The jerutings Osborne family from
Little Rock vollU1teered to cook a massive
barbecue before the Oct. 6 football
game for the entire Harding family.
While the team warmed up for their
big game against the University of
Central Arkansas, the Osborne family
was busy cooking a feast for students,
faculty and staff.
A line of hundreds stood outside
the tent in front of the Ganus Athletic
Center, waiting for a feast on a tray.
Each tray contained onewhole roasted
chicken, a turkey leg, a sliced barbecue
beef sandwich, a couple of barbecued
ribs and a buttered roll. Most people
only needed one tray to feed many of
their friends.
Senior cheerleader Candace Colon
said her friends split one tray among
four girls. "It is so much food ... .wecan
get three trays and split it among our
squad," she said. "We look forward to
the football game with the Osbomes
and their famous barbecue."
TNs was the third year the Osborne
family has put on this feast for Harding
free of charge.
"It is good to see an example of
someone who is sharing their wealth
with others/' sophomore April
Goodwin said.
The Osbomes also put on a fireworks
show after the football game
for all the Bison fans.
Many people walked away wearingOsbomefamily
memorabilia. The
family gave away everything from
baseball caps to ink pens to cotton Tshirts
to the people they served this
year.
"Walking away with a full stomach
and a free shirt is something that
puts hugesmilesoncollegestudents'
faces," sophomore Joe Chambers
said. "It doesn't take too much to
please a hungry college student, but
they go above and beyond."
The football players enjoyed having
the Osbornes tailgate at the game,
especially since their presence drew
attention from all over Arkansas toward
the Bison game. The numbers
at that game increased, and the news
coverage benefitted the atmosphere.

idnight Oil, a coffee shop in Searcy, provided a relaxing environment for students
o escape everyday pressures of college. Midnight Oil offered items such as cappuccino,
andwiches and smoothies.
Although Searcy had a limited
nightlife, Harding students came up
with creative ideas to fill their extra
hours:

for a group of students to take a road
trip that started in Benton, Ark. and
eventually ended in Choctaw, Ark.
The sole purpose of the trip was to
eat at the two Mi Ranchito Mexican
restaurants that are not located in
Searcy.
"We just have a seriously stro.Jlg
liking for the Mi Ranchito here in
Searcy, and we were pleasantly surprised
to hear of two other Mi
Ranchito locations in the great state
of Arkansas," Carrigan said. "So, we
couldn't resist taking the road trip of
a lifetime."
The group of 25 students picked a
Saturday in january to make this
adventure, which they called "Two
Ranchitos and a Tandy." They started
by eating lunch at the Mi Ranchito in
Benton. After lunch, they stopped at
the Tandy Ten in North Little Rock
to see a movie. For dinner, the carpool
made the drive to Choctaw,
Ark., to eat at the third Mi Ranchito.
"To be perfectly honest, there
couldn't be anything more enjoyable
than spending time with friends
and eating at two Ranchitos in the
same day," Chris Johnson said. liThe
Tandy movie in between the two
Ranchitos made for a good break to
let the food settle from lunch before
we visited the second Ranchito."
Many Harding students also traveled
to the Orpheum Theatre in
Memphis, Tenn., to watch operas
al!d famous musicals such as "Phantom
of the Opera" and "Les
Miserables." In january, around 350
students went to see the opera "The
Magic Flute," taking advantage of
the $7 tickets available through the
music department.
Students who didn't want to leave
Searcy found entertainment in many
events on and off campus. The Student
Association held movies, concerts
and different events throughout
the year. Searcy also offered a
number of attractions including
movie theaters, batting cages and a
dinner thea ter.

a university telemarketer. Students made calls all over the country at night in an effort
to raise money for Harding's scholarship funds.
Student telemarketing grew on
Harding's campus this year as
many students chose to work as a
telemarketer to help raise money
for Harding's scholarship fund.
"The students call at assigned
times, have a fri endly conversation
with the person and explain
the scholarship program and
goals," manager Leah Atkinson
said.
Students only called those who
have been associated with Harding
in some way.
"We only target those who sue
positively involved with Hardirlg,"
senior and co-manager La ura
Atkinson said.
There were 35 students who
called to raise scholarship funds
for Harding. Fifteen students called
several nights a week, from 5:30 to
9 p.m. The students raised hundreds
of dollars with this method.
"I enjoy working here because
you get to talk to alumni- whom
you've never met before, and have
a great conversation with them,"
sophomore Korey Keith said.
"Sometimes I might call some-
one at a bad time, and they don't
have the time to talk to me," Keith
said. "It's no big deal; we just thank
them for supporting Harding and
move on."
This program is young, but it
has been very successful, Laura
said. It has gained a lot of support
for Harding by using the students
to communicate with the possible
contributors.
"If contributors talk to the student
personally, then they have reassurance
as to where their money
is going," Laura said.
Along with the contributors, the
students felt good about this program.
There were only night shifts,
and the workdays were constant.
The students worked at a personal
desk in a room that was decorated
to give a telethon atmosphere.
This year, the Kresge Founda·
tion generously matched every dol·
lar raised to put toward the new
w ellness center. Through thiE
method, Christians from all over
the country had the opportunity tc
give back to Harding.

them. Leaving Harding can be a difficult
transition because of the
Christian environment students at
Harding become accustomed to.
Three seniors shared their hopes
and fears.

