slow their journey down a little byaccompanying them with something to eat.Štajerska is a gastronomically rich regionand local menus include many dishes thatare said to be “heavy”, in other words ideal foraccompanying wine. These naturally includevarious types of meat. Yet despite being theproud owner of an apron proclaiming thatthe pig is the king of beasts, the first thingthat comes to my mind when Štajerskacuisine is mentioned is pumpkin-seed oil.I admit that initially it reminded me of the44 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

oil that drips from a car engine whose bestdays are long gone, and that back then I wascompelled to use all the diplomacy at mydisposal to assure my mother-in-law thatI found its flavour “interesting”. It may nothave been love at first sight but having oncefound a place in my heart, that is where it hasremained. Some types of salad, starting withlamb’s lettuce, are in my opinion at their verybest when served with pumpkin-seed oil. There are many more nice things I couldsay about Štajerska. Not least about itsthermal spas. I found myself visiting one ofthese because of chronic neck problems fromwhich I had suffered for years, and suddenly itbecame clear to me why people love going tospas – an activity about which I had previouslybeen known to speak rather disdainfully. TheRomans, ancient hedonists par excellence, knew all about spas. Apparently the wealthycitizens of Poetovium, a town on the Dravathat was the predecessor of present-day Ptuj, were accustomed to the luxury of thermalwaters nearly 2,000 years ago. According to anarticle I read some years ago, if I remember itcorrectly, while bathing at the spa they wouldtreat themselves to “dormouse lollipops” –There are many more nice thingsI could say about Štajerska.roast dormice (of the edible variety) stuck onskewers, drenched in honey and sprinkledwith sesame seeds. These days the charming town of Ptuj offersa sweet speciality of another kind: at the Daysof Poetry and Wine Festival in late August youhave the opportunity to listen, as the namesuggests, to poetry. You may think that yourpores are entirely impenetrable to poetry, but that first part of the festival’s name is areference to a remedy that can unexpectedlycause them to open. I speak from personalexperience. Regarding the golf courses thathave established themselves on some ofŠtajerska’s gentler hills, I have nothing to say.At least not for the time being. But I have thisold friend who, every time we speak, talkswith such infectious enthusiasm about howwonderful it is to hit a golf ball and watch tosee whether it will go in the right direction, that I find myself listening with interest, andI am starting to think that perhaps one day Ishould try it for myself...

In meni tečeže deseto leto.

Bela KrajinaNostalgiafor Bela KrajinaText: Katarina MahničPhotographs: Iztok DimcDrive along the main road – known as the “Partizanka” – from Dolenjskatowards Croatia in the early morning and you will find an almost unrealscene awaiting you at the top of the slope above Semič. Below you extends asea of fog, from which hills and the occasional church bell tower project likelittle islands. Arriving here by train is even more dramatic, as you emergeinto the daylight from a two-kilometre tunnel right in the middle of theSemič vineyards. Back in our student days, when we travelled by train a lot,the landscape before the tunnel was still wintry in early spring, but on theBela Krajina side everything was already full of colour, because of the highertemperatures, and it was like passing from purgatory to paradise. The trainconductor used to say, jokingly: “In California the orange trees are alreadyin bloom!” And so our train became known as the “California Express”. Thiswas a train on which you were never bored despite the two-and-a-half-hourjourney. On Sunday evenings our travelling bags, which devoted mothers hadfilled with local delicacies, ensured that we were never hungry either.Ifeel myself being carried away, likeeveryone does who writes about BelaKrajina and has even a single drop of BelaKrajina blood in their veins. Because thisis a region you can never shake off once ithas got under your skin. A region where thesky is widest and the stars in the night skyappear closest. A region where the landscapestretches to infinity – and this openness hasalso left its mark on the inhabitants. Whereelse could you return from a walk withyour appetite sated and even a little drunk, although there is only a single vineyardcottage along the way? Even the great Slovenepoet Oton Župančič, who was born in thisregion, in Vinica, felt its power his entire lifeand wrote one of the most beautiful homagesto a birthplace that I have ever read: “Fornine, ten years I have not seen you, o whiteworld between the Gorjanci and the Kolpa! The Eskimos have a belief that a man shouldnot stay a whole year away from home, or hisnative hearth will disappear from his souland his memory. Yet for me the tenth year isalready passing. No, I am no Eskimo.”Bela Krajina (literally the White March;sometimes known as White Carniola inreference to its former status as part of the oldDuchy of Carniola) lies in south-east Sloveniaand although it is unquestionably a regionin its own right, the uninitiated – perhapsbecause of the vineyards – sometimescount it as part of Dolenjska, much to theannoyance of the locals. With the ancientforest of Kočevje, the region’s highest peakMirna Gora (1,048 m) and the hilly Gorjanciat its back, Bela Krajina wrests itself fromthe dark forests below Smuk (545 m) andspreads like a giant watercolour across theundulating plain as far as the river Kolpa, which divides it from Croatia. No one reallyknows where the “white” part of the region’sname comes from: it may be because of thewhite birch trees that grow here, or the whiteof the region’s traditional costumes, or whitelinen. Perhaps it has something to do withthe bright white light that characterises theregion, or the foaming white rapids of thenumerous weirs on the Kolpa, which are hereknown as waterfalls. “Let’s go and walk alongthe waterfall!” we used to say, when as kids52 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

