The 37th AnnualHANS BERGERSymposium 2009Clinical Neurophysiology andOptions For Refractory EpilepsyCourse Description<strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Commonwealth</strong> <strong>University</strong> Medical Centerpresents a distinguished faculty from epilepsy centersand neurophysiology laboratories across the country inthe 37th Annual commemoration of Hans Berger’sbirthday. The goal of the symposium is to offerphysicians, technologists and medical professionalspractical information in applying state-of-the-artelectrodiagnostic testing in the clinical management ofpatients with epilepsy and related disorders.Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this symposium, the successfullearner should be able to:1. Provide appropriate bedside clinical evaluation of apatient during a seizure.2. Expl<strong>ai</strong>n the meaning of “refractory epilepsy” and itsimplications.3. Discuss av<strong>ai</strong>lable and forthcoming treatmentstrategies for refractory epilepsy, includingmedications, dietary modification, neurostimulation,and radiosurgery.4. Identify EEG patterns commonly associated withrefractory epilepsy and those associated withsuccessful surgical outcomes.5. Describe the risk factors, clinical presentations,diagnostic evaluations, treatments, and outcomes ofrefractory seizures in children and adults.6. Review the evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery.7. Understand the situations in which video-EEGmonitoring allows appropriate therapeutic planningand prediction of outcome for patients with refractoryseizures.8. Describe the impact of psychiatric comorbidities inpatients with refractory epilepsy.9. Review safety concerns and procedures for patientsin the epilepsy monitoring unit.