This.year's junior class officers were (from left to right) Presi dent Adam Kirkland, Vice
President Jordan Hix and SecretaryfTreasurer Brad Cunningham. Kirkland's goal was to
emphasize spiritual growth and fellowship within the junior dass. To accomplish this, the
class took part in many Student Association service projects on campus this year. The Rakeand-Run
and Rudolph to Romania projects were just two in which the class participated.
As a class the juniors tried to walk in the light as Jesus did by serving one another and
the community. "It's reassuring to know that there are leaders in the junior class who desire
for Harding to be closer to God," said SA President Steve Cloer.
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7

The odds for winning a prize from the "Seize the Prize" Contest
frpm Kellogg's Smart Start are very low, but for senior Daniel
Dubois's family, these odds were good enough. They won the grand
prize trip to Hawaii and a sport utility vehicle, and they won it in a
cereal box.
"There was a slip of paper on the inside of the box that said
'Congratulations .. you're our grand prize winner!'" Dubois said.
The trip was for two to Kona, Hawaii to see the Ironman triathlon.
"My parents had enough frequent flyer miles so my sister and I
could go," Dubois said.
The trip was seven days with all expenses paid. The Dubois
family also received VIP passes to the events surrounding the
triathlon. "We got to go see'the Ironman Triathlon and go to the
dinner before the race and to the awards ceremony afterwards,"
Dubois said.
They got to go see many other things as well. "We were completely
on our own. We did a bunch of stuff. I enjoyed the volcanoes
and the coffee farms," Dubois said. "We got to do things with the
VIP passes that no one else could do."
The Dubois' also won a 2002 Isuzu Axiom. While his mother was
the official winner, Dubois said his father will be driving the vehicle.
"It's an awesome car," Dubois said. "It came fully loaded from
the factory with leather .. a six-disc changer, a sunroof and fourwheel
drive."

Senior Jennifer Cameron sets up DormNet on a
student's computer. The DormNet staff worked many
hours to rid the campus of the Nimda virus, which
infected the campus in October.
If you lived on campus last fall, you numbered
among those affected by the Internet
outage caused by the Nimda virus.
Nimda was a new virus that spread through
e-mail messages like many viruses in the past,
but it also used network shares, web pages,
instant messaging and file infections.
The virus spread throughout the world in a
rna tter of hours.
Once it was on the Harding campus, it
brought the entire network to its knees quickly,
due to the network traffic it generated trying to
spread itself to other machines.
Fortunately, Nimda was not a destructive
virus.
"For several years now, Harding has depended
heavily on e-mail filters to protect the
campus from virus outbreaks," said John
Nunnally, director of network operations:
"Thankfully, this approach has allowed us to
avoid many of the virus attacks suffered by
others. This filtering will remain in place because,
in many instances, we are able to stop
new viruses even before they have been identified
by the virus protection software companies."
Nunnally also said the DormNet staff,
DormNet Assistants and the Information Technology
Academic Support staff worked 24-hour
days in order to get the network running again
for the students and faculty.
"Faced with the task of' disinfecting' nearly
3,000 campus computers, we decided to take an
aggressive approach to the problem," he said.
II And, because of the threat of future, more
destructive attacks, we decided to implement a
campus-wide virus protection plan. Hopefully,
this will protect all machines on campus in the
future."

President David Burks receives some pampering

Association during Appreciation Week. The SA
gave Burks the day off from reading chapel announcements.
Besides staff members, other groups that
were shown appreciation throughout the week
included Servicemaster, ResidentAssistants, faculty
anp Aramark staff members.
The SA coordinated the week's activities,
which ranged from a car wash for the faculty to a
pizza party for the reSident assistants. To give the
Aramark workers a day off, students worked the
cafeteria lines during lunch on Friday.
"Working in the cafeteria for a day gave me
such a better appreciation for the cafeteria workers,"
said sophomore Whitney Mills, who worked
in the Pan Geos wrap line on Friday. "As students
we take them for granted. We never really know
what it's like until we are in their shoes for a day."

Rule changes induding the admission of
women to men's dorm lobbies were put in
place this year by the Student Services Office,
reflecting the increased willingness of the administration
to accommodate legitimate student
requests.
"It's long overdue." said Roddy Mote, assistant
dean of students.
Begirming at noon and ending at 10:30
p.m., men and women could socialize inside
men's housing.
. For women to be allowed in men's lobbies,
the administration required the use of an alarm
system on the side doors in the men's dorms.
Because the installation of an alarm system on
side doors is a new development, student
opinion varied. Some students were thankful
for the change.
"I like the change because it's more convenient,"
sophomore Sara Gregerson said. "If

can now get a hold of them easier."
"The new lobby rules should definitely continue,"
junior resident assistant Bob Moloney
said. "It's nice to finally have the option of
having a girl in the lobby."
Some men, however, didn't think having
women in the dorms was worth the inconvenience.
"Having girls come to the lobby is no compensation
for the use of an alarm system,"
sophomore Sidney Green said.
"If having girls in the lobby is going to
cause tpealarmjunk, we don't want the girls,"
fresrunan Brad McCormick said.
While the changes brought mixed reactions
from students, Mote said they were made to
heighten responsibility for the students and to
make campus life more enjoyable.

about marriage while in college.