Myths, legends andcustoms interminglein this little cornerof Slovenia.we spent our summers by the Kolpa, and itsounded terribly adventurous.Rising in Croatia’s mountainous GorskiKotar region, the Kolpa is Slovenia’s warmestand cleanest river, as well as its longestkarst river. It also gives its name to theKolpa Nature Park, one of 11 natural parksin Slovenia, which was established in 1998and extends from Fučkovci near Adlešiči toStari Trg ob Kolpi. This means that part ofBela Krajina – its flat southernmost sectionthat is joined to neighbouring Croatia by theriver – is a protected area. Here you will findeverything that makes this region somethingtruly special: characteristic vernaculararchitecture, the most interesting exampleof which is the dvor of the Uskoks, not somenoble dwelling as the name might suggest buta simple set of farm buildings around a closedcourt; the vineyards with small woodenvineyard buildings that also served as cottagesor, in many families, as the first home of anewly-wed couple; little pilgrim churches andother religious buildings including Orthodoxchurches; the remains of numerous millsand some that are still working; castles andtheir ruins; stands of birch trees with brackenundergrowth that is used by local farmers asbedding to livestock; karst sinkholes, floodedkarst caves and springs; fields of corn, flax andhemp; pastureland full of karst depressions, where an indigenous breed of sheep, the BelaKrajina Pramenka, which at one time nearlydied out, once again grazes and is protectedfrom wolves by – and this I would never haveguessed – Istrian donkeys.Myths, legends and customs intermingle inthis little corner of Slovenia, with its melodiousform of speech spiced with borrowings fromCroatian. Green George spins round withbeautiful Annie who leads the dance, flaxis dressed and woven, wool is spun, Eastereggs – the famous Bela Krajina pisanice anddrsanke – are painted, lambs rotate slowlyon the spit... Or you can withdraw fromthis world of plenty and float in a boat onthe smooth surface of the Kolpa, observingthe riverside life of its overgrown banks. Orclimb up to one of the natural lookout pointsabove the river and admire its gentle flowfrom a precipitous rock face. It sounds like acliché, but it is true. No wonder that the lateSilvin, a man of this region from Župančič’slegendary poem St Barbara’s Cemetery that Istill remember from my school days, shouldrise from his tomb not at night but by day, inorder to wander around a little longer – since“he who has absorbed the light of these placesdoes not forget them.” •Bela Krajina | 53

Postojnska jamaTakih in drugačnihzanimivostije še veliko.

V Plesniin Koncertni dvorani so nekoč prirejalirazkošne plese in koncerte. Vodič pove, daje v letih 1929 in 1930, ko so ti kraji pripadaliItaliji, tu z opernim zborom iz milanskeScale gostoval sloviti skladatelj in dirigentPietro Mascagni, skladatelj opere CavalleriaRusticana.

Postojna CavePostojna Cave –An Exhibition on a UniqueUnderground WorldText: Marjan ŽibernaPhotographs: Postojnska jama d.d. archivePostojna Cave is a phenomenon that has been attracting visitors since 1818, when the caver Luka Čeč discovered apassage into its hitherto unknown sections. It was in April of that year that Emperor Francis I of Austria desired tovisit the cave with his wife, the Empress Caroline Augusta. The hosts set about illuminating and decorating the partof the cave known up to that time, extending 300 metres from the cave entrance, in a manner befitting His ImperialMajesty. Čeč laid a ladder over the channel of the underground river Pivka in order to place a pyramid bearing aninscription on the rocks above it. And so it was that he stumbled upon the entrance to a continuation of the cave. This was the key moment that would make Postojna Cave attractive to ordinary visitors, rather than merely tocourageous explorers of the dark underworld.58 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

