According to statistics, every eight minutes, an underground utility lineis damaged because someone decided to digwithout first calling 811. A recent Common GroundAlliance survey found that 45 percent of people whoplan to dig this year will not call 811 first. If you are planning a digging project, even if youplan to hire a professional, a call to 811 is requiredbefore you begin working. 811 is a free nationalone-call number that connects a caller fromanywhere in the country to the appropriate localone-call center. The one-call center will then alertthe appropriate underground facility owners sothey can mark the approximate location of theirlines with paint or flags.Unintentionally striking a line can result ininconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods, harm to yourself or your neighbors, and repaircosts. That is why every digging project, no matterhow large or small, warrants a call to 811. Installinga mailbox, building a deck, and planting a tree orgarden are all examples of digging projects thatshould only begin a few days after making a callto 811.Here’s how it works:1. One free, simple phone call to 811 makes iteasy for your local one-call center to notify allappropriate utility companies of your intentto dig.2. Call at least 2-3 business days prior to diggingto ensure enough time for utility lines to beproperly marked.3. When you call 811, a representative from yourlocal one-call center will ask for the location anddescription of your digging project.4. Your local one-call center will notify affectedutility companies, who will then send aprofessional locator to the proposed dig site tomark the approximate location of your lines.5. Once lines have been properly marked, rollup those sleeves and carefully dig around themarked areas. To find out more information about Call 811or the one-call utility notification center in yourarea, visit www.call811.com or www.shell.us/pipeline.Carson Tree Planting EventSaturday, April 13, 20138 a.m. – NoonWHATShell is sponsoring — along with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps and the City ofCarson — a day of tree planting and beautification.WHEREVeterans Park at the Corner of Kinard Avenue and W. 225th Street in CarsonVOLUNTEERWe invite you to participate as a volunteer in the beautification of the City of Carson. You’ll learn how to plant and care for trees.
