Process water and demineralisedwater for BASF Antwerp

05SOIntroductionSPFC50-FT1220IN50-PI1205BASF is the global leader in the chemical industry and, with a workforce of more than 109,000 employees, ispresent in all major industrial hotspots. The BASF so-calledVerbund site in Antwerp (Belgium) is the largest integratedchemical production centre in Belgium and BASF group’ssecond biggest production platform worldwide. In the most northerly part of the port-industrial complexof Antwerp, BASF has a 600-ha site where more than54 production plants account for the best integrated chemicalproduction site of Belgium. The total production capacityDN25VBASC50-PdT1234VBA8050-XV120250-HV122150-FL123050-V1200VBA8050-HV1222VBA8050-HV1223VBA80SG50-HV122450-HV1217SGSGSGDN25VBA50-PI122550-HV1220903.401-011REGENERATIONamounts to more than 15 million tonnes per annum.DN25VBADN25DN25VBAVBAWBASBADN25DN25VBA50-XV1206DN25VBAVBASC903.401-009CIRCULATION TO CATIONDespite continually striving to save water, BASF’s total waterconsumption has consistently been rising over the years asa result of its ongoing production expansion. Back in 2007BASF has embarked in a project to determine how to optimisetheir water portfolio. To that effect BASF submitted aglobal water tender to the market. The tender had a twofoldobjective: firstly the expansion of the production capacityof demineralised water and, secondly, an investigation intothe possibilities to optimise the current water management50-ZSC120250-ZSO1202by means of reduction of the site’s dependence on costlygroundwater. The tender left the choice with regard to theform of contract open: realisation by turnkey delivery of assetsor delivery of process and demineralised water on thebasis of a Design Build Finance Operate (DBFO) contract.1/2"1/2"50-ZSC120650-ZSO120650-ZSO120350-HV121850-XV120350-ZSC50-ZSO1203120550-HV121950-XV120550-ZSC1205903.401-013BYPASS MB 1/250-PdSH122650-HV1204The contract was awarded to Evides Industry water. Thepositive experiences of various customers in the southwestNetherlands played an important role in that decision. Notonly do Dow Chemical (Terneuzen), Shell/Air Liquide (Pernis)and Yara (Sluiskil) make use of demineralised water treatmentplants (DWTP) designed by Evides, they also rely onEvides’ expertise for their day-to-day operation. Besidesquality and experience, sustainability also played a significantrole. Close to BASF’s site in Antwerp Evides has riverwater available from its vast Biesbosch reservoirs – whichare fed by the river Meuse – as prime raw water sourceso as to replace groundwater. Finally, Evides’ design of allnew water facilities include a redundant piping system fortransportation of process water and the built-in redundancy903.401-027SUPPLY DEMIDN25VBA903.401-011SUPPLY MB 1in the process water and demineralised water treatmentplants, which contribute to the maximum reliability of supplydemanded by BASF.DN25VBA50-ZSO1216DN5050-XV121650-ZSC50-FL1270VBA1216DN25VBABL IXDN2550-FI1231VBADN2550-ATVBA50-FI50-FI1241 1251PH CON1230On the 1st of January, 2011, the entire BASF site in Antwerpswitched to intake of process water produced by Evides. Asof that date the intake of groundwater was all but stoppedand drinking water was limited to sanitary facilities only. This was enabled by the construction by Evides of a processwater treatment plant (PWTP) with a capacity of 2,000 m 3 /hon Dutch territory. The process water serves in large part asthe feed water of the whole BASF site, including their existingdemineralised water production plant. It also feeds newlyconstructed DWTP built by Evides on the BASF site, whichhas a continuous capacity of 440 m 3 /h (max. 550 m 3 /h) andadds to the existing demin capacity. Until 2026 Evides willbe securing the supply of process and demineralised wateron a DBFO contract.50-AT124050-ATSI021250-1OPEN TRENCHOUT* NOTE 1

In the DWTP, the water is first treated in acation exchanger after which it passes through a CO 2degasserand subsequently through an anion exchanger. Finally, polishing takes place in a mixed bed ion exchanger. Thedemineralisation water meets the requirements as specifiedin BASF’s call for tenders. The process water treatment plant is connected to EvidesWaterbedrijf’s raw water transport system and treats theriver water by means of double-layer sand filtration. To Evides this is proven technology since it has been inoperation at numerous plants in order to reduce the suspendedsolids of the raw water. This first treatment step isrobust as well as simple to operate. The PWTP’s capacityis 2,000 m 3 /h (including possibilities for expansion in thefuture) and consists of 10 units. The redundancy is ‘N-2’,which means that two backup units are continuouslyavailable. Two new 1,500-metre-long process water pipelines(ø 600 mm) have been assigned to transport the processwater from the PWTP location to the north of BASF’s site, where it is stored in a new buffer tank (volume: 10,000 m 3 ).This tank feeds BASF’s industrial water network, which distributesthe process water to BASF’s existing DWTP as wellas to the new DWTP of Evides. In a next phase of the project and on request of severalusers of demin water, BASF and Evides have decided toadd an additional treatment step in order to further reducethe Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content of the demin water.Low TOC is of importance to high-pressure steam productionunits. To that effect a part of the demin water of Evides’DWTP is post-treated with Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology.Throughout the construction stage of the project, Evides andBASF Antwerpen’s Engineering and Energy Policy departmentsas well as the Energy Company have intensivelycooperated. This resulted in financial savings that benefitedboth Evides as well as BASF.Quality demineralised waterNormal value After ROElectricalconductivity (at 25°C) < 0.1 mS/cmpH 7 (±0.5)TOC < 250 mg/l < 50 mg/lSodium (Na + )< 5 mg/lFerrous (Fe)< 10 mg/lSilica (SiO 2 )< 10 mg/lOxygen (O 2 )Saturated atambient temperatureand pressure