Since then the cave has undergoneepochal moments that have helpedspread its fame around the world.Perhaps the new permanent exhibitionEXPO Postojnska jama kras (Expo PostojnaCave Karst), which opened in April this yearafter three years of careful preparations, will be one such moment. The openingof the exhibition, which is housed in apurpose-built structure not far from thecave entrance, took place shortly after the36 millionth visitor had entered the cave. The aim of the exhibition is to present all thedifferent dimensions of the undergroundcave world to those who have alreadyvisited the cave – or who plan to do so aftervisiting the exhibition. The cave guideswho accompany visitors through the cavedo not stint on explanations, but when youare gazing in wonder at the magnificence ofstalactites and stalagmites, it can be easy tomiss what they say. Thus, for example, youmay miss the fact that the stalagmite that isas tall as you are has been growing for some17,000 or 18,000 years. In other words at thespeed of one millimetre per decade.“This is the wall of champions,” says theguide who will conduct us through theexhibition. The room we are in is discreetlylit and the sound of dripping water can beheard – a sound that can only be heard ina cave.On the wall indicated by the guide, signs conveying remarkable facts aboutPostojna Cave light up one after the other:114 species of cave fauna; a railway that hasbeen carrying visitors through undergroundtunnels since 1872; electric lighting since1883, when the streets of London were stilllit by gas; the only underground post office inthe world, which opened in August 1899 andwhich once, when postcards were very muchin fashion, sold 78,000 of them in a singleday; and 150 kings, emperors, presidentsand supreme rulers of other kinds who haveentered their names, as visitors to the cave,in the so-called golden book, since a visit toPostojna Cave was a matter of prestige... Oneof the pioneers of which the cave is proudis the first known cave beetle, Leptodirushochenwartii. This tiny creature broughtfame to Luka Čeč, who discovered it in1831, and thanks to it Postojna Cave becameknown as the cradle of world speleobiology. As the exhibition shows, making imaginativeuse of the possibilities offered by state-of-the-art technology, the undergroundworld of the cave also became famousamong lovers of entertainment and art. TheBallroom and Concert Hall once served asvenues for magnificent dances and concerts. The guide tells us that in 1929 and 1930,when this area was part of Italy, the famouscomposer and conductor Pietro Mascagni, the composer of the opera Cavalleria Rusticana, appeared here with the choir of LaScala opera house from Milan. And whilewe’re on the subject of music, the exhibitionalso gives you the chance to hear a kind ofmusic that is very different from operas andsymphonies.“Those are the Neanderthals,” says the guide, pointing to a group of shaggy individuals ofsomewhat alarming appearance dressed inanimal skins and gathered around a fire in arocky cave. The latter is as realistic looking asits inhabitants. “Well, not real ones,” he grins, when he sees the astonished expressions onthe faces of the visitors. “This is what theirmusic was probably like,” he adds, in referenceto the sound of a flute that can be heard fromthe back of the cave. The exhibition doesnot, in fact, focus only on Postojna Cave andits characteristics, but includes the widerKarst region in all its various aspects. Onesuch aspect is the prehistoric inhabitants ofthis region: the Neanderthals. The simplebut pleasant sounds of the flute carry amessage from the distant past into thismodern exhibition space – that even 55,000years ago (at least), music already meant alot to people. This is, in fact, the age of therudimentary flute made from the thighbonePostojna Cave | 59

Postojna CaveThe exhibitionincludes many othercuriositiestoo.of a cave bear that was found in 1995 at theDivje Babe site near Cerkno. Believe it ornot, the musician Ljuben Dimkaroski – whoplays the simple melody issuing from theNeanderthals’ cave – has even played Bachon a replica of this flute! And still on thesubject of music, though of a very differentkind: at this multifaceted exhibition you caneven listen to the Lojze Slak Ensemble, whoin 1979 recorded a piece entitled “PostojnaCave” among the stalagmites and stalactitesof the cave. Something I find strangelymoving, since for a moment it takes me backto a time when, whether I liked it or not, I hadto listen to the Sunday lunchtime phone-inradio show as I ate my beef broth and mashedpotatoes sautéed with onion…The exhibition includes many othercuriosities too. For example the fact, cited bythe guide, that way back in the Earth’s historythe place we are standing in was part of theland around the equator, which then “setoff” towards the north. It was this equatorialposition that enabled the formation ofPostojna Cave and similar karst caves. Thicklayers of limestone formed from the remainsof countless marine organisms that settledon the seabed. This was then dissolved bywater and created an underground worldwith a huge variety of cave formations. We enter a room where the temperatureis the same as the constant year-roundtemperature in the cave – around 10 degreesCelsius. Then we enter total darkness, in60 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

order to understand what that actually feelslike. Fortunately it is lit up at least slightlyfrom time to time by the outlines of the“human fish” (the famous cave salamanderor olm) gleaming faintly from the wall…In the underground world, laid out asa show cave for visitors, open-mouthedvisitors feast their eyes and listen to theexplanations of experienced cave guides. But the thing about human senses is thatwhile sometimes they complement eachother, other times they cancel each otherout – if all your attention is taken up bythe remarkable sight in front of you, it caneasily happen that the interesting thingsthey are telling you about it simply pass youby unheard. At least that is what happensin my case. Which may be something to dowith the fact that I am a man. Our inabilityto cope with more than one thing at onceis a matter of record. This makes the newlyopened exhibition even more welcome.Even the fairer and smarter sex will findsomething to interest them. But whether anexhibition that offers a good illustration ofthe atmosphere of the cave is also suitable forthose who suffer from claustrophobia andwho would therefore prefer to give the cave awide berth, I am not so sure. Our guide didmake this claim in passing. But since overthe course of these two hours – which wentby amazingly quickly – I had realised that hewas a bit of a joker, I don’t know whether hewas being serious or not. •Postojna Cave | 61

Do druge svetovnevojne je palača arhitekta Maksa Fabianijaostala fašistična hiša. Ti so slovenski napisTRGOVSKI DOM na pročelju zamenjaliz VIVA L'ITALIA. Ko so prišle v Gorico1945 slovenske partizanske enote, so stavbopoimenovali Ljudski dom, vanjo pa sose vselile kulturne ustanove, povezane vSlovensko-italijanski antifašistični uniji. To dokazujejo njegovi izumi invizionarske ideje.

