Lamb Weston / Meijer, KruiningenTailor-made water solutions for the food industry
HistoryPotato trading company Meijer was founded in the Dutchprovince of Zeeland in the 1920s and expanded its activitiesto processing potato products in the 1980s. In 1994Meijer set up a joint venture with American company LambWeston, combining their leading expertise in potato productionwith Meijer’s thorough knowledge of the Europeanmarket. Under the name of Lamb Weston / Meijer V.O.F. theynow operate from three locations in the Netherlands with atotal workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. Exporting90% of its total production, Lamb Weston / Meijer mainlycaters to large restaurant chains, whose standards in Frenchfries require top quality potatoes. These potatoes are grownunder controlled conditions in the Netherlands (Zeeland andNorth-Brabant provinces), Belgium, Germany, France andthe United Kingdom. Water is an important resource inpotato processing: the company’s largest productionfacility in Kruiningen, the Netherlands. This productionfacility in Kruiningen, uses nearly 2 million cubic metresof water per year. The water is used for washing andblanching purposes, but is also used as feedwaterfor the deminwater production to feed boilers.Until the early 1990s the company processed its potatoesby using drinking water, but in 1992 it began the transitionto the use of sustainable industry water. The first stepwas to test whether DynaSand filtration could provide therequired quality. These tests were performed successfullyat Evides’ industrial water treatment plant “Kraaijenberg”and after the approval of the Dutch food authorities(“Keuringsdienst van Waren”) Evides built a full-scale installationconsisting of three DynaSand filters and a UV disinfectionunit. The water treatment plant was owned and operatedby Lamb Weston / Meijer. The total production capacitywas 100 cubic metres of industry water (processwater) perhour. The feedwater source was surface water which originsfrom the river Meuse and is being stored in the Biesboschwaterreservoirs of Evides. By means of a piping systemthis water was transported from the reservoirs toLamb Weston / Meijer.By 1996 water demand had increased from 0.8 to 1.5 millioncubic metres per year, which exceeded the capacity ofthe existing installation. Furthermore, Lamb Weston / Meijerhad decided to outsource its water operations in order to befocussed exclusively on its core business processes. Theirsupplier of choice was Evides, who had already shown tobe a reliable partner through years of uninterrupted supplyof drinking water. Evides acquired the industrial waterpurification installation from Lamb Weston / Meijer’s on aDBFO basis (Design, Build, Finance & Operate): in additionto design and construction Evides became the new ownerof the plant and also became responsible for the operationsto supply water that meets the specifications and quantitiesrequired by Lamb Weston / Meijer.

Extensive quality monitoring, including biologicalmonitoring, means that this raw water is excellentlysuited as a source of industry water for the food industry.Purification processThe first step of the water treatment plant in Kruiningen is toremove suspended and colloidal substances. This involvesthe use of a coagulant (in this case iron chloride) to facilitateflocculation. In this particular installation flocculation doesnot take place as a separate stage, but inside the sandfilter. This is called direct filtration. In order to reduce the need forbackwashing the plant uses dual-layer sandfilters, with alarge capacity to hold dirt. The dual-layer sandfilters are cleaned by backwashing withwater from the industry water reservoir and by means ofair scouring. Effluent from the filters is collected in a closedreservoir for sedimentation. After sedimentation the waterfrom the top layers is discontinuously pumped out andmixed with incoming feedwater.Iron chloride additions to raw waterIn order to facilitate coagulation (chemical flocculation), ironchloride (FeCl 3) is added to the water, which causes particulatesto clog together to a size that makes them easier tofilter out.Dual-layer filtrationRaw water is fed into the dual-layer filters through a centralchute. The two layers of the filter consists of a bottom layerof sand and a top layer of anthracite (coarser fraction). The relatively low density of the anthracite prevents it fromsinking into the sand as the water flows through the filter. In each dual-layer filter water is dispersed through perforatedpipes to remove pollutants such as sludge particles (clay),algae and calcium particles, that remain in the raw surfacewater as a result of the softening process in the Biesboschwater reservoir. The sludge flocs also gather up some ofthe bacteria, which is the first step in improving the water’sbacterial quality.Industry water reservoirsTreated industry water is stored in a reservoir, disinfectedwith ultraviolet light and finally pumped under high pressureto Lamb Weston / Meijer. The reservoir also serves as aback-up system to ensure a high reliability of the supply ofindustry water.High-pressure pumpsA pumping station consisting of three high-pressure pumpsperforms the task of pumping the purified industry water toLamb Weston / Meijer.UV disinfectionBacterial quality is improved by disinfecting the processwater with ultraviolet (UV) light, which damages the DNAstructure of the microorganisms. As a result the microorganismsbecome inactive and do not become pathogenic.UV disinfection is highly effective against a range ofmicroorganism. UV light does not require any dosage ofchemicals, which make this a sustainable technology.Backwashing and air scouringThe dual-layer filters are backwashed periodically with airand filtrated water from the industry water reservoir. Air forscouring the filters is blown from below.

Thereforethe effluent from the dual-layer filters, including theadded iron chloride, is pumped into the effluent reservoir. After six to eight hours of sedimentation the clarified topwater (down to 2.5 metres below the surface) is fed backinto the first step of the water treatment plant . The sludgeis removed from the effluent reservoir approximately onceevery year.ResultEvides constructed the water treatment plant at Kruiningenon the basis of DBFO principles (Design, Build, Finance &Operate).