ArchitectureMax Fabianiand the Trgovski Domin GoriziaText: Matjaž PotokarPhotographs: B. Peric, Museum of Gorica, NŠK - Biblioteca slovena D. Feigel archivesThis year marks the 150 th anniversary of the birth of oneof the greatest Slovene architects and urban planners,Max Fabiani. Born in the little village of Kobdilj in theKarst, at that time part of Austria, the architect anduniversity professor made a remarkable contribution toarchitecture both in Slovenia and abroad, and also to theculture of his native region. In Vienna, where he receivedhis doctorate, he left his mark above all as an architect– in addition to teaching at the university and acting asartistic and political adviser to Franz Ferdinand, the heirto the Austrian throne. He apparently even attempted todissuade the Archduke from making his ill-fated journeyto Sarajevo. The Viennese are still proud of the FabianidesignedArtaria and Urania buildings, while Ljubljanawould probably not have recovered so quickly fromthe great earthquake of 1895 without Fabiani’s urbanmaster plan. Before the end of the First World War, atthe height of his success, he returned to his native Karstand dedicated himself to urban planning and renewalin the Soča/Isonzo Valley, the Karst, the province ofGorizia, the Vipava Valley and the wider Friuli region. He is considered by experts to be among the mostimportant urban planners of the Austrian Empire, andan innovator in architecture. In one interview with anItalian newspaper he claimed to have dismissed AdolfHitler from his architectural studio in Vienna because ofthe latter’s poor draughtsmanship. History has neitherrefuted nor confirmed the truth of this incident, so itremains an anecdote.Fabiani captured the hearts of the Slovenes of Primorska (thethree provinces of the Austrian Küstenland/Litorale) withhis plans for two remarkable buildings that strengthened thenational convictions and aspirations of the Slovene community. TheNarodni Dom (literally: “House of the Nation”) in Trieste was builtto his plans in 1904. Until it was destroyed in an arson attack in1920, it was the centre of the developing Slovene cultural, economicand political self-affirmation. Less well known but no less importantwas his Trgovski Dom (“House of Commerce”) in Gorizia. As wecelebrate this year’s anniversary of Fabiani’s birth it is interestingto note this building’s different, European destiny of cooperationand coexistence. Unlike the Narodni Dom in Trieste, set on fire as aconsequence of the rise of Fascism, the Trgovski Dom in Gorizia hassurvived and is today living a very different destiny. At the end of the nineteenth century all the commercial activityof the Slovene provinces converged on Gorizia, where crafts of everykind were also flourishing. Economic activities were channelled, asa form of self-organisation for the benefit of the community, intothe Trade and Crafts Cooperative (Trgovsko obrtna zadruga). Soonafter the beginning of the new century, the dream of obtaining a66 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

ase for the commercial and culturalactivities of the Slovene community foundits realisation with the acquisition of a site inthe very centre of Gorizia, on today’s CorsoVerdi. Max Fabiani was commissioned todraw up the plans and by December 1904the Trgovski Dom was ready to begin itsmission. The most modern building in thecity, it even had electric lighting – somethingnot even major theatres were able to boastat that time. Some of the most importantcultural and economic institutions ofGorizia’s Slovene community found a homein the Trgovski Dom, including the theatre, the community’s most visible activity. Inthe years before the First World War theeconomy of the Gorizia area progressedrapidly. This progress was above all dueto the construction of the railway linkingGorizia and its Austrian hinterland throughthe Isonzo/Soča Valley. Two years after thebuilding was inaugurated, a bookshop andother shops opened on the ground floor. Inthe years leading up to the First World Warthe Trgovski Dom was soon not only thecentre of activities relating to the Slovenenational question but also the focus ofcultural, artistic, business, entertainmentand other activities in Gorizia. In architectural terms Max Fabiani’sremarkable corner building, at the junctionof Corso Verdi and Via Petrarca, reflectedthe style of the Vienna Secession. Althoughthe First World War had a dampening effecton its mission, Fabiani could still sense theeconomic euphoria when he left Vienna toreturn to his native Karst. Unfortunately inthis period a number of unwise investmentshad led the Cooperative into difficulties.Nine years later, the growing tide of Fascismcould no longer tolerate the sight of theSlovene Trgovski Dom. On 4 November1926 Fascist thugs broke into the building, ransacked it and then occupied it. By meansof various legal and financial manoeuvres theFascists put pressure on the owners of thebuilding, eventually “purchasing” it in 1933without handing over a single lira. Until theSecond World War Max Fabiani’s buildingwas destined to serve as the “Casa delFascio”, the local Fascist Party headquarters. The inscription “TRGOVSKI DOM” on thefaçade was replaced by a prominent “VIVAL’ITALIA”. When Slovene partisan unitsentered Gorizia in 1945 the building becamethe Ljudski Dom (“House of the People”) andwas taken over by cultural institutions linkedto the Slovene-Italian Anti-Fascist Union.Following Gorizia’s incorporation intoItaly, the Italian authorities convertedthe building into a tax office. As a result, initiatives and formal actions by the Sloveneminority were interrupted until the 1990s,when the return of the building to itsoriginal owners was included in the lawon the protection of the Slovene minorityin Italy. The first indications that Fabiani’sbuilding might once again be placed in thehands of Slovene organisations began toappear around the time of the centenary ofits inauguration. With the transfer of theNational and Study Library to the formerTrgovski Dom, the path of return appearsto have begun, although it seems that alittle more time will have to pass beforethe building can be fully restored to thecommunity. Be that as it may, the destinyof the Trgovski Dom should be seen in thelight of the corporation, coexistence andEuropean integration of all the nationsalong the former border. As we mark the 150th anniversary ofthe birth of Max Fabiani, we should notoverlook his influence – which is not limitedto Gorizia, where he died in 1962. Notonly is he respected for his work in urbanplanning and architecture, he is viewed asa kind of Renaissance figure whose geniuswas universal. This is demonstrated by hisinventions and his visionary ideas. WhenYugoslavia and Italy finally settled thequestion of the border between the twocountries by signing the Treaty of Osimo inthe mid-1970s, they included in it Fabiani’sidea of a canal between the Danube and theAdriatic, which would have seen Ljubljanaonce again become a river port. •Architecture | 67

Predvsem s takimina dveh nogah. Spremljajo me tako rekoč že od mojega rojstva.

Medved, volk, ris – velike zveri so tukaj doma, a živijov glavnem prikrito življenje in le redko prekrižajopot človeku. Skorajbi že pozabila, kako dragocena so takšnasrečanja.

VSloveniji poseljuje medved prostor dinarskegagozda. Medved predstavlja to, kar si naravovarstveniki, ljubitelji narave, prizadevamo že leta... Medved ni le 200 kg mišic in maščobe.

Kočevje ForestBearProwlsText and photographs: Petra DraškovičI couldn’t say when this fatal attraction began. Ever since I can remember,I have been surrounded by them. Above all by those on two legs. They havebeen with me ever since I was born. So it is hardly surprising that I shouldjoke from time to time that I am half bear – especially if you consider thatmy mother’s maiden name was Medved (which in Slovene means bear). My enthusiasm for bears hasincreased over the years. Nowonder, then, that my restlessspirit has frequently led me to Alaska andCanada to photograph them. Not only that,I have even moved to the Kočevje region. To be closer to the bears? Some people have“accused” me of that – though we oftenmake major changes in our lives becauseof love… But bears are not the only reasonthe wild Kočevje landscape entranced me.Kočevje has always been rather mysterious, perhaps because of its turbulent history, itssecretive nature during and after the SecondWorld War, but also because of its forestsand all the living things that are part of it.Bears, wolves, lynx – this area is home to thelarge carnivores, but for the most part theylive a hidden life and rarely cross paths withhuman beings. My “bear prowls” – the expeditions I makewhen I want to photograph this animal – donot, of course, always end with a great shotof a bear like the one for the cover of thismagazine. Frequently my only memory ofsuch a day is an impression of the wakingdawn, a roebuck greeting the morning withhis distinctive bark, or the mists parting toreveal the new day to the sun. Sometimesjust a paw print or a scratch on a tree, perhaps a rubbed tree where the attentiveeye may spot a few trapped bear hairs…Often I will come home full of enthusiasmabout such traces of a bear’s presence, andin my heart I am saying to myself: “…this ishis home range, this is where he rested, herehe turned rocks over looking for tasty waspnests, here is his den…” And this for me is aprivilege. To be in the forest where beneaththe green canopies of the beeches and firs, below a starry sky, the bear walks freely. One evening in May, at the end of a longday, I was walking with my camera throughthe Kočevje forest and, like so many timesbefore, quietly thinking about how wonderfulit would be to meet… a bear, of course. Whathappiness in my heart as I see before me, ina logging road, an adult male on his eveningpatrol of his range. Sniffing gently, his nosealmost to the ground, he moved silentlyamong the giant trees. His characteristicshoulders-forward gait showed that he wasan older bear, a powerful animal, though hispaw print in the mud was not very big. What a wonderful creature this is, I think tomyself… I could almost forget how precioussuch encounters are. What grace in hiswalk, what elegance of movement… The lastrays of sunlight filtering through the warmtreetops illuminate the hairs on his ear…72 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

Ahh… Perfection. This is one of thosefleeting encounters that are unrepeatable...Yes, the brown bear (Ursus arctos) is acharismatic creature, and one that awakensdifferent emotions in people: from fearand hatred to wonder and admiration. InSlovenia bears live in the area covered byDinaric forest. This means the high westernKarst including the area around Postojnaand Razdrto, other parts of Notranjska andWhat a wonderfulcreature this is,I think to myself…the Kočevje region with part of Bela Krajina.Their habitat also extends north to the Alpsand represents an important link betweenthe countries of central and southern Europe. In Slovenia the bear has been on the IUCNRed List of threatened species since 1993 andis also protected by the Berne Convention.Encounters with bears are rare, eventhough around 450 of them live in Slovenia– almost 300 of them in Kočevje. If once thesize of the bear population was estimatedby counting them at feeding stations a fewtimes a year by the light of the full moon, these days researchers use non-invasivegenetic methods to arrive at significantlymore accurate data that represent a highqualitytechnical basis for management ofthe bear population. But a number is only a number. For somepeople, there are too many bears; for others, too few. More important than this is to finda dialogue and look for ways to coexist withthis large carnivore, of which Slovenia canalso be proud. The well-known nature photographer JimBrandenburg once wrote: “An unexpectedup-close and intimate encounter with a wolfor a bear, now that’s what I call a good day.A moment like that will leave a powerfulmemory in my soul, and if I am well preparedI will also be able to capture the dignity andmystery that surrounds the animal. Youcould say that it is a kind of prayer.”I agree with him: there have been quite anumber of “prayers” of this kind in my life.Sometimes, as I sit waiting in a hide, I findmyself wondering what this forest, these hillswould be like without bears. We are alreadyso alienated from nature: what else wouldallow us to feel such emotions as powerfulas those we experience in the forest, in thewilderness? Who would help us re-establishthis fragile connection between us and wildnature? One, 50 or 450. The number doesn’tmatter. It is still the bear that establishesthis connection. The bear represents something for whichconservationists and nature lovers havebeen working for years. A bear is not just200 kilograms of muscle and fat. Here it ismuch more – it is heritage, it is in the rootsof our culture and our population… It is thewindow through which we touch anotherworld – one that is wild, almost sacred. Andthat is something we should be proud of!Yes, impressions gather slowly... Imagesfirst take shape in the heart. Sometimesimaginary pictures, but what does thatmatter when transforming them intoreality is so wonderful. Sending them intothe world, so that they come alive. For youand me. Through a photograph, a story...Many more times have I set out on the trailof bears. Because they are dear to me…And not only because I am half bear on mymother’s side: it is simply that they teachme something and remind me of the thingsthat are important in life: commitment, perseverance and respect for every livingthing. Including in nature photography.

Razstava v duhu izmenjave idejvečmedijsko in nevsiljivo pedagoško predstavlja duha inrazum takratnega časa in prostora. Povejmo še, da to počnena domiseln in zabaven način.Razstava | 75

Poglejmoraje nekaj najsilnejših in še danes zavidanjavrednih islamskih izumov in domislekov.Eden osnovnih jezikov sporazumevanja, matematika, točneje algebra, je dobila sodobnozasnovo prav v tistem času. Arabci so uporabljalidevet osnovnih indijskih številk. Sistemu so dodali še deseto številko, ničlo, intako dobili sedanji desetiški sistem. Arabskidesetiški sistem poznamo še danes in je najboljrazširjen v svetu. V času digitalizacije nipotrebno posebej razlagati pomena in vlogeničle, saj skupaj z enico tvorita osnove digitalnegajezika. Različne znanostiso si podajale roke v tej hiši znanja inzato so leta sedemsto šestinosemdeset ustanoviliogromno knjižnico rokopisov. Zaradiizjemnega dotoka novih rokopisov in prevajanjastarih so morali stavbo kmalu dograditi. Prevajali so recimoAristotela in Hipokrata. Zrcalni prenos znanjase je nato dogodil v dvanajstem stoletju všpanskem Toledu, ko so tovrstna arabska besedilaspet prevajali v latinščino in pozneje vevropske jezike. Omenjajo ga že v četrtem stoletjuv Aleksandriji in v starih grških spisih.A če so muslimani v vsakem trenutku hotelivedeti iz vseh možnih točk, v kateri smeri jeMeka, so morali okrogli medeninasti astrolabizpiliti do popolnosti. Exhibition1001InventionsText: Matjaž Potokar Photographs: GR Ljubljana archiveThe GR Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre is currently hosting theevocatively titled “1001 Inventions”, an exhibition that aims to demonstratethe extraordinary vitality of Muslim civilisation between Spain, NorthAfrica and China in a period that coincided with the Dark Ages in Europe. The latter only ended with the Renaissance, which itself would not havecome about had the civilisation that is the subject of this exhibition notconserved ancient knowledge and added new, Muslim inventions to it. In thespirit of an exchange of ideas, the exhibition uses multimedia techniquesand an unobtrusively educational approach to present the spirit and reasonof that age and geographical area. We should also add that it does so in animaginative and entertaining manner. It would be superfluous to try and capturein abstract words the concreteness of the1001 inventions, the majority of whichhave shaped – to a greater or lesser extent –our present-day common civilisation. Thereis no point in listing all the enhancementsof ancient knowledge in that period, theadvancement of algebra and geometry, medicine, astronomy, education, trade, thecourageous inclusion of women in publicaffairs, progress in the measurement oftime, surgical interventions and the rise ofarchitecture – to name just the principalfields. Instead we shall look at some of themost significant Muslim inventions and ideasthat still have the power to astonish us today. One of the basic languages ofcommunication – mathematics or, moreprecisely, algebra – gained its modern formduring the Islamic Golden Age. The Arabsused the nine basic Hindu numerals. Theywrote them in such a way that each writtennumeral had as many angles as the numberit represented. To this system they added atenth numeral, zero, and in this way obtainedthe modern decimal system. The Arabicdecimal system is still in use today and isthe most widespread numeral system in theworld. In an age of digitalisation, there is noneed to explain the importance of the role ofthe zero, which together with the numeralone forms the basis of digital language.78 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

Thanks to the convenience of this method ofrecording information, digitalisation is todayused for almost every kind of material. Oneof the more interesting mathematicians ofthe period was the Persian philosopher OmarKhayyam. The Eastern world celebrateshim as an astronomer and mathematician;the West as a poet and philosopher. Hismelancholy quatrains – known as theRubaiyat – still reflect the grace andmysteriousness of the age in which they werewritten, while his approach to solving cubicequations is still celebrated by present-daymathematicians.In the early ninth century the “House ofWisdom” was founded in Baghdad, at thattime one of the largest and richest cities inthe world. For more than two centuries, thisacademy of knowledge attracted scholarsfrom all over the globe. Various sciences werecultivated in this house of knowledge, and inthe year 786 a huge library of manuscriptswas established. Owing to the great influxof manuscripts and the translation of oldones, it soon became necessary to enlargethe building. If anyone brought an unknownbook to the library it would be weighedand its bearer paid in pure gold. Teachingat the House of Wisdom took place inArabic, Persian, Armenian and Greek.Ancient manuscripts were always translatedinto Arabic, thus making it possible forstudents to debate all topics. Among theancient authors translated were Aristotleand Hippocrates. In this way a great dealof ancient knowledge was conserved andbuilt upon – knowledge that the “European”Middle Ages preferred to burn on pyres.A reverse transfer of knowledge then tookplace in the twelfth century in the Spanishcity of Toledo, when the Arabic texts wereretranslated into Latin and, later, intoother European languages. The advantagesbrought by the knowledge (and additions toit) of the House of Wisdom still apply today. Not only because the works of Aristotlehave been conserved, but also because ofthe translation of al-Khwarizmi’s work Aljabrwal-muqābala, from which the word“algebra” derives. Without the developmentof Muslim algebra, there would be nomodern computers.Among the mass of inventions, discoveriesand improvements, it is worth mentioning amagical device that – long before handheldcomputers, sextants and GPS navigators– first placed time and space in the handsof travellers: the astrolabe. Up until theinvention of the sextant in the seventeenthcentury, the astrolabe did an excellent jobof showing the way to all kinds of travellers, particularly seafarers. It is even mentionedin as early as the fourth century, inAlexandria, and in ancient Greek writings. But if Muslims wanted to know at any givenmoment and from anywhere on Earth inwhat direction Mecca lay, they had to refinethe spherical brass astrolabe to perfection. They used it to determine the exact time, asa navigation aid, and to predict sunrise andsunset. In the eleventh century they beganto produce universal astrolabes that did notneed to be “tuned” to a specific positionon the Earth’s surface. These were used todetermine the positions of the Sun, theMoon and the stars and to calculate angles. They could also be used to determine otherunits of time and space. People are stillastonished today by the accuracy of theseremarkable predecessors of today’s handheldcomputers, and they are still used for certainsimple calculations.1001 Inventions is without a doubt anevent that offers us the right informationat the right time. It talks about circlesof knowledge, art, skills and expertisethat constantly complement each otherinstead of contradicting or excluding.Other particularly valuable features of theexhibition are the excellent guided toursand the rich accompanying programme. This includes talks by a variety of experts onthe contribution of women to the IslamicGolden Age, calligraphy, the developmentof philosophy and social sciences, theheritage of Islamic architecture in Europe, and so on. •Without a doubt a magnificentportrayal of Muslim learning.Exhibition | 79

Logarska Dolina is itself wellworth a visit, with attractions including theRinka waterfall, Snežna Jama cave on Raduhaand the timber rafting museum collection inLjubno. At Gornji Grad we slowly prepare forthe last pass on our route. When we reachČrnivec all that remains is the descent intoKamnik, where we began our tour.130 km and threeAlpine passesMedieval Kamnik, idyllic Jezersko, wonderful LogarskaDolinaAs a starting point, we propose the littlemedieval town of Kamnik, which lies atthe foot of the mountains and is just 25kilometres from Ljubljana, the capital ofSlovenia. The first part of the route, headinginto the mountainous Gorenjska region, winds its way through fields, past Komendaand Cerklje, which are also a starting pointfor a visit to Krvavec, a popular recreationcentre. After 30 kilometres the route turnsinto the valley of the Kokra, where we cyclethrough the longest village in Slovenia. Theclimb up through the green and fresh valley isnot difficult – just enough to get us properlywarmed up. When we reach Jezersko, awonderful view of 2000-metre mountainpeaks opens up in front of us. At Jezerski Vrh(Seebergsattel), the first mountain pass on theroute, the landscape opens up towards thenorth, in the direction of Austrian Carinthia. Now comes a descent along the beautifulscenic route towards Bad Eisenkappel(Železna Kapla in Slovene). The road soonbranches off to the right and ahead of us is theclimb up to Pavličevo Sedlo (Paulitschsattel),the most difficult but most beautiful part ofthe route. A picturesque mountain road leadspast mountain farms all the way up to the passitself, at a height of 1,400 metres.

Kuba | 89

Prijazni Kubanci vas pogostijo kar v svojemdnevnem prostoru (paladar) – jastogi, ribe, sadje, solate, sladice in seveda rum so čistapoezija okusov. Kuba | 91

CubaThe AlwaysAttractive Landof Rum, Cigarsand SalsaText and photographs: Juš MedičBefore setting off for Cuba in thewinter of 2011, I had heard a lotof interesting things about thisCaribbean country and seen agreat many photographs featuringincredible scenery and those 1950sAmerican cars that are so muchpart of our image of Cuba. Eversince Cuban leader Fidel Castrohanded over the reins to his brotherRaúl, Cuba has been undergoingrapid changes. Tourist numbersare increasing, and everyday life ischanging too. Nevertheless, there arestill things that separate the worldof the local population from theworld that visitors see. One of thefirst noticeable differences is the useof two currencies – the convertibleCuban peso (CUC) for foreigners andthe Cuban peso (CUP) for locals. Theconvertible peso is often referred toas the “dollar”, since it is used to payfor imported goods. The “nationalpeso” is only used in transactionsbetween Cuban citizens.92 | Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine

The Cuban capital Havana has retainedits incredible charm to the present day. Here Ernest Hemingway spent part ofhis life, at the Hotel Ambos Mundos in OldHavana, which is today a UNESCO WorldHeritage site. The famous American writerlived at the hotel from 1932 until 1939, whenhe moved to a property outside the city. Hisold hotel room is now a tourist attraction, while his house has been converted into amuseum. His boat the Pilar stands next toit. Hemingway was a frequent visitor to ElFloridita, the birthplace of the legendarycocktail the daiquiri. An equally famousbar is La Bodeguita del Medio, whosewalls are decorated by the signatures of itsfamous patrons. It was here that the mojitowas invented – the main ingredients ofHemingway’s favourite cocktail are of courserum and fresh mint.Sugar cane, the basis for rum production, has been Cuba’s main agricultural crop sincecolonial times. In Havana we visit a rumdistillery that produces such famous labelsas Havana Club, Ron de Santiago de Cubaand Legendario. An organised tasting of thedifferent types of rum is a heady experience. And other special experiences of visitors tothe Cabaret Parisien at the Hotel Nacional deCuba. This imposing luxury hotel is situatedon the famous Malecón, the eight-kilometreseafront avenue running between the harbourand Old Havana. While we enjoy a remarkabletheatrical spectacle at the hotel, young Cubansgather outside on the Malecón as evening falls.Another sight worth visiting in Havana isthe cemetery – which is so big that roads runthrough it. It is said to be the largest cemeteryin Latin America. Although tourists don’tusually visit cemeteries, this one in Havana isnot to be missed. Family tombs are adornedby fascinating tombstones on which flowers ofmany colours are placed. After our adventures in the capital we setoff to the province of Pinar del Río, wherethe tobacco for famous Cuban cigars such asthe Cohiba, Montecristo and Romeo y Julietais grown. We also visit a cigar factory, butunfortunately no photographs are allowed. The cigars are mainly made by women, whocan hand-roll up to 150 cigars a day, althoughonly one goes to the torcedora herself. Not farfrom here is the picturesque and fertile Vallede Viñales, a karst depression surrounded bymountains that is the main tobacco-growingarea in Cuba. Because of its natural, culturaland historical features of interest, the valley istoday protected as a national park. After seeing in the New Year at a large hotelin the resort town of Varadero, it is time for aswim with dolphins – one of those experiencesyou never forget. A boat takes us out to adolphin pen in the open sea. Meeting them isa fantastic experience. Varadero lies at the endof a 20-kilometre peninsula and is famous forits white sandy beaches and turquoise sea. Ourholiday here passes quickly – even though thereal spirit of Cuban travel is absent. Our visit to Cuba ends with a visit to thelittle town of Trinidad in the south of theisland. Trinidad is characterised by its livelystreet life, although the lives of the warmspiritedlocals are increasingly orientedtowards tourism. Friendly Cubans will serveyou food in their own living rooms (in a formof family-run restaurant known as a paladar)– lobster, fish, fruit, salad, desserts and ofcourse rum create a pure poetry of flavours. With Trinidad as our base, we set off on atrekking expedition. Thanks to the milderclimate at higher altitudes, the surroundinghills are an ideal place to escape the tropicalheat. Before returning to Havana and our flightback to wintry Europe, there is still time tovisit Santa Clara and the monument, tomband museum of the national revolutionaryChe Guevara. Cuba – a land of rum, cigarsand salsa and wonderful tropical landscapes– left a strong impression on all of us, and Iwould happily return one day to this paradisedestination. •Cuba | 93
